Windham Co. has least affordable housing

A recent report from the Vermont Housing Finance Agency reports Windham County is still the least affordable area in the state to purchase a home.

While more money for a affordable housing development may be a good thing, these statistics are misleading. For example, Realtor.com currently has several homes for sale in Bellows Falls for $100,000 and under, several very nice homes in the neighborhood of $130,000, and a substantial selection of well-kept larger houses between $130,000 and $200,000, averaging around $165,000. What's priced above $200,000 is mostly large estates in the countryside. So when calculations about the "median" home claim it costs $200,000, that's after lumping the swank estates of the truly rich in with the very available and affordable houses that those of us in the working and middle class can buy. That gives a completely distorted picture.

I rather doubt that the average worker in BF makes that kind of money with the exception of municipal employees, teachers,fire and police and Union workers.

All of the local industry does not even come close to that level of pay here in Bellows Falls VT.
