The Radical Christian Right and the War on Government
http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/the_radic...
By Chris Hedges Oct 6, 2013

"There is a desire felt by tens of millions of Americans, lumped into a diffuse and fractious movement known as the Christian right, to destroy the intellectual and scientific rigor of the Enlightenment, radically diminish the role of government to create a theocratic state based on “biblical law,” and force a recalcitrant world to bend to the will of an imperial and “Christian” America. Its public face is on display in the House of Representatives. This ideology, which is the driving force behind the shutdown of the government, calls for the eradication of social “deviants,” beginning with gay men and lesbians, whose sexual orientation, those in the movement say, is a curse and an illness, contaminating the American family and the country. Once these “deviants” are removed, other “deviants,” including Muslims, liberals, feminists, intellectuals, left-wing activists, undocumented workers, poor African-Americans and those dismissed as “nominal Christians”—meaning Christians who do not embrace this peculiar interpretation of the Bible—will also be ruthlessly repressed. The “deviant” government bureaucrats, the “deviant” media, the “deviant” schools and the “deviant” churches, all agents of Satan, will be crushed or radically reformed. The rights of these “deviants” will be annulled.“Christian values” and “family values” will, in the new state, be propagated by all institutions. Education and social welfare will be handed over to the church. Facts and self-criticism will be replaced with relentless indoctrination.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz—whose father is Rafael Cruz, a rabid right-wing Christian preacher and the director of the Purifying Fire International ministry http://www.purifyingfire.org/ministries.htm ministry—and legions of the senator’s wealthy supporters, some of whom orchestrated the shutdown, are rooted in a radical Christian ideology known as Dominionism or Christian Reconstructionism. This ideology calls on anointed “Christian” leaders to take over the state and make the goals and laws of the nation “biblical.” It seeks to reduce government to organizing little more than defense, internal security and the protection of property rights. It fuses with the Christian religion the iconography and language of American imperialism and nationalism, along with the cruelest aspects of corporate capitalism. The intellectual and moral hollowness of the ideology, its flagrant distortion and misuse of the Bible, the contradictions that abound within it—its leaders champion small government and a large military, as if the military is not part of government—and its laughable pseudoscience are impervious to reason and fact. And that is why the movement is dangerous.

The cult of masculinity, as in all fascist movements, pervades the ideology of the Christian right. The movement uses religion to sanctify military and heroic “virtues,” glorify blind obedience and order over reason and conscience, and pander to the euphoria of collective emotions. Feminism and homosexuality, believers are told, have rendered the American male physically and spiritually impotent. Jesus, for the Christian right, is a man of action, casting out demons, battling the Antichrist, attacking hypocrites and ultimately slaying nonbelievers. This cult of masculinity, with its glorification of violence, is appealing to the powerless. It stokes the anger of many Americans, mostly white and economically disadvantaged, and encourages them to lash back at those who, they are told, seek to destroy them. The paranoia about the outside world is fostered by bizarre conspiracy theories, many of which are prominent in the rhetoric of those leading the government shutdown." ...

Congressman Tony Perkins?
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/congres...
Submitted by Brian Tashman on Monday, 10/7/2013

"Will Family Research Council president Tony Perkins run for US Congress next year? LaPolitics reports - http://www.bayoubuzz.com/louisiana-news/louis...

that Perkins, a former Louisiana state representative, is considering a run to succeed Rep. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), who is running for US Senate against Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-LA).

Just how extreme is Perkins? While leading the FRC, he has:

Praised a Ugandan bill that made homosexuality a crime punishable by death or a long prison sentence as a “laudable” effort “to uphold moral conduct”
http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/why-wou...
Linked sexual assault, http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins... suicide http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/tony-pe... and pedophilia http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/frc-sci... to gay people, arguing there is “a correlation between homosexuality and pedophilia”
Compared homosexuality to alcoholism http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins... and called gay rights advocates “pawns” of Satan http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins...
Warned that anti-bullying efforts http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/frc-bla... are “disgusting” efforts to encourage “perversion” and that same-sex unions are part of a government “population control” plot http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins...
Predicted that President Obama’s re-election would lead to America’s destruction http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins...
Insisted that the Supreme Court would trigger a revolution http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins... and break America apart by issuing rulings favorable to gay marriage http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins...
Lamented the ties between Democrats and the “Jewish lobby” http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/frc-s-t...
Attacked Islam as an “evil” religion http://blog.faithinpubliclife.org/2011/09/ton...
Criticized the military for offering “yoga and meditation classes” http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins...
Maligned proponents of the separation of church and state as “cultural terrorists” http://www.rightwingwatch.org/content/perkins...

But seeing that Perkins is already a leading Religious Right figure who most recently was involved in crafting the GOP’s government shutdown strategy, http://www.politico.com/story/2013/09/senate-... it’s safe to guess that Perkins will remain an influential figure whether he is elected to Congress or not."

Catholic priests exempted from government shutdown
http://www.rifuture.org/catholic-priests-exem...
By Steve Ahlquist on October 8, 2013

"How wonderful would it be for the tea party if, as has been suggested, the Obama Administration were threatening Catholic priests with arrest if they attempted to conduct mass during the shutdown.“Military chaplains,” says Justin Katz, http://oceanstatecurrent.com/longer-twitter/k... are “being ordered not to give Mass, even on a volunteer basis.”

It turns out that the shutdown, engineered by the religious right http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/06/us/a-federa... (and at the behest of Catholic Bishops) http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/10/07/2... has an unintended side effect, at least according to John Schlageter, General Counsel of the Archdiocese for the Military Services. According to Schlageter,

"With the government shutdown, many GS and contract priests who minister to Catholics on military bases worldwide are not permitted to work – not even to volunteer. During the shutdown, it is illegal for them to minister on base and they risk being arrested if they attempt to do so."

I would wager that prior to Schlageter’s op-ed, no reasonable person would have considered arresting a Catholic priest for volunteering to conduct mass. No prosecutor would bring charges, no judge would allow such a charge to stand, and no jury would convict. But we shouldn’t be surprised: religious conservatives often become agitated over imagined controversies like government funded abortions (which are illegal under federal law) and the manufactured “War on Christmas.”

There is simply no way a Catholic priest is going to be fined or imprisoned for conducting a mass on a volunteer basis, despite Schlageter’s protestations. So why do religious conservatives continue to press this issue? I would suggest two reasons.

The first is the advancement of religious privilege. During the shutdown all government services and contract priests were effectively laid off. Under the Antidefiency Act, a law passed in 1870, the federal government is prohibited from incurring debts Congress has not approved. This is the kind of prudent legislation that Congress passed in the good old days when the institution was not dysfunctional due to Tea Party infestation. Contract priests are like any other “non-essential” government contractor, and they are not technically permitted to work during the shutdown. But because of the First Amendment, there’s a perceived difference between being a priest and being a janitor."

Shlageter’s op-ed was less than four days old before the House of Representatives passed a resolution, by a margin of 400 to 1, encouraging the military not to cancel religious services during the shutdown. Unlike every other government services and contract worker, priests and ministers will be rendered special, exempt from a law that affects the rest of us. In the United States, everyone is equal, except for Catholic Priests and other holy ministers, who are more equal. Schlageter’s letter and the House action reinforces clerical privilege." ...

continued from:
http://www.rifuture.org/catholic-priests-exem...

..."The second reason for Schlageter’s op-ed and the reason why the story has been given such special attention in the right-wing press is due to the continued efforts of the United States Conference of Bishops to apply any and all pressures on the Obama Administration to alter the Affordable Care Act. As alluded to above, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) wrote to House members urging the government be shutdown “unless religious employers were given a special right to deny birth control coverage to their employees.“ http://rhrealitycheck.org/article/2013/10/06/...

As Adele Stan puts it so well in her piece:

"The bishops want to be on the record as champions of health care for the masses, food for the hungry, and shelter for the homeless—things the government, when operational, helps to provide. But they’re happy to block access to such services for those in need of them unless Congress agrees to block women of all faiths or none, on the whim of an employer, from receiving prescription birth control as part of the preventive care benefit in the Affordable Care Act."

Schlageter works for the Archdiocese for the Military Services which is part of the USCCB. Conservative Catholics and Christians desperately want to convince us that due to Obamacare, their religious liberty is at stake, contrary to all evidence. In this context, Schlageter’s op-ed becomes another weapon to beat President Obama and the ACA with.

As the world falls under the spell of Pope Francis, who seems so forward thinking and genial, especially when compared to his predecessors, we forget that the Catholic Bishops are still working to strip women of their reproductive healthcare rights, still opposed to virtually all forms of birth control, and still advocates against LGBTQ rights here and abroad. Despite his words, Pope Francis has not altered one jot of Catholic dogma and one of Francis’s closest advisors, Cardinal Dolan of Boston, continues to lead the USCCB on an all-out assault on Obamacare.

That assault includes urging the USCCB urging Congress to default on its obligations by not raising the debt ceiling, which could, economists warn, plunge the world into a depression that will make the 1930′s look like the 1950′s. Millions could be plunged into poverty, starvation and disease because the Catholic Church opposes women’s reproductive rights.

Jesus supposedly said, in Matthew 26:11,“The poor you will always have with you…” The Catholic Church, it seems, is willing to do everything in its power to make sure Jesus didn’t get that wrong."

This should make you feel better:

A woman in a hot air balloon realized she was lost. She lowered her altitude and spotted a man in a boat below. She shouted to him: "Excuse me, can you help me?
I promised a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don't know where I am."

The man consulted his portable GPS and replied: "You're in a hot air balloon, approximately 30 feet above ground elevation of 2,346 feet above sea level. You are at
31 degrees, 14.97 minutes north latitude and 100 degrees, 49.09 minutes west longitude."

She rolled her eyes and said, "You must be a Republican.

"I am," replied the man. "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct. But I have no idea what to do with your information, and I'm still lost. Frankly, you've not been much help to me."

The man smiled and responded, "You must be an Obama Liberal Democrat."

"I am," replied the balloonist. "How did you know?"

"Well," said the man, "you don't know where you are or where you are going. You've risen to where you are, due to a large quantity of hot air. You made a promise you have no idea how to keep, and you expect me to solve your problem. You're in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but somehow, now it's MY fault."

Conspiracy Theorist Radio Host Calls For Violence If Trucker Protest Fails
http://mediamatters.org/blog/2013/10/09/audio...
TIMOTHY JOHNSON 10/9/13

"Conspiracy theorist Pete Santilli, a spokesman http://www.politico.com/story/2013/10/trucker... for Truckers Ride for the Constitution http://ridefortheconstitution.org/ suggested that violence against the government would be justified if his group's plan to jam the Capital Beltway that surrounds Washington, D.C., and ask members of Congress to resign fails.

Santilli is the host of a radio show that promotes conspiracy theories, including the notion that "The World Trade Center towers were turned to dust in mid air by a very powerful energy source." He also drew widespread attention http://mediamatters.org/blog/2013/05/20/santi... including from the Secret Service -- in May when he suggested that Hillary Clinton should be "shot in the vagina" for treason.

Reports that truck drivers would circle the Beltway to cause congestion from October 11 to October 13 and call for the arrest of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) quickly garnered national media coverage. But as U.S. News & World Report noted, the event is disorganized as a result of infighting among its organizers over logistics and what the protest should seek to accomplish.

Santilli and organizer Zeeda Andrews, who promoted the protest on Fox News' On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, appear to have coopted the event from one of its original promoters, Earl Conlon, who now says he merely intended to "stir the feather of the mainstream media." Media Matters noted that Andrews has promoted racism and bizarre conspiracy theories, including the belief that President Obama and Osama Bin Laden are the same person.

Santilli, whose radio show is prominently featured on the Truckers Ride for the Constitution website, told U.S. News that no arrest attempt will be made on members of Congress, but that he hopes members will "voluntarily resign" as a result of his protest.

But on his radio show, Santilli threatened a "bloody battle" against the United States government if his peaceful protest failed and said that opponents of the government are presently "justified" in using violence.

During the October 7 broadcast of The Pete Santilli Show, Santilli said that raising the debt ceiling would amount to "financial terrorism" and "an act of terroristic war upon the American people." Noting that, "we will respond," Santilli said, "if we were to respond violently with the Second Amendment it would be the equivalent of us going out and doing a preemptive strike on our foreign enemies. That it would be justified at this point because of the war that has been perpetrated upon our American people."

During his rant, Santilli also complained that the government wants to "take my guns away" in order to arm Al Qaeda.

Santilli claimed, "If we do not rise up this week, peacefully, there is going to be Three Percenters who I will also join, to make it not so peacefully." The term Three Percenter is a reference to a claim commonly circulated by anti-government extremists that an armed three-percent of the population would be able to violently overthrow the United States government.

Claiming that a violent revolution would be inevitable if the semi-trailer truck protest failed to accomplish its goals, Santilli claimed that Three Percenters will take "the next logical step to stop our domestic enemies." He added, "I'm prepared myself to give my life in this effort as a United States Marine.""

By their words and deeds, we see that the love of democracy by at least some conservatives is a mile wide and an inch deep. After losing the popular vote in 5 of the last 6 Presidential elections, and losing the nationwide vote for the House of Representatives by over a million votes, what do we hear from the political right?

We get impeachment, secession, a military coup, shutting down the government to stop a law they cannot repeal via the ballot.

I would suggest that anyone who advocates abandoning the electoral process of our republic in order to accomplish a political goal, in no way represents what this country is supposed to stand for.

There are people in the world who advocate the use of violence against lawfully elected government in order to achieve goals that cannot be accomplished through peaceful, political action.

We call them terrorists."

Remember our report that PBS's addiction expert, Bill Moyers, was accused of drunk driving in Vermont? He insisted he was following the speed limit and was "in full control of my faculties," but today he ate those words and pleaded guilty to negligent driving.

He was fined $750, ordered to take a drunken-driving course, and given a choice of paying $1,000 to an anti-drunk-driving group or doing 200 hours of community service, court staff said in Bennington

Bill is a millionaire several times over...Thanks to PBS and your tax dollars. Ironic isn't it?

Why would anyone take Moyers seriously?
Moyers, an LBJ flack and one of the architects Great Society (I shall attempt to restrain my laughter at the use of the term in reference to Johnson's massively wasteful expansion of the nanny state), which helped create PBS & NPR

Ok, Truthout is radically to the left. But also, Infowars is radically to the right. Seems like most often the truth is in the grey areas in-between.
