My heart goes out to James' friends and family. Hopefully this cowardly murderer gets life for shooting an unarmed man.

I went to school with James. Although I haven't seen him in a long time, he was always a really cool guy. Worst part about it is his little girl not having a father anymore. Can't believe a cop would try to pass off a verbal fight as the right to shoot and kill someone. What a lowlife POS! I also can't believe he's on leave with pay! If anyone else would have shot James, they'd be in Jail right now! Because this guys a black cop he gets special treatment I suppose...

Anybody remember all the rallies, riots, and demonstrations that went on in Oakland recently when a white cop shot a black man? I guess it'd be wrong if white people did it! Which is why you don't see this story on the big news stations like Fox and CNN... that's just reserved for the other races.

Just like all of the other cops who have killed unarmed citizens, this one will get off too. Past cases have shown that police can/will get away with killing unarmed men. If all of the rest of them get off then he should too! But of course, bc the black cop killed a white man he probably will be the first to be charged with murder and be made an example of. Smh...

@ws6wes... How many times do you think that an unarmed white man has been killed by a black cop? Trust me, if there was another case like this FOX would be all over it and we would have a "James's law"today! How you feel right now is how minorities have for some time now. Some have been killed or beaten before they could've thought, let alone speak the word coon!

question? was whitehead under enditment prior to shooting. was information avaible to police officers of whiteheads membership with any organization (s). that would identify whitehead as a threat to any citizens? note comments made to enterprise news paper are being altered or earsed after posting. file a lot of complains! we are give the right of free speech. we are praying for those that lost a loved one, & the citizens of Orange.

I agree with Lee73 that minorities have been treated the same as Whitehead for a very long time. That doesn't make it right. I don't believe Lee73 was trying justify the situation, either.
The fact is that it is 2010, more than fifty years since LBJ's civil rights laws and we are still having problems. This is not the wild west and it is not okay to tote a gun especially if you have any intention of using it the next time someone "pops off" to you. What makes the situation worse is that the guy is a police officer.
Where is the press on this? It has now become the Orange Leaders, as well as other local newspapers, responsibility to ensure that this is going to be publicized elsewhere. The press is the fourth estate, the government watchdog. Where are you guys? This is your town, are you guys going to tolerate a gun-toting off duty police officer who felt it was okay to "throw-down" on any person who offends them?
All racial aspects aside... The man was an officer of the law. He has been trained not to allow racial bigots determine how he would act. There are other types of non-lethal force that he could have used. Does the City of Orange lack quality judgement in both choosing who is on their police force?
Please for the sake of our future take some initiative and hold the City of Orange police force accountable.

the Orange press always has routiney ignored news as directed by the OPD. I have witnessed several events in Orange in many years that were swept under the rug. the blue wall will block anything incriminating. Also, you can bet they won't touch this one with a ten foot pole because the race card will be the first one played.
