No doubt it gives them an advantage. Certainly many people will be swayed. Not good for a town that relies on tourism for its economy. Guess park city will have to de-criminalize as well...impossible probably... not good

Just reading this article makes me want to go to Brekenridge and check it out...

Even more swaying is these comments about the police! Way to go Utah, and mostly rest of summit county, you are successfully destroying the only good thing you have in your shitty state. Soon this police-state reputation will spread even more, no one will want to come there, and you will have succesfully run off those liberal sinner bastards (who probably have coke on them). Oh yeah unfortunately, poverty will be rampant in summit as you have driven off all the tourism and all the money. Nice job self-destructing. Good job ruining the only unique place and the only tourist destination in your whole state.

I just cant understand the magnitude of idiot that promotes these type of things to go on in a town that depends on tourism.

As a person who used to like park city, these comments really anger me but what can I do exept hope that someone in a position of power in the state is reading these comments and decides to WAY tone down the police presence to make the town seem welcoming again.

Not to pile it on here, but aside from some of the more sensationalist comments, I haven't found a single inaccurate statement about the police in Summit County.
I've read and heard plenty from both police chiefs about how all they care about is public safety, preventing fatalities, keeping the peace - all garbage.
These idiots getting raging mega-boners when they pull over ski bums hoping to god they find a roach or some rich cougar driving her enormous SUV home hoping to smell alcohol on her breath.
I have absolutely, positively no respect whatsoever for the law enforcement here, and it's not just about the third-reich style enforcement. They're completely impotent when you really need them, my apartment was broken into, was I helped? No, took them 6 hours to swing by for a 5 minute look-see and a statement then never heard from them again. Did it matter I knew the thieves had their hands all over my doorknobs and counter tops when I asked them to check for prints? Nope. My girlfriend's prudish best friend was molested outside of the Spur by 2 tourist punks, when she called the police they practically told her she was asking for it. And I was harassed at the Bravery concert in Jan without a cup, or the smell of weed on me.
And of course I loved the front page pic from last month after the robbery at US Bank. Our storm troopers must have eaten their tough-guy tacos before grabbing the assault rifles and pretending to know how to catch a bank robber. These pigs can all rot in hell for all I care.
My advice to locals - fight everything. Question every pullover, politely tell them you're documenting everything they say, take pictures of them searching your car, take every ticket they give you to court and make those pigs sit on the bench and defend themselves. Most importantly, never give them excuses. I've learned speed limits almost everywhere in town and always use my signals, so if they pull you over for doing 60mph in one of the 45 mph zones on 224, it's your own damn fault.
In all fairness, I've been stopped twice by state troopers, and neither case was a bad experience - could just be me though.
I'm going to go hit the canyons and blaze one up on the gondola. Middle fingers in the air for PC law enforcement.
I moved out of Park City just because of this. I lived, skied & snowboarded there for 40 years. A new family neighbor from New York though I caused damage to there home, called the cops, I got busted cause they smelled incense. I got off but the lawyer cost alot. I was out of there. It miss boarding down to the town lift, but I don't miss the police state, their all on anti-depression meds anyway. Great comments here. The cops should read this stuff but their probably to busy busting the old locals.

All comments regarding PC law enforcement aside, having come back and read this article again, what a dumb story to start with. And the headline? The local newspaper suggesting pot needs to be legal to compete? Really? Destination skiers, a large majority whom are families, are going to consider legality of pot a criteria for choosing where to take their ski vacation? I highly (no pun intended) doubt it. Most I imagine won't even be aware of the laws here vs. Breck or anywhere else. I doubt Breck will publicise this in their tourism ads. Yes, a minority of skiers/riders who choose to imbibe might choose Breck because they feel it's pretty cool. And come to think of it, if it WAS advertised as a "plus", it would likely drive more destination visitors (families) our way. But overall, I see no impact, and don't see it causing any challenges to Park City "competing."

Completely stupid basis for a story.

I totally agree. But it seems this article has brought the REAL ISSUE to the front. The abusive nature of Law Enforcement on Locals and Visitors. Everyone needs to take a look at who the candidates are, that are running against Dave Edmonds. There are some candidates out there that realize what is going on, and are looking to bring some humanity back into our beloved society. If we do not continue to speak up, we will never be heard.

Whats wrong pc mom were you offended by the truth? Did you find something that wasnt capatalized? Good for you. You are really a genius. you are so clever! 3rd grade? omg that is so funny!

Typical right wing fashion cant think of anything intelligent to say so you have to resort to pothetic personal attacks.

If you like the rest of summit county so much why dont you go live there???? Then you can live where you belong, in a total shit-hole, with others like you, with your 10 inbred retarded birth defected kids, who will probably all turn into repressed psycopaths. Taking 6 pills of prozac per day until you die, husband a dirty crystal meth addict, daughters all getting molested, knocked up at 16, high school dropouts, who like yourself, actually think they are intelligent people. You want to talk about real stupidity... Ggetting harrassed by the police all the time because your scared-of-everything and cant stop voting for more law-enforcement. Thinking you are sooo much better than everyone else when in reality you are the most messed up of all.

And then you will wake up one day and wonder why you are dirt poor, and noone wants to come to Utah and what happened to Park city, and why you cant even go outside without being monitored and harrassed by cops, but you are too stupid and and numb from you anti depressants, to realize that it is your own fault

I think it is you who is not thinking through to the end of things, it is people like you with their close minded, stubborn victorian and completely nonsensical ways, that are ruining everything

Noone respects your opinion, and you are obviously too stupid to make any type of logical argument, so why dont you just STFU, you brainless c-word

Dude are you on crack? You are obvioulsly pretty clueless! Do you not realize that pretty much all snowboarders, alot of skiiers, most seasonal workers, and even the parents of these "families" you talk about, all smoke? And you dont think it will have any effect? Especially with all these police horror stories about PC going around? If you got busted and thrown in jail for smoking a joint on your vacation, you dont think that would completely ruin your trip? You think people are going to come back after that? You dont think that will deter people? I think you are totally wrong

you dillweed. don't you realize that if weed is legalized across the country, bipolar/schitzos like you won't have a job anymore? if it is legalized, the tobacco companies will crush little bugs like you into the ground - given that you certainly won't ever work a day in your life, you will undoubtedly have to move on to cooking meth. if it is legalized, you are going to see the tobacco fields of kentucky ripped up and kind bud beyond anything you can contemplate will be grown in such massive quantities that you won't be able to make any money distributing it.

don't get to big for you britches or you are going to get slapped back to reality. stop acting like you are a lefty - you are the true capitalist that is left in the country. you operate in a true open market without any government interference. you pollute the earth beyond anything those nasty 'righties' could ever even contemplate with your rockwool cubes, your insecticides, and the massive amounts of nutrients that you flush into the sewer system after you feed your plants. do you have any idea that toll people like you are taking on nature?

you are a fraud and you really should just crawl back into your hole, pack up a fat bowl, and try to forget about the fact that you aren't what you want to be.

self-medicating is fine, but don't try to act like you are 'normal.'

100% agree that we all need to start speaking up!!! if this many people, who read this shit rag of a paper online and actually view comments, are this fed up with the police state in park city, imagine how many more are out there! imagine their real names, their stories, the conversations we could have with each other! these conversations could lead to action by the PEOPLE- action to actually look at who is running for office, and vote accordingly- and, guess what, change things through our votes!

problem is... conservatives are all about voting, and they generally vote blind: if it says republican, they vote republican. how about we all try to actually talk about issues facing this county, and vote BEYOND party lines? if you're a republican who has been a victim of the police state the sheriff's office has created... i certainly hope you are NOT going to blindly check off that box next to whoever is running as a republican. and to the democrats, i would say the exact same thing.

it's time to get away from party affiliations and actually look at the people, the records, and the actions of those running for office, and VOTE ACCORDINGLY!
