I know how hard it is to see ariuond the bridge when you turn into the Red earth truck stop. Caltrans needs to hurry up and get the traffic problem fixed.
I am surprised of all the accidents and near misses the job isn't completed yet. Comming back from town sometimes it's a guessing game, are they going to wait or pull out?
CALTRANS, complete your mission. It's just a road. How many more must suffer or die?

Cal-trans puts in a traffic light after 3 fatalities in the same area in a 6 month time frame. I know the father and the baby died, the mother was life flighted, but I don't know what happened to her as I have not followed up on that yet.

It's horrible when people know that we should have these things in place, but that CALTRANS measures the need by the loss of life...

Maybe they should change the name from "Red Earth Casino" to "Red Asphalt Casino".

Everybody knew that there would be preventable deaths at that intersection when they proposed building the casino.

The victims blood is on the hands of CALTRANS & the Torres Martinez Tribe.

You didn't upset me. I work in the EMS field, not part of the Volunteer FD of the SCSD anymore though. So forgive me for getting my information incorrect as I was relying on information second hand.

Two people, a father and son, are dead because they were not buckled)Â…The California Highway Patrol says the tragedy occurred at around 8:20 Sunday morning.

The father and son, 23-year-old Santiago Mendez Jr. and 1-year-old Santiago Lorenzo Mendez were passengers in a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Erika Garcia. All three were from Salton City. The C H P says Garcia was driving the vehicle, a Camry, Northbound on Highway 86, and attempted to turn onto the access road to the Red Earth Casino and Travel Center. The C H P says the turn was made directly in from of a Silverado pick up, being driven by 30-year-old Auburn Williams from Hanford, California. Williams could not avoid the Camry, and the pick up collided with the vehicle on the passenger side. The collision pushed the Camry into a Ford pick-up that was stopped on the access Road waiting to enter the Highway. The C H P airplane was in the area monitoring speed limits, and was the first on the scene. A Highway Patrol Helicopter was requested. Paramedics pronounced the one-year-old dead at the scene. His father was flown to Pioneers Memorial Hospital in Brawley. The 23 year old died from his injuries at the Hospital. Garcia suffered moderate injuries and was also transported to P M H. Deputy Coroner Henry Proo says the father and son probably suffered such severe injuries because they were not seat belted. The child was in his safety seat, but not strapped in. An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death for both the father and son. No other serious injury was reported.

Of fifteen comments on this site there are at least five (or more) that have nothing to do with this tragic accident, the victims, or how the survivors are currently doing.
'Get a life'(??!!!!!) What are you thinking!
The problems of SCSD nor your particular agenda and opinions of each other belong anywhere near here ------ your concerns & priorities really need to be reviewed and placed somewhere other than here.
As a resident of the West Shores - my apologies to 'person' a friend of the family who had to endure the rantings of some of the incentive people who unfortunately live here.
My personal condolences to all who were involved, those who survived and had to read some of the comments made here.
This was not a fair representation of the majority of people who live in this are.

Dear person,
I am not sure if you have revisited this site since the uncaring personal comments by some people; but if you will, please let us know how the mother is. I have not ever lost a child, but I have lost a spouse during early mid-life -- please let the mother know there ARE people on the West Shores who do actually care. It does not matter whether any of them were from the West Shores area (the accident happened here). They are a family and she has suffered a tremendous loss!!
There really is nothing that anyone can say to make that any better or less bitter!
The one thing I would like to express is that I have turned left at that same site, and am never sure that I will make the turn safely. PLEASE let her know this was not her fault just because she was the driver.
That definately is a dangerous turn and Imperial County, CALTrans, and Torres Martinez do need to do something about it before anymore families are destroyed!!

to set some sort of record stright, wrenchhand and Imari both are slightly incorrect with the caltrans light. it takes NINE FATALS for caltrans will install a light. the Tribe offered to pay for the light but caltrans and the county said NO, & forced the tribe to make the frontage road, which the county/caltrans will not let them finish. Since the travel center/casino opened thier have been alot of near misses and several actual crashes. Just Over the thanksgiving weekend, thier were more crashes at that one intersection, than since they opened. Very fustrating to me is most of the guilty drivers are from either north of riverside (city) or more noticeably ORANGE COUNTY.
Most of those people are driving faster that 85mph with thier motorhomes towing trailers. I actually have seen some of the idiots pass the emergency vehicles going to a accident, or refuse to give them the right of way. Some of them even honked the horn, and signed them to move out of the way. So who is really at fault? the out of towners or ?????

so..."Lets be careful out there" The life we save might be mine....

good nite gracie
