Crime rate was never a problem. I attended Oconaluftee Job Corps in 2006 just before they shut down. They run a tight ship there. The students are not allowed to roam around town by themselves.

I dont think people really understand what Job Corps is there for.

The job corps program was set up to help young pople who have a hard time in life and are given a second chance to restructer their lives and to help them get a trade and an education to better help them in life. I was a dorm supervisor there for 16 years on the graveyard shift and as Dani said the students were not aloud to go into town without supervision. It is a great program which I am proud to have worked with and for.

I attended this program in 92-93. It was one of the best things that ever happened to me. I am now registered with the DBPR in Florida and have owned my own company for many years. This program is hard (understatement). It provides a great service to the public, citizens and community.

That is VERY lame. This kids and young adults need a hand up not a hand out. They can do anything, but to people like you all you see in negativity. I rally feel sorry for you. I don't see the cup half full you must be a half empty person. I will pray for you.I hope you never need a hand up, and if you did would you have enough since or pride in life to take it, I doubt it. Join us in the real world. I had 2 children go to Job corp and it helped them a great deal and they had a good education. Thank you.

I dont know what you guys are talking about, I also went to OJCC right before the closing in 2006. I beleive that jobcorp needs to be more "knowing" about who they decide to let in their school. Most of the kids there were nothing but a bunch of punk wanna be "gangsters" And half the teachers are perverts... Even I slept with a few of them.. I mean get real! That school had some SERIOUS issues! I was in 4 fights, drugs and alcohol were ALWAYS available, and everyone was having sex! Thats the cold hard truth.. ask any of the students what the "cage" beside the gym was for! LOL

When did this "wonderful" time start??I was an "inmate" at this job corp, site in '92.I wanted to take auto mechanics, and was told by the recruiter, that they offered this trade at Oconaluftee. The closest we "ever" got to auto mechanics was washing "staff" cars. The GED program was a joke!!Everyone went AWOL,to Cherokee,"without" staff. For most of the "inmates" job corp was the last step before juvi,or prison.Too many troubled individuals, and not enough structure,or supervision,is what I remember.

in defense to job corp they ran an extra tite ship... lol we all were walking on egg shells form the staff to the sercurity we were well protected and assured that nothing would happen to us. the "crime" rate was not even that serious. some things got broken/stolen/and what have you but hey we and i say we; were troubled youth. i did seven months there and never got in any trouble and i acted as a student member of the board.
job corps is what you make out of it. u get what u put in.and if some of the parents teach the kids better before they get there these things wouldn't happen it's not a baby sitter service.

and to comment on "lacey". yeah u r rite alot of the kids were doing stuff that they had no buisness doing and you why would you be screwing your teachers. u need to be a little more prideful about yourself. OJCC accpeted kids with hiv/hpv/aids/std's and everything else if you wanted to screw you were doing it at your own risk...lol they did it in trade/ on the track/ and behind and between dorms/ the "cage" was suppose to be a supply room until it was used for nasty stuff. and since were in the subject of disgusting crap you walked around with no panties on and jumping in and out of windows from dorm to dorm. no folks you tell me if that is the example that you want for your kids ...NO i suppose but this is tru things that happen. not with EVERY kid but with most of the kids. job corp is not a prison so if you want that kinda of restriction go TO JAIL and leave good things for good people...

yeah lacey was a whore. if she was going to walk around with no panties whilst wearing an out dated and out of style short tennis skirt, atleast she could have shaved...or better yet, cleaned her self properly. uughh, sorry tricks like that aaalways have something bad to say about everything.

I am at OJCC now and its pretty cool. At the moment we only have 2 dorms open so its small and very structured/discipline. We HAD drugs on campus in the past but as soon as they found out about em, everyone that was involved was gone and same with the Alcohol. Of COURSE there is sex on campus because its 68 teens and young adults living likw 30 feet away from each other. But for the most part the center is civil, we dont have many problems, and MOST of the people here actually WANT to be here and get something out of it. Its kind of a Love/Hate thing with Job Corps.

I went there in 96-97 and my experience was great, I went there with a purpose and did what I had to do without getting involved with all of the things that kept me from getting what I needed in NC so if you go there with the same mentality then what do you expect I went with high expectations and got out of there with what I came for. It was strict but like every where people make a way to do things they wanna do, but with people there with STDs who would wanna risk that. I met a lot of friends and would love to come back in contact with them so if you were there in 96-97 please email me nikitasneed@yahoo.com.
