The talk around Orange is about the incompetence of the area fire departments in their failure to properly fight the fire at the business structures on Highway 62. Everyone is exasperated at the dismal efforts of the management of the fire departments, but not the volunteers or fire fighters who did the yeoman’s work of fighting the fire. Uniformly under poor leadership and mass confusion of "Who's in charge?"
No one has recorded that the first arriving fire department spent fifteen minutes in the parking lot first in conflict over who was qualified to man a nozzle, then another ten teaching and helping each other put on air packs.
Orange Fire Marshal Joe Mires said he has been fighting fires for twenty years. He has “nine bugles on his collar“. Tooting his nine bugles didn't do him much good. His sphincter should require stitches because that's about the only thing he blew out! I’ve since been told numerous times that’s his forte. He and his bugles should be marketing a resume!
It’s evident a scrutiny is more than one sided when law enforcement officers and others who witnessed the incident tell you the story spontaneously. Subsequently to have some self amplified fire Marshall attribute it on “Fighting it safely” or “Fire Code Restrictions would have helped” is about as pretentious as his declaration he is competent at his job.

I remember this fire, even though it has been two years. It was not in our jurisdiction, we had responded to assist Bridge City. I was assigned to Public Information which is to say dealing with the Press, effected business owners and looky-lous. In the middle of all that was going on, I do remember some yo-yo criticizing me because my rank insignia on my shirt and the one on my helmet didn’t match. As I was in PR mode, I explained that I had recently been promoted and what each meant. We talked for a few minutes. I am in the habit of trying to take advantage of a teaching moment to promote fire safety, so I may have thrown in a few relevant fire safety and prevention tips and observations. Then I went on to some other group. I wonder what this guy’s problem was?
