Board seeks details on massive solar project
By HOWARD WEISS-TISMAN / Reformer Staff
..."Winstanley Enterprises wants to build a two-megawatt solar farm on its land along Interstate 91 just north of the West River near the Holiday Inn Express. Developers hope to get a Certificate of Public Good from the Vermont Public Service Board to install approximately 8,316 solar panels on 1,040 posts"...

Solar Project at Northfield
http://www.firstlightpower.com/northfield/new...

Northfield Mountain on Route 63- home to a 2 megawatt (MW) solar installation, one of the largest solar in-stallations in New England.

18,000 photovoltaic panels that are 32.5 feet by 8.0 feet, mounted at a 30 degree tilt on three helical (spiral) footing pipes erected to a height of approximately 10 feet above the finish grade. All in all, there will be about 30 rows of panels covering approximately 11 acres.
This is the first utility scale solar installation for any of our companies in North America.

Anyone who has driven by the now completed Northfield solar installation will undoubtedly agree that it could be equated to an eleven acre parking lot surrounded by security grade chain link fencing.

Just in case you didn't catch this:

Northfields 2MW development - 18,000 photovoltaic panels that are 32.5 feet by 8.0 feet.

Brattleboro's proposed 2MW development -approximately 8,316 solar panels on 1,040 posts"...

People who are against overly extensive renewable development are not NIMBYs. They are not blithely ignoring environmental considerations or greedily focusing on financial factors. In fact, some renewable projects donít offer enough benefit to justify their undesirable impacts. It is quite possible to be in favor of moderate renewable development and environmental stewardship. Indeed, in my opinion, moderate renewable development and environmental stewardship are two ideas that go well together.
Of course we should encourage conservation, and to its credit, the Comprehensive Energy Plan is very clear on that. On the other hand, future conservation is built into my estimates of electricity demand. But even with conservation, there will be significant electricity demand, and we have to plan for it.

Did you catch this one too?

The Winstanley Enterprises 2MW solar project in Brattleboro is on 20 acres.

The Northfield MA 2MW solar installation is on eleven acres.

Or could this project be little more than a repeat of the Brattleboro Home Depot fairytale?

post 7-yet another piece of tripe from nukenut Meredith Angwin whose opinions are akin to Ann 'Radiation is Good For You' Coulter.

I certainly have always supported the 'Don't Jersey Vermont' ideal but it's ridiculous to conflate Joisey and its ugly mega roadways & over-development etc. with Vermont having some solar farms.
Besides,
#1- the view from the highways is not supposed to be the best scenic view, one always has had to get off the beaten path for the pretty quaintness anyway, so by all means Yes they SHOULD put the solar panels by the highway, that area by I-91 and the Holiday Inn is not exactly anyone's 'Back Yard', and Brattleboro isn't quite Real Vermont but still kinda part of flatland-one has to get past Bratt to truly experience real Vermont anyhow. they just put a new 'Welcome to Brattleboro' sign on Canal St. by exit one, aptly made sh't brown in color.

and #2, or rather it should be #1 in importance- solar and wind farms etc. never meltdown and cause mega-cancers unlike nuclear plants!

Nuclear which is of course Not a 'renewable' energy source, no matter what some diehard nuketards may still try to claim

Howard Weiss-Tisman is the Reformer twit who writes articles about "the Fourth of July" without ever calling it by its proper name.

Michigan's solar industry has a dirty secret: It needs a lot of coal-fired power.
The process of manufacturing base materials and panels to capture electricity from the sun is energy-intensive, utility officials say.

And that energy comes mostly from fossil fuels in Michigan, where up to eight new coal-fired power plants are on the drawing board.

That includes a $2 billion-plus, 800-megawatt plant proposed by Consumers Energy in Bay County's Hampton Township.

Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. in Saginaw County, a major world manufacturer of solar base materials, is Consumers' largest single electricity user.

'fossil fuels' is a friggin misnomer
fossils and fuels have nothing to do with each other

forget that crap, we've got a Real problem over there in Michigan with the G-d Anti-Christian Lawyers Union starting trouble again...

ACLU complaint leads Michigan high school to ban 'Tebowing' prayers after football games saying that prayer violated separation of church and state,
http://www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2013/...

(the stupid damn school officials are pushovers and need not be bullied by the ACLU. Individual students engaging in a little prayer at school is Not a violation of the supposed Sep. of C & S, which is a concept not really in the Constitution anyhow. There ought to be a lawsuit against the ACLU over this and those jews will be made to back the hell off again, hopefully the Rutherford Institute or other good lawyers group will take them on.
Those kids who want to 'Tebow' should keep doing it anyway, get kicked out by the idiot school admin and sue sue sue!)

The Vernon stationís eight turbines produce 22 megawatts of electric power and
Vermont Yankee is another 620MW. Does it make any sense at all to eliminate 20 acres of green space to produce an aditional 2MW?

If it is a SPEED project then it is $.27 and that being well above the wholesale rate that the utilities are compensated with permitted higher rates. The subsidy is paid by everyone else who buys power. A hidden tax estimated at about $15/household per month when the proposed program is built out.

Vermont is contracted with Seabrook Nuclear Power Station; buy local is a meaningless slogan.
