No hurricanes and Colorado flooding?

Is there a connection between the lack of hurricanes this year and the once every 500 year flooding event in the surroundings of Denver.

I thought hurricanes could be through of as a relief valve...its function is to quickly carry heat, energy and moisture into the northern latitudes.
