STEVENSON, Ala.(WAAY)- When Jackson County Sheriff's Deputies captured 38 year old Johnny Payne on Friday, it was the end of a long and difficult pursuit that dated back almost a week.

The story began on June 24th, when Bridgeport Police say they spotted Payne in a ditch near railroad tracks, in the middle of an apparent break-in. Despite having several items used to cut through fences, and being dressed in a ski mask, police were unable to arrest Payne at the scene, and turned the case over the Jackson County Sheriff's investigators. The investigators soon obtained a warrant for Payne on Possession of Controlled Substances, Receiving Stolen Property 1st degree, Possession of Burglary Tools, and Criminal Mischief 1st degree.

On June 26th, a deputy spotted Payne on an ATV on County Road 75 in Bridgeport and attempted to stop him. Payne was able to shake the pursuing officer and disappear. The ATV was found later that day, repainted.

Two days later, Bridgeport Police went after Payne at a home on County Road 255. As they arrived, two vehicles fled the scene. Payne was driving an SUV that soon wrecked, forcing him to flee on foot. The second vehicle was driven by his son, Jonathan Payne who was arrested and charged with Fleeing and Attempting to Elude.

A few hours after escaping from the Bridgeport dragnet, Payne was spotted driving another vehicle by Jackson County deputies. Again, he fled the officers, wrecked his car and ran off in the Aldhouse Street area of Bridgeport. Two acquaintances of Payne's were arrested and charged at the scene with Attemping to Flee.

Later that night, Alabama State Troopers caught sight of Payne in another SUV being driven by a woman named Hollie Hale. The car failed to stop at a State Trooper checkpoint on County Road 98 near Russell Cave, sparking another high speed chase - the third involving Payne that day. The pursuit went to the Tennessee state line, where the SUV stopped and Payne again successfully fled on foot.

On Friday, Stevenson Police along with Jackson County Deputies surrounded Payne's parent's home on 2nd Street in Stevenson. The officers spotted Payne on the porch of the house, and saw him flee inside. Deputies and officers swarmed the house, and arrested four members of Payne's family who were inside. They've been charged with Hindering Prosecution. Officers finally found Johnny Payne hiding in an air conditioning duct in the attic.

Payne is facing the original charges from the Bridgeport railroad break-in. Several additional charges will be pressed as police reports are finalized.
