Eight more officer are leaving in August. No one seems to care much. Today Fairfield has 138 officers and Vallejo has 123. Next month Vallejo will have 115, about the same level as the 1970's.
Citizens need to wake up and speak out. If they don't care why should the cops.

What group? Sweet Manilla Juice is a white boy attempting to cause more problems in our community. He goes by a number of tags including Sawanka, Finna Say and a number of others. This thread is about a criminal act that had nothing to do with race. You and many others who will post on this thread don't give a damn about the victim or the suspects. This is just your opportunity to blog hate. So stop it.

In this case VPD caught the suspect, so good work. But please stop trying to spread fear in our city. We care about our community but many of us are tired of your fear-mongering tactics.

I appreciate that people are pointing out how depleted our police force is. 1970 levels? Are you not concerned about that? My neighborhood is. At this rate, it could dip below a hundred by end of the year. One does not have to be on either "side" of the battle between PSU's and the critics to point out the dangerously low numbers of police. The numbers of criminals in this area is not going down.

My neighbor is concerned about how he is going to afford to put gas in his car or make his next mortgage or whether he will have a job to do either one of those things. Sure I'm concerned about VPD staff levels but attempting to scare me wiht every crime story that appears in the newspaper doesn't work. In fact it turns me off. If we are experiencing lower staff levels within our VPD talk to Vallejo residents about being more proactive in our communties. Do we need to step up our neighborhood watch groups? Do we need to watch out for and know our neighbors? Those are legitimate ways to fight crime - spreading fear isn't.

Spread This, I guess Stop It doesn't understand the word education. There are no "fear" tactis being used. It is merely educating the public that has no idea how the loss in numbers will change this city. For the past 30 years, Vallejo had the fortune to choose 1 out of every 1000 candidates for fire and police jobs prior to BK. This city has had the best working force in Northern California providing service to the public for years. Now, there are only 10 people applying for each department, many of which have been fired, released from duty for unsatisfactory performance, or couldn't make it through the rigorous hiring standards at other agencies . Those are the candidates that are presently being considered to fill vacancies in this city. Those are the facts. Does "you get what you pay for" ring a bell???.... If you are scared because of what is happening, you should be.

Neighborhood watch groups???....Novel Idea, but who are you going to report criminal activity to? The answering machine?....Those kinds of programs used to be funded by the city and have been kicked to the curb a long time ago. Can you say "Beat Health"?..Go do a poll in your neighborhood, or better yet, go to south Vallejo, the Crest, or College Park and organize a neighborhood watch group. See how many people will be willing to participate without the police being involved. Step it up and invite "ALL" of your neighbors over to your house to talk about this idea(You can't be picky on the neighbors in your hood either). See what kind of response you get. Many of the good people in these neighborhoods are scared of being targeted by the thugs and dope dealers living amongst them to say anything to the police. Call and schedule a ridealong (if you are not a felon) with your police department to see what you are in for, before you bite off more than you can chew. Oh Stop It, The fact of the matter is you wouldn't do your job for any less you are doing it for now, would you?...Or do you have a job?...Perhaps, you should volunteer your time at your local fire or police department and give back to your community before you suggest I give you anything. If you stop treating those communties with contempt you will get all the help you need. BTW, I know you guys have a tough job but as far as I'm concerned, ridealongs are desgined to scare people. I have better things to do with my time.

We care about our community but many of us are tired of your fear-mongering tactics. My intent is not to spread fear. It is to bring to light the critical staffing shortage currently facing the PD,which is only going to get much worse before it gets better. You can draw you own conclusion on its impact. You see, you won't hear any of this from our politicans. Their decision to file BK is what caused the crisis. Right or wrong, they can't even acknowledge it is happening. If it was not for an occational story by the TH, this blog is the only place you would hear about the gravity of the situation. Just last week there were background investigators from SFPD (four officers going), Antioch, Napa and Santa Rosa. One just left for Oakland and the two Vallejo cadets who graduated from the OPD academy on Thursday declined jobs at VPD and took Oakland PD. Have you even tried to call into VPD lately. Unless you call 911, you can't even talk to a person (you might wait a while for 911 to answer but keep trying). There are empty desks and offices at 111 Amador, a building constructed in 1960 to accomidate the PD back then. So, regardless of what "side" you are on, it is important to recognize the gravity of the situation. If, after being informed of the situation, the decision is to do nothing, then so be it. But it is important for people to understand. As I said before, you won't here this from any politican in the city.

Pull money out of magical hat to pay bloated salaries? I understand that staff levels have changed but I want to hear what we, as a community CAN do, not just the hell and damnation posted by Spread This and Broken Arrow.
