The Bright Forever

Lee Martin's second novel, The Bright Forever , is a painful, agonizing tale of guilt and loss, a tragedy told with all the tortured wisdom of hindsight and plenty of psychological damage to go around.

I remember when there were so many people looking for her in So. Illinois. It was a scary time. I found an article in an binder full of obituaries at the Lawrenceville Public Library. It is in the genealogy area. Someone told me Gonder was angry with the Kavanaugh family because he was fired by Dottie's father or grandfather. Any truth to that story?

I grew up in an old two story house across from the hospital on state street, where the highway splits. growing up, the neighborhood kids used to tell me that the mansion style house that sits at the top of the hill (where the hwy and state street splits) was the home of the cavanaugh girl before her abduction and murder. I just want to know if this is indeed correct.

I was stalked by William Gonder before he abducted and killed Dotty Kay. I lived in her neighborhood. I called the police when he followed me home one day when I was walking home from my after school job.
I will never forget the horror of this man.

@Janice, I did not know that he stalked you, that is so scary, you were smart to call the police. He was aggressively searching for someone wasn't he. I had heard he was looking at homes with a local realtor which apparently was a way to see who was coming and going in our neighborhood. It is still something that is not far from my mind and I think about it very often (especially when my kids were little). So awful and scary and really did psychological damage to so many. He lay in wait in my home a few blocks from the Dottie's home one night. I came home from a little league game alone on my bicycle from the park while my family watched my brothers play. I knew something was wrong when my cat Simone would not come into the house. He was waiting downstairs by my bedroom in my dad's study. I was able to run out of the house and tell my neighbor who was a deputy officer. This was only a few days before Dottie disappeared. I helped search for her with the National Guard. He taunted me from the jail after he was arrested, as my friend lived in a home above a local business that was across the alley from the jail. I spent years afraid of him. Most people will never know the fear and anguish that I have lived with. I still think of Dottie and pray for her and the life she should have had.

I never knew what happened to him. Maybe at least I won't be afraid for myself and my children and grandchildren. I wish Dottie would have been spared such a terrible horrifying end.

Also-
Peggy Litherland. Anyone remember that story? She was murdered in St. Francisville. I couldn't find anything about either of these stories.
Yeah, I remember when they found her body. It was a big shock. I went to the same high school with Peggy. She graduated with my sister. She was a very nice girl, and it happened a few months after she graduated. It was a shock. Peggy was always such a sweet girl.

@Janice omg I had no idea the guy was in your house? Apparently he escaped before the police got there? I don't think even my parents knew that he had broke into your home. Or that he tried to contact you from jail. I am just shocked. I can not imagine. He was an evil, evil man. I heard he died in jail a long time ago, a heart attack, not good enough for that evil. I pray for Dottie too. I remember her little face.:( Gonder haunted many people.....

I was a friend of Dottie's. I will NEVER forget her or what happened to her. We were 9 I believe. She was abducted from in front of the Library and brutally murdered. My dad was in the search party when they found her and that's the first time ever I saw my daddy cry. I won't elaborate what was done to her but it was terrible. Maybe if I had been able to ride my bike with her that day, he wouldn't have grabbed her. I think of her all the time and still pray for her and her family.

Hi, I just gave this book to my niece to read - she is in the 8th grade, the same age I was when this horrific abduction and murder took place. I remember it all vividly. My husband'd uncle is one of the police officers who questioned Gonder and later, found the little girls body in the woods by Mt.Carmel. My friend, Lori, lived in Lawrenceville at the time and she was friends with the little girl. Decades later I met the author at a reading of this book. This is a creative nonfiction book...yes, the idea of it all came from this tragedy, that time we all remember, but the book is a mixture of some things close to the event - locations, songs, etc... but this is another story(similar) as made up by the author. This is a excellent book.

I remember when it happened as my oldest daughter was the same age of 8. That night the police were looking all over town with spotlights and the went through the alley behind our house and looked in a storage shed window there. I had not heard what had happened but knew something bad had happened. A close friend of mine's Mother lived next door to Wm Gonder in Olney, IL. They found her books in a burn barrel behind his house, the books she had been taking back to the library when she was kidnapped. There was a lot of different stories going around at the time, way too many to post, but where I worked at the time was located in City Hall and I am sure many of the stories I heard were correct as they came from credible sources. So sad!
