Who knows the history on the "slaughterhouse" on Empire Mine Rd? Highly doubt it was a slaughterhouse. Heard it was a grain mill where they fed the cows before being sent off to the slaughterhouse. Anyone know when it was set up and when operation ceased?

It actually was a slaughter house up until the 60s, I spoke to Roddy about it some years back. After the 60's it was converted into a ranch and held some 5k steers, the slaughtering took place offsite at a mill in Stockton. I can still remember seeing a boat load of cows all over this hills during this era. Now you can barely find a handful of cows (mostly heifers). The whole gravity hill thing is just an illusion, if you put a 12ft level down you'll see there's some tilt going west to east.

The grain mill fed the cows the slaughterhouse was next door to it.Yes they did slaughter cows. That place been there in the late 1800's when Antioch became a town. When they stop in the mid 1970's.I was a kid my older brothers would tell me about that place I felt sorry for the cows.Kids in Antioch would go up there and party tell ghost storys. But there is Indian burial grounds up there. You don't mess with that.Go on maps of Antioch and you will see the grainmill and slaughterhouse.Empireroad ,if your thinking about going out there don't there some crazy people that are in a cult that hang out there at night,if you do go have a shotgun with you.

Honestly its just a road, nothing mysterious about it. I wish something existed there that was mystical (honestly I do). But in all honesty its just an area that housed cattle ready for slaughter. The west end of the area is the East Bay Regional Parks District which has lots of mines throughout the whole area. The road itself (empire mine rd) is accessible via walking, bicycle or via dirt bike only. There are lots of maps online with some neat areas to hike to in that region that have lots of cool things hiding about.

I always want to go and find the mines and caves and tunnels but they're so far back in those hills and I get tired of walking lol. Are there any old railroad tunnels anywhere in this area?

Really? Funny because I go there all the time without problem, like I said. No one is making any attempt to restore it or hang on to it, the road is closed, so why bother?

I ride my horse out there all the time,on the otherside of the slaughterhouse there is still cattle ranch on DeerValley Road across from the hospital, the cow graze there.I grew up in Antioch in the late 60's a friend of my dad work out of the slaughterhouse. Then they closed.Kids around at that time had stories about that place.I remember a old rancher out there let a concert promoter have concerts out there,it was call Red Barn we would go out there on Saturday night,it didn't last maybe a year.Kids would get into fights. But one thing the road is close for safety reason.Local rancher still keeps people out of there at night. They need too bull doze it.The Park District bought the land from Roddy Ranch so,pretty soon they will clean it up.
