Did anyone here eat at the Waffle House over on 27 next to Texaco this past weekend? My mother and I ate there, and succumbed to food poisoning. She seems to have it worse than I do. I did a search on the Health Dept.'s website and they did not have it listed as having been inspected lately.

If you did eat there this past weekend, did you get food poisoning as well?

Maybe one of you caught a stomach bug and since you both live together it spread. Tell Wob I hope she feels better soon.

Did you both eat the same thing at WH? Sorry you are sick, we may not get along but I do not wish sickness on anyone.

I had a patty melt, Patrick had a breakfast with sausage. We both had meat. I'm thinking the meat isn't being kept at the right temp or cross contamination between something in the cooler.

It wasn't anything we had at home -- no one else got sick. The only thing we ate different was at Waffle House.

I've looked at the DoH website, and apparently that one hasn't been inspected recently. I'll be calling tomorrow.

I had to go to the doctor today and get 2 liters of IV fluids in order to feel even half-human again.

Jew baby, what did you eat at Wendy's? It might be there's a common supplier.

I put a call in to Carroll County Health Dept. yesterday. The lady I talked to said it was not good that we both got sick when we had two separate things. I told her we highly suspect it to be the meat. It's possible too that they weren't wearing any gloves (I didn't notice, but they're supposed to, both Health Dept. regs and Waffle House rules) when handling the food. Mom said she noticed it was really filthy back there, like it hadn't been cleaned up in a while. Hopefully we'll see very soon.

There have been some stomach bugs in the area. Just because one person in the house didn't get it, it doesn't mean you didn't just have a virus. In my family, that happens all the time. It's a shame you are immediately persecuting a restaurant. And let's face it, Waffle House isn't the cleanest place to eat in the world - it's kind of your own fault for venturing in there. For someone who won't step in Bilbo's, I'm surprised you stepped in Waffle House.

And even if it was the food, seriously, you're going all out to call the Health Department? Just don't eat there again. My family has gotten sick after eating somewhere and we suspected bad food, but we didn't go on a witch hunt. If there's a large outbreak in the area, then sure. But just two people complaining?

Your lovely waitress who handed you your check could have had a stomach bug. The person who sat in the seat before you could have sneezed on their hands and touched everything. The whole house doesn't have to be sick for it to be a virus.

I'm sorry you were so sick - I really am. And I'm sure it was bad if you had to have IV fluids, but you don't always have to feel like you have to go after someone. Just let it go and eat elsewhere if you suspect food poisoning.

No, I don't work at Waffle House. I don't know anyone who does. I just don't like witch hunts...

I do agree it was probably a stomach bug caught from any number of places. A bad one is going around right now.
How many times do we get sick suddenly because we caught a bug and the last thing you ate is what comes back up and then from there on? You cannot always blame the food you last ate. Sure, sometimes food poisoning happens but you cannot assume that is what it is because you both ate at the same place and hubby didn't get sick.
My hubby can catch a virus and I never get it and visa versa.
Yes, if only two people are complaining and there is no reports of anyone else getting sick from eating at WH I would say a virus.

Who said witch hunt? The Health Dept is overworked and understaffed, this Waffle House hasn't been inspected in a while, and it's odd that the only thing in common with the people who got sick is they both ate at the same place.

Reporting occurrences like that to the Health Dept is how problems get recognized and corrected at restaurants.

Both of us have been in contact with LOTS of other people, and NOT A ONE has had any non-specific gastroenteritis like we had. The only thing in common is eating at Waffle House.

There was a third person with us who only had coffee, nothing to eat, and he did NOT get sick. He and I had sausage biscuits and tea earlier in the week at the same place, and did NOT get sick.

And just how do you people think outbreaks of foodborne illness are discovered and dealt with if people don't tell the Health Dept they think they got sick from eating at a certain place?

FTR, I love Waffle House. I love their patty melt, I love hash browns with chili and cheese, I love the waffles. I've eaten at many a Waffle House, and never ever gotten sick before.

It's called "Good Lord, I got so sick, I'd hate for anyone else to get that sick. I should tell someone so any problems can be dealt with."

At least that's my motivation. I find it interesting you all seem to think my motivation was "Oh goody, let's see if I can close down Waffle House."

Just how mean-spirited ARE you people?

Been no mention of anyone else getting sick from Waffle House.to the health dept or around town.
Kinda unusual to automatically point the finger at a restaurant right away without thinking about other possibilities too.
Heck Wobbler, you are one sickly person anyway, not surprising your offspring would be too.

To address several other things brought up:

1. The onset of our symptoms, the progression, and resolution are textbook cases of food intoxication -- where a toxin from a microorganism present in food makes you ill, not the microorganism itself.

In my first career I was a food and water microbiologist. I know this stuff like the back of my hand.

2. 2 people becoming violently ill at almost the same time (literally within a hour of each other) while the third person never gets ill and the other family member never gets ill, not even 4 days later, points to foodborne illness.

3. Becoming ill from food at a given restaurant does NOT mean the restaurant itself is at fault -- it's a starting point. The suppliers of the suspect foods and the sources of said foods are considered.

4. Being inspected by the Health Dept does NOT mean a restaurant will be shut down or that someone has a grudge against the restaurant -- all restaurants are supposed to be inspected. It's how the safety of food handling and YOUR safety are maintained.

5. You can't get an "increase in SSD" because it's based strictly on what you earned over your working lifetime. That was probably the most ignorant statement I've ever heard. And why would I doctor shop? I have the best one in the state IMO.

Think about this: let's say neither of us said anything, and decided it was a stomach bug. People keep getting sick when they eat at Waffle House. No one ever says anything.

Then your sweet white-haired old granny eats a double bacon cheeseburger there, gets horribly ill, has explosive vomiting and diarrhea for 2 days, dehydrates, and dies (a very likely scenario -- foodborne illness hits the very young and the elderly much harder than it does other ages). On tracing her
last meals, they discover that tainted meat from Iowa was served at that Waffle House over the last month, and that about 15 people before her were ill as well.

Wouldn't it have been nice if just ONE of those 15 had called up the Health Dept when THEY got sick, and before your granny died from the same illness?

Irony -- most people don't report what is probably foodborne illness because they don't recognize it for what it is. I'm not surprised there've been no other reports.

If I'd found a recent inspection report for that Waffle House it would be different. There's not one, so they haven't been inspected in a while (you do know it's a surprise thing, not by appointment).

Again, it's not a witch hunt against Waffle House. It's a concern for public safety. Of course, no one will believe that, either.

Because you all seem to think I'm as small-minded and mean-spirited as you are.

Once again, I can say with relief that I'm NOT a Haralson Co. native, if those are the values people here hold dear...

Okay, so let's go with it being food poisoning and they need an inspection. Do you realize that by posting "Hey, I'm calling the Health Dept", all element of surprise is gone? They can now clean up their mess, get a great inspection, post it on the wall, and go back to mishandling the meat. And no one would ever see a bad inspection report.

The smart thing to have done, and if I felt the need to file a complaint to the health department, would be to do it quietly so they would have got caught.
At this point, you'll be lucky to know for sure.

By the way, back when the swine flu hit, one of my children caught it and my husband caught it. The rest of the kids were fine and I didn't get it even though I was the one treating the fevers, cleaning up the vomit, and snuggling my child for comfort. If anything, I should have caught it. And we all had the flu shot (which didn't even cover that strain of the flu). And we all lived in the same house and touched the same doorknobs.

Germs are weird. Immune systems are weird.

The most likely place to pick up a virus is what everyone else touches, ( door knobs, telephones, merchandise at stores that other people have handled and put back on the shelf) all businesses should have the hand wipe dispensers at the door this time of year, a lot of people out and a lot of people traveling, It's no fun with the runs from both ends so protect yourself s this time of year.

The absolutely easiest thing is for everyone to wash their hands every time they come out of the bathroom, too, but have you ever watched how many people actually do?

When I was at Georgia State doing micro, we did a project where we swabbed the handles of the bathroom doors, water fountain handles, and classroom doors. Nasty, nasty people walking around out there.

Let's just say E. coli is THE indicator organism for fecal contamination, and we found E. coli in places you'd never expect fecal contamination to exist...

So yeah, wash your hands often and keep a bottle of Purell in the car or truck and use it every time you leave someplace where there are other people. You might know your own bathroom habits, but you don't know anyone else's for sure!

(BTW, I got 2 liters (2 bags) of fluids at the doctor yesterday and feel a LOT better, but I'm still weak as a kitten. Went to the store just now and had to leave halfway through to wait in the truck til hubby finished up. BRAT diet, pushing fluids. Lost 16 lbs in a month, 8 this past week -- had pneumonia a month ago. Not a weight loss regimen I recommend.)
