Sheriff removes TASERS from department following traffic stop

By Ashley Smith
Staff Writer

BRIDGEPORT - Lawrence County deputies are without their TASERs this week following an incident Friday evening that began as a routine traffic stop.

At 8:41 p.m. Friday, Dennis Thacker, 61, Sumner, was pulled over by Bridgeport police officer Dave Dooley for speeding. According to Sheriff Russell Adams, Thacker did not have immediate proof of insurance.

Shortly after Thacker was pulled over, sheriff's deputy Hal Pargin arrived at the scene. Adams said he was not called for backup, but "just happened to come up on it."

Thacker then exited his vehicle, where two children and his wife remained.

"He was going to be ticketed for speeding and no insurance," Adams said. "But he eventually found the insurance and was trying to show the officer."

According to Lawrence County State's Attorney Lisa Wade, words were exchanged between Thacker and the two officers.

"The officers tried to place Thacker under arrest and he did not comply," Adams said. "He was told to place his hands behind his back and refused."

Pargin then discharged one TASER cartridge but missed Thacker.

"When you fire a TASER, it has two separate components that must stick in order to work," Adams said. "And only one of them stuck."

AHH I SEE

I once took the privilege to tell Gestapo Pargin he should have stayed as a counter person at Ace Hardware. A Wal-Mart door greater would be a good position for a washed up gestapo like him too.!!!!!

I bet that went over well. I used to think the county was full of upstanding officers but now thinking they are all corrupt. I hate how they all scratch each others back and think it is acceptable to take advantage of people. I must be delusional, but I used to think officers, hell public figures in general were suppose to be good citizens whom you rewarded by given them your business and who lead fairly decent lives as to set a good example, but what do I know.
