What the heck's going on at Dan's Papers in The Hamptons?

There's a new publisher in town? From Las Vegas we heard.
And what happened to Kathy Rae? Is she still around or did she get the axe? Anyone know? I see the paper's been thin, thin, thin since it was sold a year ago.
We heard that the Hampton Style magazine is gone along with Vox.
What's going on in our Hamptons?
Anyone know?

Here we go. Starting and spreading rumors of the demise of others is a time-honored winter pastime among the locals of the Hamptons. It's their version of singing Christmas carols and cross-country skiing. Don't believe everything you hear--and better yet, try to refrain from "innocently" posing questions. Is life so boring in Minneapolis that you are posting about some newspaper on eastern Long Island? Wait...that was a rhetorical question.

Working for the Strib and having a summer home in the Hamptons (a very, very small home), I am always interested in the publishing business. I have a special *love* for Dan's Papers and hope to see it flourish in these disastrous times for the newspaper industry. Knowing Vox is gone I'm hoping the paper can pick up more advertisers and continue to be as good as it's been for the 7 years that I've vacationed at my home.
Happy Holidays.

I, too, agree with you about Dan's papers.
I've been reading Dan's for 13 years and hope it's around for many more years to come. I have had the privilege of placing ads with Kathy for years and hope to see her again for our ads. She's got my business! Oh, and by the way Radar (nice picture, like you need gas money!), hope to see you and Lorene around the holidays!

Dan's Paper is a joke and if you haven't figured that out by now I don't know if you ever will... Dan sold out the "locals" 20 years ago when he decided to publish the "Maps of The Backroads." None of his musings have held any weight with me and I have lived here for almost my entire life.

Cool your Jets, my NY friend. I know the new publisher at Dan's Papers and the guy has managed to build the business wherever he has gone. Kathy Rae is most definitely still there and I understand she & the new publisher are working together very well. As far as thin, thin, thin papers - where have you been the past year dude, it's tough all over and the Hamptons are no exception. What's going on in our Hamptons? Why don't you ask the new publisher? I believe you'll find him to be open, honest and more importantly, someone you should know...

Sounds to me like you might be the joke. Don't you get it? Dan's Papers doesn't report the community ne2ws per se. They tell you in a very satirical, toungue-in-cheek and sometimes hilarious way how the facts might or might not affect you. Every other publication in the Hamptons tells me the same old thing, and there's nothing wrong with being an observer of the local news. But Dan's give me something I can't get anywhere else in print or online about the community in which I live. Dan's makes me laugh, it makes me think, it makes my day. Just wish they published more than once per week.

What do you expect, Dan's Papers is owned by a right wing publishing company, Brown Publishing of Alliance Ohio.
Since they bought Dan's they have axed over 1/2 of the year round staff, and most recently cut the paper to every other week unti late March and then again starting
in late Fall. Hampton Style is history (at least for this year).

Further there are a number of advertisers who have pulled out since they do not want to support Brown Publishing in any way.

Most recently they closed the Southampton Office, moving the classified staff back into the fire-trap that is their Bridgehampton office.

Not good.

Wow! You sound like a disgruntled employee or a friend of one. I guess there are a lot of them going around these days. When I read your post, Uber Surfer, I decided to call Dan's to see what's up. There is no plan to go every other week in the Fall as you suggest.

You are correct about their publishing every other week thru March. However, this was more a function of the economic downturn we are all caught up in right now.

And your other comment about advertisers not wanting to support Brown Publishing Company is really off the wall. Brown's has no influence on the content and does not work with or expect anything from the local editorial staff. In Fact Dan himself still writes the major articles and in the same fashion he has always written them. Where did I hear that? Why don't you call Dan...

Finally, my research also indicated that Hampton Stle Magazine is no more, as you say. But what does that have to do with Dan's papers anyway. Tough decisions in tough times for sure.

You are also correct about moving the classified staff back to their Bridgehampton office which is where they started in the first place. They did so because they did not need all the space in Southampton which was primarily for Hampton Style.
The comment about Bridgehampton being a firetrap is also a another give away. Again, you sound like just another disgruntled employee. Maybe one of millions across the U.S. who have lost their jobs in tough times. I know, I was one.

WOW, back at cha, Back Seat Driver !!

My why are so defensive about a dying company ??

In your smug reply to my post you forgot one important category, that being disgruntled advertisers, there are many of us, and are we are mad !

I, like many people will not advertise in ANY publication owned by Brown Publishing Company.

If you think that ANY decision can be made by
the staff in Bridgehampton, think again.

..........and just from being a advertiser, I know that building in Bridgehampton is a dive.

Hey Uber, why so unhappy?

I've been advertising with Dan's for the past three years and my business is still growing even in these terrible economic times.

I've tried the Independent, the SH Press, even Newsday and none of them come close to matching the business Dan's has generated for me.

There's also a new Publisher there too. I met him a couple weeks ago at a Southampton Chamber event and he seems very open and willing to work with customers. In fact he seemed very genuine. I know his name is Bob but can't remember his last name. Guess I should look inside the paper for it.

I guess my last comment is what difference if you feel the place in Bridgehampton is a dive or if you don't like Brown Publishing for some reason. I mean, who cares. I'm trying to grow my business right now and Dan's works for me. Sorry to hear about your woes, but just like politics, there are candidates you like and those you don't. To each his own, I say.

DansFan,

I knew by the way Uber was posting that he/she was probably an X-employee. I guess you can't blame him for being bitter, however, buring bridges is certainly not the best way to move forward. Lots of folks have lost their jobs in this economy and many times it was for the general good of the remaining employees. Just look around the Hamptons. Many closed businesses due in part to the way they ran their business.(although if you are one of the unlucky ones, you probably have a different point of view.

I also don't understand why he is bashing Dan's owner, Brown Publishing? I can tell you that business owners I know,(and I know plenty), have no issues with Brown and also know how well read Dan's is on the east end.
