Vermont Yankee has been an excellent neighbor and great partners to the community at large. I want to thank all of the VY families who have made our region a better place to live over the forty plus years of operation. I wish you well.

Windham County will be going through a process that can be compared with falling dominos. Over 50% of BUHS students are already eligible for free and reduced lunch and with 600+ good paying jobs being eliminated in the near future, the working poor are going to be heavily impacted.

-Exactly!
We won't have to listen to the stupid pro-nuke freaks protesting the Fact that States have rights and CAN have the final say as to whether or not they want a Dirtybomb operating in their midst, and no more whining about "What about our jobs?" blah blah which is what they wasted the PSB's time over in the hearings when job preservation Is Not the purview of the PSB in any way

Now those of us with a f-ing brain who acknowledge the truth about the radiation dangers of nukes can all concentrate our efforts on what to do about Fuktupshita Japan, which in the best case scenario will kill Many More than the one million who acquired cancer and died thanks to Chernobyl- and that's IF the reactors there don't go totally critical which could mean BILLIONS dying

Don't worry, they will find something to jump up and down about. Maybe the transgender thing, since that's become cool in the media.

It has cost a lot of time and money to be hauled into court all the time and endlessly harassed. Vermont will pay the price for doing this, with ever more deepening poverty.

Once a plant formally submits a decommissioning plan to the NRC, there's no going back (theoretically possible but not realistic)

Another ignorant post on a subject you know nothing about. Give it up junior. They can change their minds although I'm sure they have already weighed the options at length. If Vermont were to beg them to stay they probably would change their minds. This decision was economic in that they were going to close a plant somewhere. But they could have closed another plant. Why do that when the problem with the State of Vermont is a big pain in the butt? If Vermont was friendly to Entergy they probably would not be closing VY. Time to vote republican again.

"A lot of people up here don't realize how important it is for the southeastern Vermont economy. There's about 600 jobs there and the average salary is about $100,000. So, probably in terms of large firms in Vermont, it's probably got the highest average salary of any business in the whole state," Woolf said. "Southern Vermont's economy is already not doing well; this is just going to be some more bad news for it. This is much worse proportionately for the Brattleboro area than the recent layoffs at IBM were for the Chittenden County area."

One reporter at the noon press conference brought up the fact that Entergy hasn't paid up for the decommissioning costs
They certainly haven't paid for the looooong term storage of their Dirtybomb's waste either
They're Still operating with no CPG and insist on doing so for at least 1 more year
G-d scofflaws

I can't help but laugh at the Vernon dipsh't curmudgeon Howard Fairman with another of his letters in todays Reformer, especially with the good news today

Only 50%, I'm sure the losers and the burnouts can push that number much higher. Perhaps Vermont Yankee can be replaced by yogurt plants with low wage jobs. Brattleboro Union High School can institute Vocational Ed courses on how to swing a mop, any grads with half a brain will be moving to the flatlands.

The 600 Homer Simpsons can look for work at places like C&S and join the rest of the peasants in the real economy. They are probably the type of people who cheered on school spending as long as they had a big buck job, now they can get a taste of what it's like to pay high property taxes off a crappy job if they can find one.
