It's about time! The worst by far are these hard core cyclists who think the traffic laws don't apply to them. I watch these morons blow 3 and 4 way stop signs all the time. Too dumb to live, if you ask me.

They also ride two or more abreast instead of following the law and staying in the bike lane or on the shoulder. People, please don't move out of the lane for them anymore, either. It isn't safe. You're endangering motorists - in the future maybe get up to the center line but don't cross it just because these mental midgets are on the right. Give em a close shave and maybe they will get a clue.

Nice anon, give them a close shave. If you are too close or they move left you injure or kill them. These are people with families that chose to exercise by cycling and your fat Internet ass threatens them bodily harm? Your such a loser. Get a life.

Bicylists are considered vehicles and you are requied to share the road with them. I hope you brush one and they sue your fat ass, and take your house And computer so we don't have to read your stupid crap. I agree with Jim these are people with families, how dare you threaten them bodily injury. I agree they need to share the road and not ride two abreast if not safe, but you are wrong anon

I think we can all agree anon is a douchebag, but bicyclists do need to understand that sharing isn't the same thing as blocking the road. I do my best to give cyclist room on the road, I just wish they would return the favor and not ride across the middle of the lane.

Yah, Bill and as such they are required to follow the provisions of the California Vehicle Code as do regular vehicles. However, they do not, and they do so in a way that creates a hazardous condition and resulting personal danger. It isn't smart, it is however, their choice. Be a law-breaking dumbass and increase the risk of being involved in a collision, or follow the rule and lower the risk.

It is NEVER legal to ride two abreast, regardless of whether or not it is "safe", which is a totally subjective determination. Clearly if an accident occurs, then it wasn't "safe".

That's why the rule is the way it is.

If they move left that would be an unsafe turning movement and therefore their fault. Really these brain matter challenged bikers just need to read the CVC and follow the rules. They have this annoying sense of entitlement to be law breaking road hogs, and I'm just here to say you don't have to stand for it. Don't put yourself in danger by crossing the median to give them more room - they need to be on the right, where they belong, and where the CVC says they need to be.

Cvc does not say they need to be to the right, there is a section on impeding. They can lane share and ride two abreast if it does not impede. That is how motorcyclist can split lanes, nothing in the cvc stops lane sharing

You're confused Jim, the CVC indeed does state that a bicyclist must ride as close to the right hand edge as practical. That means riding two abreast is explicitly prohibited because if you doing that, then you are not riding as close to the edge as you could. You're intentionally NOT complying with the law.

21202.(a) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway at a speed less than the normal speed of traffic moving in the same direction at that time shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway except under any of the following situations:
(1) When overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction.
(2) When preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway.
(3) When reasonably necessary to avoid conditions (including, but not limited to, fixed or moving objects, vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals, surface hazards, or substandard width lanes) that make it unsafe to continue along the right-hand curb or edge, subject to the provisions of Section 21656. For purposes of this section, a “substandard width lane” is a lane that is too narrow for a bicycle and a vehicle to travel safely side by side within the lane.
(4) When approaching a place where a right turn is authorized.
(b) Any person operating a bicycle upon a roadway of a highway, which highway carries traffic in one direction only and has two or more marked traffic lanes, may ride as near the left-hand curb or edge of that roadway as practicable.

BTW, there are no explicit provisions against "lane sharing" by motorcyclists, but other provisions regulating turning movements and signalling and overtaking make it virtually impossible to split lanes legally. There is certainly no way to split lanes safely, which nearly always means its illegal, somewhere and somehow.

Anon you make me laugh. You are always on point. These other people are morons. Yes we have to share the road with them, that is why they need to follow the law. Some people are clueless.

We could balance the State budget off of the Lance wannabes in Livermore. Glad to see that LPD is going to enforce existing CVC laws. Personally, I'd rather ride my mountain bike, but when on the street, I do obey the laws.

I ride, and I am all for more people riding bikes, whether its to commute with or just to get out and exercise and have a good time. I mostly trail ride, not so much street, but I can say I'd never be able to enjoy myself riding two abreast - because I know how stupid and foolhardy it is, and I've seen too many accidents.

It really is the Lance wannabes who present the most problems, unfortunately - these are people who should really know better. I'll give you an example - the riding club from the Lab, which calls themselves "The Cyclotrons" (get it, its so clever!). These are smart people- brilliant even, and yet they ride with wanton disregard for both their personal safety and for the law, not to mention just the simple consideration of others on the road. Why?

Well, its a culture/collective attitude of entitlement.

What I'd like to see someday is the entire group all pulled over and all getting tickets for not riding single file and for being road boulders creating obstructions of traffic flow.

Now if only the cops would pay attention and monitor this large, impossible to miss group:

they'll be the platoon of Lance wanabes every weekday around noon departing the lab headed through North Livermore. They'll be riding double, even triple, don't stop for Stop signs, don't signal, and don't stay to the right.

Yeah good tax dollars at work, citing cyclists. How about solving crimes and dealing with motorists on their cell phones slamming into the rear of people because they are speeding and not paying attention. Not some bicyclist who could not hurt someone other then himself.

Hey, I've agreed that cops should be focusing on quality of life issues, not BS tickets for things that don't hurt anyone. But annoying bicyclists creating road hazards is a quality of life issue. Someday there is gonna be a head on collision because some cyclist with shit for brains is going to be riding two abreast, or swerve into the middle of the lane, and the poor sap in a car who is just acting reflexively is going to cross the center line and get killed.

You know the other day I saw one in the median on Vasco road? On the overpass?! WTF? Future organ donor!

He's probably not an organ donor..........

My husband HATES cyclists, hates - yep, if they are in the road (you know how a big group of them will occassionaly literally take up the road, hindering cars from passing), he will honk or yell at them. It's hilarious, only thing that really sets him off.

Well your husband sounds like a pretty reasonable guy - that seems like a normal reaction. Well, normal in that a lot of people are too meek to stand up these road hogs. Good for him.
