Family Dentistry is far too sales-oriented.
I was in Sales in my younger years, so I know when I'm being "pitched." That being said, my visit to Family Dentistry was very disappointing. I've now spoken to others who seem to share a similar experience. Let me explain.
My appointment for a dental cleaning was followed by an examination with the dentist. From the moment you see the dental hygienist, however, I noticed a subtle "sales-oriented" approach that becomes more and more pronounced as things proceed. In short, the dental hygienist spent significantly more time measuring the plaque on my teeth than cleaning it. This seemed a bit unusual since I've had many dental cleanings over the last 40+ years (and these always require periodic pauses where I rinse my mouth with the adjacent self-filling water cup). Again, at Family Dentistry, the dental hygienist spent more time measuring than cleaning. She also told me several times that I was a "good candidate" for periodontal maintenance.
Unfortunately, Family Dentistry seems far too motivated in "selling" you additional dental services. They will even tell you "..we're very big on periodontal maintenance here." This procedure, however, requires another visit for a periodontal cleaning (which is not fully covered by insurance)-- but I would not have been opposed to having an extra periodontal cleaning had the initial cleaning been more than mediocre and cursory. I went to Family Dental for a dental cleaning. Not a "pre-sell" for other services.
After my 30 minute "cleaning," I was also seen by the dentist who reinforced the need for periodontal maintenance. But it seems that most people are referred for this service. I now know several other people who have periodontal maintenance done at Family Dentistry (which apparently requires the application of antibiotics into the gums). In addition, Family Dental has also been known to recommend a crown rather than a filling -- but sometimes a less costly filling will do quite nicely when a crown is recommended. In short, crowns are considerably more expensive. Although insurance usually covers only 50% of the cost, you won't know this until after the crown procedure is completed and insurance is billed.
When I ultimately voiced my concerns, I was actually told that Family Dentistry was now owned by a corporation, and the corporate office had recently mandated that all dental cleanings should be reduced to 30 minutes. I was surprised by this. I've never had a cleaning that was less than 45 minutes to an hour (or longer). A thorough cleaning will take that long. All in all, my teeth were not properly cleaned and after talking with others who go to Family Dentistry, many have commented that they also didn't feel that same "just-cleaned" feeling that they've experienced after previous visits with other dentists.
Bottom line, Family Dentistry has an enormous financial overhead. They have high rent offices located in highly visible shopping center frontages. They also conduct a lot of expensive advertising and have a very large staff of employees. These things cost money. A lot of money. Unfortunately, a large overhead also means they need to obtain significant patient revenue before they break-even.
That being said, a subtle sales-oriented approach does exist at Family Dentistry. You will even notice that they may try to sell you a "special" $10.00 bottle of mouthwash when you leave. After all, Family Dentistry has to break-even before they can make a profit.

Beware of Family Dental !!!

At best, Family Dental misdiagnosed me. At worst, they lied to me. This is outrageous for anyone in the medical profession. I wish someone would investigate them. Family Dental is basically a giant dental mill that works on volume. They seem to try and sell patients on crowns (instead of a standard filling) or they try to sell you on more costly periodontal maintenance every three months (instead of a basic cleaning twice a year). In my case, they said I needed both. Family Dental said I needed a crown and periodontal maintenance.

I questioned this so I decided to see another dentist and get another opinion, but I didn't tell the new dentist everything that Family Dental had recommended. The second opinion dentist and dental hygienist then gave me a phenomenal cleaning. Probably the best cleaning I've ever received. The dental hygienist actually spent 1 1/2 hours cleaning my teeth. They told me this was standard procedure for any new first time patient. In contrast, the dental hygienist at Family Dental spent approximately 20 minutes measuring the plaque on my teeth, but she didn't really clean it. She scraped my teeth a bit, but she was mostly taking measurements of my plaque and simply writing the figures down. I couldn't believe it.

Let me also say that I really take care of my teeth. I diligently brush and floss thoroughly. So when Family Dental said I needed periodontal maintenance and a crown, my gut feeling was that something was very wrong at Family Dental.

As mentioned, my second opinion dentist ended up being very thorough, and he told me that I definitely didn't need periodontal maintenance. The older filling that Family Dental wanted to replace with a crown was also fully intact. In other words, I did not need a crown. I then told the second opinion dentist what Family Dental had told me, and the second opinion dentist said he was not surprised. He took another look and confirmed that the filling was fine. He then went on to say that he'd treated other patients from Family Dental that came in with problems caused by Family Dental. This seems corroborated by other negative reviews on this page.

In short, Family Dental seems very big on expensive crowns when a standard filling is all you need. According to what I've heard (and see on this page), Family Dental doesn't always do very good work. In my case, the second opinion dentist confirmed what my original dentist told me (before I ever went to Family Dental). My retired dentist said my fillings were intact. He told me my gums and teeth were healthy. "Keep up the good work," he'd always say about my flossing.

So stay away from Family Dental, but if you have to use Family Dental, question what they tell you. If they want to put in a crown, get a second opinion. And if they want to put you on a quarterly periodontal maintenance schedule (every three months, which is more expensive than regular dental cleanings) question this too. Did you ever need periodontal maintenance before? Why would you suddenly need this at Family Dental?

Who wants unnecessary dental work?

Once again, Family Dental said I needed an $800.00 crown when my filling was still intact. They also told me I needed periodontal maintenance when my gums and teeth were healthy. Yes, I'm angry, because I almost believed Family Dental. I almost didn't get a second opinion, but thank God I did.

So, beware of Family Dental.

BEWARE---KEEP AWAY FOR YOUR TEETH'S SAKE

THEY HAVE DRILLED MANY TEETH THAT THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE - THEY TOOK OUT A WISDOM TOOTH HALF WAY THEN I HAD TO DRIVE TO ANOTHER DENTIST TO FINISH AS THEY COULD NOT DO IT - THEY WANTED TO PUT CROWNS ON EVERY TOOTH JUST TO GET PAID AND I LET THEM DO A FEW, NOT AWARE THEY SHOULD HAVE NEVER TOUCHED THEM!!! THEY PUT A CROWN IN ONE TOOTH. RIGHT AFTER DOING IT, I SAID THE FLOSS GETS STUCK AND IT DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT, BUT I KEPT GOING BACK COMPLAINING AND THEY SAID IT WAS FINE --- I FELT PAIN IN THAT TOOTH AND WENT SOMEWHERE ELSE ONLY TO FIND IT WAS DONE SO POORLY IT CAUSED A CAVITY AND NOW NEEDS ROOT CANAL -- I CALLED THE OFFICE TO COMPLAIN AND WAS TOLD Dr. GELBART WOULD CALL ME BACK AND TO DATE (JUNE 8, 2009) I AM STILL WAITING--I WAS TOLD BY EVERY PERSON THAT ANSWERS THE PHONE, AND I CALL EVERYDAY-THAT THEY GAVE HIM THE MESSAGE BUT HE HAS NEVER CALLED ME BACK-HE KNOWS HE IS GUILTY BUT WON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILTY FOR THE DISASTER HE CAUSED--I sent faxes no answers, called no answer! wake up gelbart and take responsibility for your ways and your workers also.

Inappropriate care.

Getting my teeth cleaned seemed like a rush job since more patients were waiting, and the assistant who did my filling wasn't licensed as she should be... malpractice at it's best. When questioned about it, she just said she didn't need one. It's a state of the art sweat shop, if anything.

I found out the hard way. My 'little' filling wasn't done right, and I ended up needing a root canal. I will never go back there again.

All of the negative reviews for Family Dental on "Insider Pages" (another website) were removed, although some of those negative reviews for Family Dental are here at Topix.com .

In fact, the only reviews left at "Insider Pages" (for Family Dental) are from people who apparently work at "Insider Pages" (e.g., Maria G.). You can do a web search to corroborate this.

Does Family Dental advertise with "Insider Pages"?

The whole idea of being able to write a negative review is to warn fellow Putnam and Dutchess County residents. You can't keep the good reviews and remove the negative ones. It's misleading. It's even unethical.

So be careful if you're going to Family Dental, and get a second opinion before getting any work done there.

"Insider Pages" (another web site) had many negative reviews of Family Dental. Apparently Family Dental advertises with "Insider Pages" since all negative reviews have been removed.

The only reviews left on "Insider Pages" (for Family Dental) have been writen by "Insider Pages" employees. I checked this out based on another review above. The review is correct.

So don't trust the reviews on "Insider Pages". They remove the negative reviews for those who advertise with them. "Insider Pages" employees then write up false reviews to promote customers who advertise with them.

I also agree about "Family Dental". Not the best dental practice. Always pushing crowns and periodontal services that you don't really need.

I'm really furious with this dentist. I've been complaining about sensitive teeth for almost six months now. They initially told me I needed a few older fillings redrilled. My friend finally convinced me to go to another dentist. Ive now been referred to a root canal specialist. Why didn't Family Dental pick up on this? Are they that incompetent? They drilled my teeth and now I need root canal. I read Gena H review above and it sounds like they did to her what they did to me. Family Dental made a big mistake, but they are very smooth. They put you at ease. Ands you don't know how bad they are until they screw up. Be careful people of this dental practice. I am furious.

Family dental is one of the most dishonest dental practices I've ever encountered. Listen to what other reviewers have said here. These dentists will drill for cavities and root canals whether you really need them or not. I'm not saying that they'll blatantly drill a tooth where nothing is wrong. I can't be sure about that, but they'll drill for anything that gives them an excuse to drill. A false error shadow on your x-ray will give them this reason.

These dentists will also charge you extra for periodiontal maintenance when they should be giving you a standard cleaning instead.

These are money hungry dentists. And when you're money hungry, you tend to provide dental work that may or may not be needed.

I am surprised to read this reviews, I have been a patient of Family Dental Group for as long as they been open and by far it has been the best place I have been, they have a ansewring service that will page the dr if you are in trouble after hours but in a few occasions I had to see other dentist as an emergency and I can say by far no one has gave me the care and attention that the doctors and staff at family dental as giving me.
I trust them I consider myself to be a person that will not spend money if I dont think is absolutly necesary so when the said to me I need it some work I did question it but I had the right answer if I dont believe something I go to the internet and google it and plenty of times I found the same answer that they gave me. I understand now what periodontal disease you can floss and brush all you can but you can still walk around with it if your hygienist does not mesure your gums you do not know if you have pockets on your gums, google it you'll be surprise

It pained me to have to check off even one star for this place. I am so upset that I didn't check the reviews before going here. The place its self is disgusting and dirty. The dentist who I saw told me I needed total oral reconstruction (without even taking any x-rays or anything). After I denied him starting the "process of oral reconstruction" he told me we could try a temporary fix for my nightime teeth grinding. After I was done with the two second fitting and piece of crap "contraption" he told me it was going to cost $600. I literally laughed in his face and told him "nice joke". After going back and forth with him he asked me what I wanted to pay for it, said it costs only $30 to make. Then he told me he'd charge me $200 and if I didn't like it I could return it. Return a used mouth piece - sure. I told them I refused to pay, did not want my insurance to pay anything and refused to leave with the piece. I had the receptionist write it down and make me a copy and immediately wrote to my insurance company. This Dentist literally ran out of the office when I tried to confront him. This place is a mess and I cannot wait for this guy to go out of business. He is the most despicable person I have ever encounter and he is a total money hungry worthless jerk. How he remains to be in business is beside me. Do not go here. Do NOT go here.

Wow, this place is dishonest...All of my negative comments have already been expressed by others...see above. Except for "Sandra" who is obviously delusional, and well lets face it not very smart. That woman who cannot even write proper English probably couldn't even understand the injustice that was going on during her "emergency after hours" visits with the dentist. Please Sandra if you are going to post on the internet then learn the conjugations of the English language it both discredits and minimizes your efforts. I hear that there are other offices, maybe I shall try a different one...

Family Dental had told me that one of my older fillings needed to be refilled. I trusted them and let them redrill my tooth. For six months afterwards, I complained that my tooth was bothering me. Discomfort. Sensitive. Never felt quite right. I went back twice to Family Dental for cleanings and each time, they said my tooth was fine.
But after six months, my filling fell out!!!
My husband then convinced me to go to another dentist. That dentist did a thorough check-up and told me my tooth was cracked. That's why the filling fell out. It also explained the discomfort I had been complaining to Family Dental about. The dentist then referred me to a root canal specialist, but the root canal specialist told me that my tooth had to be pulled and referred me to a dental surgeon.
In other words, three separate dentists told me that my tooth was cracked while Family Dental said my tooth was fine. I was shocked! Family Dental had cracked my tooth and then refilled my tooth!!! Family Dental simply hid their mistake by putting in a filling to cover the cracked tooth.
I would NEVER go back to Family Dental, and I would NEVER recommend them to anyone.

Tip of the iceberg: Bad Dentists

Not the best dentists

I have read many negative reviews about Family Dental after going there. Too bad I did not read them first. Before going there. Family Dental tried to sell me all kinds of procedures that I did not need. I have now had this confirmed by other dentists. The dental cleaning was not a cleaning at all. It was the worst cleaning I ever had. It took 20 minutes at best. It was more of a pre-sale evaluation.

I also heard that Family Dental used to be a decent practice, but they were sold within the last year or two. They are now corporate owned. So, some reviewers who have liked Family Dental may be very displeased with the new corporate owned Family Dental.

Not only this, I also read some reviews that said a few negative reviews is nothing in the scheme of things (over 20 years), but most unhappy patients do not write reviews. They simply do not go back.

So, negative complaints are just the tip of the iceberg. The negative reviews on this dental practice represent that statistical proportion of the overall population that are not happy with Family Dental.

In other words, there are far more negative reviews on Family Dental than positive reviews, and I agree with almost all of them. So, get a second opinion. Do not trust this corporate owned dental practice.

It apparently is NOT the same dental practice that you used to know.
