Dear Ellie,
Greetings from Kenya.
My Name is Lucy Ndungu ,the Director for Hope for Teenage Mothers and I have come read about your great work from the website .
Our organisation is for charity empowering the teenage mothers from Mukuru slums in Kenya .
Why I am writting this email is to ask you if you know of any people who could assist to empower these needy teenage girls as young as 12 years who have dropped out of school due to teenage pregnacy. We have a group of 150 them that we have managed to take back to school through non -formal education, vacational training and small business skills training.
About 35 of them are graduating from the tailoring /knitting and dress making class the end of this year. The challenge is to get them machines to continue with the courses they have learnt so that we do not go back to seat in the slum.We want to get them a place that they can be doing small tailoring /knitting and dress making so that they can get a livelihood for themselves and their children. We want them to be a good example to the others so that they can give them hope.
The other group that is in non-formal education with about 50 girls is also challeged as it shares the classroom with the a normal primary school class pupils.Sometimes the classes are not available and thus leaves these young mums with no learning for that day.
These Young mothers palys the role of motherhood and as students. The girls fall out of school as they go to look for food to feed themselves and their children. We wish to intoduce a feeding programme to attract them to school funds being available.
The other challenge is that some these teenage mums are attending school with their small babies as they have no one to leave their children with and they cannot afford to pay for a house help.We would like to build them a day care centre where they can leave their children as they study.
If we could empower these teenage mothers ,we would reduce poverty within the slums .That is why Hope for teenage mothers is looking for people of goodwill to help make a
difference in the lives of these teenage mums. Please if you know any one who can help us.direct them to us.
Please feel free to visit our website and see more about us www.hopeforteenagemothers.org
God Bless you.
