They were all aching to escape from mind boggling poverty.

I think the government is insecure...they are intentional downplaying the causalities and mounting problems afraid the government might fall.

Maybe there is so much infrastructure damage they need to evacuate 100,000s of people to the main island near Manila. I suggest Subic Bay...

Build a temporary tent city...

But I bet you it politically unpalatable for the main island...so just turn your head to the suffering...

Could the Philippines be Japan or South Korea? Of course it could be.

Spain, Europe and USA screwed up the Philippines horribly with mismanagement. As with Cuba and most of South American. We set the Philippines up to be invaded by Japan...then we had to destroy them in order to save them. We weren’t much better post WW II.

Marcos was our dictator in the Philippines...we propted him up to maintain Subic Bay and our Vietnam wars. We set him up to become hated by his people...thereby torpedoing Subic Bay. It is probably why goverment is not trusted in the philpines today and power is decentralized.

What if beginning in the 19th century and ending to this day, what if we had pure hearts and we helped the Philippine develop into modernity. We helped them develop like Japan, Germany South Korea and now China, Hong Kong or Taiwan...what if they had become the best they could be.

Would the outcome of Typhoon Haiyan be different if the Philippines was at the apex of modernity and development.

TACLOBAN, Philippines -- Desperation triggered anarchy in communities flattened by Typhoon Haiyan as survivors of one of the most violent storms to ever hit land struggled to find food, clean water and medicine Wednesday.

Police were working to keep order across the region devastated by 195 mph winds and huge storm surges amid reports of armed gangs roaming the streets.

The U.S. military has started running 24-hour relief operations as the Philippine army tries to establish security so help can get to the areas most affected by the devastating typhoon that hit the island country.

ANC Television said security forces exchanged fire with armed men amid widespread looting of shops and warehouses for food, water and other supplies in the village of Abucay in Leyte province. The report could not be verified by NBC News.

Eight people were crushed to death as thousands of people stormed a rice warehouse in Alangalang and carted away up to 100,000 sacks of rice, National Food Authority spokesman Rex Estoperez told The Associated Press.

Where is Benigno Aquino III?

The next story is: aid work assassinated or gunned down in Tacloban.

All aid and relief workers ordered to leave affected areas.

Maybe a well-known network anchor shot dead on TV?
