If people want State parks, they should pay for them on a per use basis. If people want nature, they should tear down all the buildings and disallow inbound materials such as paper, cans, cars, bottles, and clothing so no maintenance s required.

How ridiculous!
Send the gov't employees home.
Keep the parks open.
Gov't employees and services just aren't that important.
Let's put more faith in private initiative.

How about making volunteering at a State park a condition of receiving a State grant for college.

How about we take some of the millions of dollars we spend to sew up gang bangers in emergency rooms, money lost to welfare fraud, social security fraud, and educating illegals and spend that instead? We would have so much money then we could eliminate car registration fees entirely.

The parks are great resource for families especially with houses that are built with zero lot lines and no room for families to play. Charge the builders fees for parks. And stop giving away state assets and revenues to special interests and developers. When is the public going to wake up and realize we are being robbed slowly and surely through all the public giveaways?

crazy how all of the above solutions/comments make so much more sense than what the State Parks/Gov have provided! I think they are just upset that hundreds of millions of dollars, from people who probably won't even visit a State Park, will NOT be funneled into their pockets any time soon. Crooks.

How is it that the state cannot fund mantainance of State Parks and State highways? Could it be that the funds for parks and highways are now used to pay state workers full retirement benefits after only 20 years of service. Could it be that It takes two city workers to do the work of one Private sector employee. Each year we probably pay out more in retirement benefits than we pay actively working state employees ! Enjoy the new and improved lifestyle in California, taxes to pay fabulous benefits to state employees that no one else can attain in the private sector and if you want to enjoy a day at the park well, that's gonna cost ya !!

The State's liability to CalPERS amounts to 3% of the total budget. Retiree benefits come from the separate pension plan--not from funds used to maintain State Parks.

After 20 years, a retiring employee will get from 40-60% of their highest salary when an active employee, depending on the formula. Not exactly full benefits.
