FU "Sound", why do you give a damn? You live in NH, so why does it get your panties in such a bunch? Seems like your own neck of the woods has its own problems you could deal with.

I lived in Putney for over 14 years. I raised my kids there, so I still have a lot of memories.

Well Putney is my legal address although I spent many years in the Vt. correction circuit. Good to be free.

Well, its all relative. To somebody from mountain areas out West, or Europe, or South America, or Canada or ... etc ... this IS the flatlands!

Hmmmm. Not quite sure what you are saying there, but as an Alex J. sheeple - I'm sure you will at least understand the truth and harsh reality of this:

MA, CT, VT, NH, MI, northern NY ... yankees. I've never met folks who's egos are so dependent on thinking this is somehow a RUGGED place to live. Its not, temperatures, elevation, steepness, snowfall, etc ... this land is candyass compared to the west, and to most of the worlds high spots. But why are easterners SO needing to feel like its TOUGH to live here? Things west of the Mississippi are STILL more rough then they are here in fact.

Eastern tenderfoots.

The highest point in New England is Mt. Washington in NH. Which puts NH 18th on the list for highest point in each state.

Of course the top of the list are states you'd expect, in the Rockies and Sierras. But some states you wouldn't expect have higher points than VT/NH, like:

Tennessee, North Carolina, South Dakota, Texas.

So folks form those states can accurately call yankee's "flatlanders"

So, you didn't just meet a frightened man up near the top, you met a frightened *black* man! Good thing you mentioned that detail!

Again, it ain't really about the lay of the land, it's a mindset. Real Vermonters get it.
Read this Vermonter's excellent piece-

And if it was about size of mountains, that national ski magazine I just saw wouldn't have voted Stowe as being one of THE 5 best ski areas in the country
