What economic development?

What economic development?

There are 12 comments on the The Brattleboro Reformer story from Nov 12, 2013, titled What economic development?. In it, The Brattleboro Reformer reports that:

There is a labor shortage in Windham County. So when Dave Altstadt -- of the Windham Workforce Investment Board -- and Andy Robinson -- of the Vermont Department of Labor -- announced that they intended to organize a career expo for Windham County, I imagined those old cartoon clips when you hear crickets in the corners of a cavernous, empty room.

The Arts Economy produces nothing but entry level jobs.

If there was a labor shortage wages would go up and people would be job hoping to higher wages.

Dartmouth had hundreds of people show up for a few medical office clerk jobs.

C&S has a help wanted ad, they want experienced order pickers certified to use forklifts. They could claim a labor shortage based on who has experience and certification for such a job that would want the job ? They need to train their own new hires and pay them enough to retain them and treat them right.

The fact they are always looking for help says a lot. If it was a good job there own employee's would be hooking up friends and relatives with a job and people would be lined up hoping somebody could pull some strings for them and get them in the door.

How does Grafton do it Joe? Oh that's right, the Windham Foundation is a non profit out of NJ. That's the Montpelier fantasy for all of VT.

Our Governor feels that VT has so much potential for outside money that he traveled to China to collect it for us.

Get government grants and do studies and run not for profits babbling about economic development while giving no examples. We got another trinket shop in Chester.
Vermont's economic policy, lure in the next dreamer who made money someplace else who will invest in the Vermont dream of running a small business.
The Bob Newhart economy, run a Inn, bring lots of money the Inn will never turn a profit and pay for itself or open a tourist trap trinket shop and hope money but give up after a few years and let the next dreamer take over.

And the Windham Foundation is not doing all that well either.

The really nutty people in Vermont and I include most of our liberal politicians think that there is something about Vermont that is so attractive that people with money will want to come here. What they are missing is that people with money want to go where there is a financial reason to go. And usually those places are beautiful too.

yeah but the places that nuketards go to for making $$ are not beautiful afterward, like the ghost towns of Pripyat and Fukushima where the vegetation etc. are overgrown and especially those uranium mines that the 'Nukes Are Green' crazies don't want us to think about. The Pacific was something I had hoped to see but now the fish are all dying and it's becoming a ghost ocean
