Our new economy already has a banner flying at the Dome.

Hemp advocates gathered at the Vermont Statehouse Tuesday for a flag-raising ceremony of sorts.

The American flag made of hemp has traveled across the country from Colorado to the Capitol building in Washington D.C. People here say it's a show of support for Vermont's new hemp growing law.

Vermont, along with Colorado and Washington state, now allow it for industrial hemp, despite an ongoing federal ban. Advocates say a recent decision by the feds not to interfere with state marijuana laws is good news.

"They're not going to enforce hemp laws either, so we see this as a positive green light that farmers should be ready to go," said Robb Kidd of Rural Vermont.

Supporters say hemp is a versatile agricultural product that can be used for food or fiber products. So far, about four farms have signed up with the Agency of Agriculture to grow it.

But the town apparently “leaks money” to neighbors such as Keene, N.H.(and Hinsdale, and Greenfield)

"The median annual income for workers in Brattleboro is about $12,629 less than the state’s median income of $53,422, said Muldrow.

One in three households earns less than $25,000 a year, he added. About 40 percent of households bring home more than $50,000."
