An innocent man was shot and killed in town early this morning...his only crime being taking a friend home as the friend was too drunk too drive.Due to mistaken identity because of an earlier call about a burglary and this young man having a similar vehicle he was gunned down in a residential area of Breckenridge...bullets flying everywhere..have we gone back to old west here or what? This young man has never been in trouble..no police record...and two small boys that now have to be without their Father..this was extremely excessive force and I pray these officers involved will be charged with murder and not just a slap on the wrist as what usually happens here in our fine town,as the police department covers up it's tracks pretty well..enough is enough!!!

The entire Breckenridge Police Department is corrupt and everyone in this town knows it. They do a terrible job and are always covering up there trail. This man was traveling very slowly, people had time to go outside tell him to stop..call the cops, cops got there and KILLED HIM!! WTF!!! The cops show up while he is still puttering down the street warn him one time to stop then ravishly unload 15+ rounds, why? Because the police were honestly threatened by a guy driving 10 miles an hr? BS!!! Somebody please investigate this and get rid of these idiots

I agree 100%"dont matter" and I hope "THIS" time something will be done about this senseless tragedy and yes our PD is useless when it comes to calling them if needed especially at night...IF they actually show up it is way after whatever has happened...and WHY did they not just pull in front of him and stop him?????...Oh that's right that would have meant common sense of which some of our "wet behind the ears" officers are incapable of!!!!I hope there is enough media attention and intervention that it can't be lied about or swept under rug as this man nor his family deserved something like this!!

what in the world would ever be right about shooting a young man and ending his life? just because you wear a badge and carry a gun, you can do what you want to and get away with it! this young man has small children who are now left without a father because of some dumb senseless act by a cop. this same thing happened in amarillo,tx. to my a friend of mine and i hope the breckenridge sheriffs dept. gets whats coming to them just like amarillo sheriffs dept. is getting. they say he rammed into a house...nonsense i saw the house and it was not ran into. boo to you breck. police dept. hope you can live with what you have done.

Just for clarification our city police and sheriffs offices are two separate entities this was done by Breckenridge City police officers...in fact there was a situation a few years back when someone had stolen a vehicle from another town and fired at our sheriffs dept and yet our sheriffs dept did EVERYTHING they possibly could before ANY shots were fired to stop and apprehend these men and then only when it was safe to do so without any citizens around...these CITY police opened fire on this innocent man like it was Gunfight at the OK corral...kinda makes us living in town want to move out into county where we won't get shot by city cops huh?..of course moving to a different town seems very appealing right now and I have lived here most of my life.Just did not want our Sheriff's dept or our local troopers to get another bad rap due to our incompetent City Police Dept.

The Breckenridge Police Dept. has been out of control for quit some time now. I have live her my entire life 36 years and I have seen alot of cops come and go and it has never been this bad until the past couple of years. My daughter was stopped on a routine traffic stop by this same officer pulled out of the car and handcuffed at the age of 16 beat her face up against the cops car after me and my son arrived and told us to get back or he would pepper spray us searched the car and let her go no ticket issued. I reported this to the so called chief of police my daughter had bruises on her face and nothing was done about it. Now this sorry SOB has taken a good man's life from him and his family and his patrol car is still parked in front of his home. What are we as citizens going to do? We have got to get the word out to someone that can help.My prayers go out to this family. Mike and I have been friend since grade school and this is terrible. He never met a stranger and he was just a great person to be around. Lets speak out.

Good Lord!!!...taking a young girl and treating her as a common criminal and nothing is done??? Murdering a good man??How many more folks have been threatened, beat up or will be killed before something is done???????We all HAVE to do something...maybe someone needs to come in and fire them all from the top down and start over with qualified officers or better yet, just add a few more deputies and get rid of the city cops all together???..I remember many years ago we had a state trooper here that thought he was all that and a bowl of cherries...after a few lawsuits against him they moved him way away from here..I know there are many more stories out there and I too hope more people speak out and I so hope these Texas Rangers don't listen to the BS that the Police Dept is trying to feed them as anyone that knew Michael would know he would not do ANYTHING like what they are trying to tell the news stations that he did!!!!!!!!!!

I find it hilarious that people make comments on a situation that they know nothing about. Where you there? Did you see what happened? No.
One of your comments was that Breckenridge officers had received a call in reference to a burglary in progress and that the suspect vehicle matched that of Mr. Richardson. Who made up that one? Wow! That took imagination! That is so far from the truth it's laughable.
The Breckenridge Police Dept has not had an officer involved shooting since the late 70's, possibly the early 80's. The incident that one of you referred to involved the Stephens County Sheriff's Officer, not the Breckenridge Pd. On that day in question-they did what they had to do to keep innocent lives safe from harm.
Funny how people constantly criticize the Breckenridge Police Dept and the decisions they make, but when one of you has a problem or feel that you have been wronged in some way-the police dept is the first place you call for help. WTF? When they don't do to suit you-they are all of the sudden corrupt and on the take.
I knew the man that was killed. I went to school with him and knew him to be a kind person. We may never know what he was thinking or what could have been wrong on this particular night. I will tell you that the officers at the Breckenridge Police Department that were involved in this shooting will never be the same. They will live with the thought that maybe the situation could have been handled another way, but knowing that in the end they had no other choice. They saved lives that night, maybe even someone you know.

i talked to mike richardsons grandfather about 30 mlns ago and all i can say is that i hope the texas ranger do a full investigation. the man had just driven a friend home and decided to spend the night instead of driving. he was parked the wrong way on the street and thought that he should re-park his truck legally. he drove around the block, the police showed and started shooting. he ran through the fence out of control proably because he was already shot. he was shot behind his right ear, through the passenger side window. there was a witness the man he was going to spend the night with stood in his yard and seen it all.someone was in the wrong. i bet the texas rangers will find out. but i was also told that this policeman was still working, he should not be. he needs to be on leave until he is cleared of any wrongdoing. and also from what i understand the burglary was the night before.im sure the police were patoling that area heavy since the night before there was also a big party busted with drugs and liquor with minors involved the night before. i am all for good law enforcement and we have some decent policemen in breckenridge.so why dont we wait and see what the texas rangers come up with before we condemn a whole department. these men work hard for their very low pay.

Okay so you're saying that they saved lives that night? WHOSE? Did he have hostages? Was someone else in the vehicle with him? You're saying firing 15 shots was necessary to save lives? I heard he did'nt even have a weapon. An earlier comment said he ran into a house? more like ran into a fence. They showed the man fixing his fence on the news last night. I'm just glad they have several witnesses who saw the whole thing! Maybe this time something will be done to our not so great police department who I know are not around to "protect" the citizens of this town. And yes I know this! As to this day no one bothered to even come to my house when I had an intruder trying to break into my home a couple of months ago. I called 911 and about 15 minutes later they did call me back to get more information. Thanks alot! There are no words to describe how the police dept treated my family a few years ago when a family member of mine was found hanging in his girlfriends shed. There were so many questions left unanswered and I'm sure it will stay that way. He may not have meant anything to them (which was shown in their behavior) but we loved him very much and all we wanted was for them to do their job and maybe return our calls!I pray something good will come out of this so I don't have to move my family. I'm starting to think this is not where I need to raise my kids.

My son moved here to live with me this year in Breckenridge , days after he was pulled over by Breck. P.D., gun pulled cocked and loaded handcuffed put in the back of the squad car . Told his car was on the list of stolen vehicles , after an extensive search and finding nothing the officer gets back in his cruiser and talks to the dispacher and says wrong one then he lets my son go and said it was the same licsens plate # but a Florida plate ? Yes , I went to the chief and yes he was trying to avoid me but , I found him out in the parkin lot icing down his beer . And we talked about it and they stuck to the story that , yes , we made a mistake and we are sorry . This was an obvious cover up for some misguided info and a cop that is rumored to be lookin for the drugs for himself .

You guys are right, only about one thing. Only when all of the facts come out and this incident is investigated fully, will everyone know the entire story. Until then, misinformed people should keep quiet.

We have had some good police officers that have worked here..key word being "have worked"...the turnover rate of officers ia amazing here..the good ones don't stay long...makes you wonder why huh??..maybe those ex officers need to be interviewed??...my sister was stopped a couple months ago coming from out of town to visit...doing nothing wrong with a baby in the vehicle...and the officer that stopped her said "this is MY TOWN and nobody messes with MY Town"...she asked what she did and he said nothing he just saw she was driving a sports car and did not want anything started in "HIS TOWN"...Give me a break!!!!!!!And everything they are lying about Michael did not happen that way...ask the witnesses..and no this is not speculation this is fact!!

well evidently u did NOT know MIKE because he would of never done that UNLESS OF COURSE YOU ARE ONE OF OUR SO CALLED COPS!!!!! or maybe a friend because HE accidently hit the fence and NOT THE HOUSE Well. the problem is that our city officials bring in these inexperienced rookies to pretty much train themselves and not have any experienced officers give them the father figure advice and training that would otherwise be done if not for the poor judgement in hiring (DAs)money talks and BS walks for experienced officers THAT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING and pulling out a gun should b the last thing that needs to happen not well he not listening so I'll just shoot him.

This is a horrible tragedy. A good man shot down due to incompetent officer's. To me there is no understanding of why 15+ rounds was shot at a man that was not a threat and had not possed a threat to the officers or bystanders. This man had a great heart and was done very wrong by these officers. They need to be punished to the fullest (cops or not), this is unacceptable. I just hope and pray that these Tx. Rangers get the whole true story and make good judgement calls with this case. I hope the truth shows through and not tried to be covered up and make these officers out to be "doing their job". This is not what their job is, killing innocent people and living their loved ones like this. How can you tell your kids that their father was shot down by the people that are suppose to be the "good guys". My name is Joni Kellar and for the cops that did this, All I have to ask you is, How can you tell me that you were in the right at all by firing off 15+ rounds at my cousin? Makes no sense to me at all.

I just wanna say me and my famalies hearts go out to the Richardson family, Mike was an excellent father and Awesome guy and did not diserve any of this, neither did his two boys this could have been done differently if u ask me. He would have never done anyhting they say he done, he's not that kinda of person these so called cops need to get ahold of their selfs if u ask me. This really needs to be looked at. our hearts will be with the Richardson family, Mike will be missed

YEAP!!! YOUR RIGHT/NEVER.BRECKENRIGE UNSOLVED CRIMES.

So what kind of person are you? How dare you act like you know so much. How would you feel if you just lost a son, father, cousin, uncle, brother? Have a little consideration for those of his family that are fighting right now for the justice of Michael. The police didnt save a life that night, no thats what a hero does, they are definetly not hero's. They killed him in cold blood. Doesnt matter how you look at it.
