I live within spitting distance of the Bratt Police offices. At the back end of the municipal center. As days and weeks go by, I of course see them doing their work. It all looks normal and fine to me usually. But today I watched one cop move an assault rifle from one police car trunk to another. I am an army brat, and it was clearly an AR-15, or an M-16. They are the same except one is semi-auto, and the other can go full.

The point is: for a small town police squad to carry assault weapons in its cars? Seems weird. A SWAT team? Ok. The military, yep. But local town police? Huh?

Anybody have any info here?

North Hollywood shootout
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Hollywood_...

"he North Hollywood shootout was an armed confrontation between two heavily armed and armored bank robbers and officers of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in the North Hollywood district of Los Angeles on February 28, 1997. Both robbers were killed, eleven police officers and seven civilians were injured, and numerous vehicles and other property were damaged or destroyed by the nearly 2,000 rounds of ammunition fired by the robbers and the police.[2]

At 9:17 am, Larry Phillips, Jr. and Emil Mătăs&#2 59;reanu entered and robbed the North Hollywood Bank of America branch. Phillips and Mătăs&#2 59;reanu were confronted by LAPD officers when they exited the bank and a shootout between the officers and robbers ensued. The two robbers attempted to flee the scene, Phillips on foot and Mătăs&#2 59;reanu in their getaway vehicle, while continuing to engage the officers. The shootout continued onto a residential street adjacent to the bank until Phillips was mortally wounded, including by a self-inflicted gunshot wound; Mătăs&#2 59;reanu was killed by officers three blocks away. Phillips and Mătăs&#2 59;reanu are believed to have robbed two other banks using virtually identical methods by taking control of the entire bank and firing automatic weapons for control and entry past 'bullet-proof' security doors, and are possible suspects in two armored vehicle robberies.[3]

Local patrol officers at the time were typically armed with their personal 9 mm or .38 Special pistols, with some having a 12-gauge shotgun available in their cars. Phillips and Mătăs&#2 59;reanu carried illegally modified fully automatic AKMs and an AR-15 rifle with high capacity drum magazines and ammunition capable of penetrating police body armor. They also wore body armor of their own. Since the police handguns could not penetrate the bank robbers' body armor, the patrol officers' bullets were ineffective. SWAT eventually arrived with rifles powerful enough to penetrate the body armor. Several officers also appropriated AR-15 rifles from a nearby firearms dealer. The incident sparked debate on the need for patrol officers to upgrade their capabilities in similar situations in the future.[4]" ...

..."The ineffectiveness of the pistol rounds and shotgun pellets in penetrating the robbers' body armor led to a trend in the United States toward arming selected police patrol officers with semi-automatic 5.56 mm AR-15 type rifles.[14] Seven months after the incident, the Department of Defense gave 600 surplus M16s to the LAPD, which were issued to each patrol sergeant;[31] other cities, such as Miami, also moved to supply patrol officers, not just SWAT teams, with heavier firepower.[32] LAPD patrol vehicles now carry AR-15s as standard issue, with bullet-resistant Kevlar plating in their doors as well.[33] Also as a result of this incident LAPD authorized its officers to carry .45 ACP caliber semiautomatic pistols as duty sidearms, specifically the Smith and Wesson Models 4506 and 4566. Prior to 1997, only LAPD SWAT officers were authorized to carry .45 ACP caliber pistols, specifically the Model 1911A1 .45 ACP semiautomatic pistol.[34]" ...

What I would argue around little town-state area here, we don't pay the police enough salary and they don't feel secure enough in their jobs...certainly they don't have enough professional high quality training and their equipment isn't on the leading technological edge.

We don't collectively appreciate how important the police are to us.

And the DA...
Thanks for your service

Law enforcement deserves a lot more respect than they get. I agree that they don't get paid enough and I might add that they could use a few more boots on the ground.

It would be nice if people offered them a little more encouragement, next time you encounter a peace officer try and thank them for their service. A few kind words can go a long way.

I was curious about the weapons, it was just a bit of a shock standing there with my young son and having him say "dad, is that a machine gun he has?" I do think that if we were to get a psycho shooting people here in Brattleboro, I want the police to have the capability to quickly take them out.

And I quite agree about being friendly to our police, people forget that they work for us! And they should make a lot more money. Many, really most, of them are excellent and dedicated folks. But you would attract even more great folks if the income were higher. Don't you want the folks carrying guns around you and your children to be at the top of the heap of applicants? Teachers and Police Officers should be making a lot more money, and Doctors and Lawyers a lot less! It should be a bit more of a level playing field, with the best candidates going for what they are skill/passionate about, not letting $ pull them away from their true calling.

It says a lot about how screwed up our societies priorities are that teachers are paid so little.

Our taxes are wasted doing ridiculous things like building football stadiums where we hold up ball players as heroes who get paid millions while our teachers are treated like fast food clerks.

I disagree with you about doctors however in that the amount we pay them has more to do with the dysfunctional system they have to work within and less to do with what they actually get paid.

I might add that the people who do our least desirable jobs ought to be paid at least a living wage, but that is a whole other conversation.

Yeah, priorities in general are whacked. It would apparently take about 30 billion $ to set up sustainable food systems for all the worlds hungry. Which is what the world spends in about one week on our militarism.

I grew up in a family of doctors, mom, dad, and sister. And my sister is a good example of a bit of a pay absurdity. She is an eye surgeon at the top of her career, and I know she is making more than 1/2 million $ a year. And, I love her very, very much! Medical school should be cheaper, and she should indeed be well compensated for your excellent work. But $500k+ a year? When a teacher could be making $35k a year? They are helping steer the next generation, and therefore the future of our nation!

There are a lot more expenses for a surgeon than the gigantic school loans like paying for an office and it's staff, malpractice insurance and often the high housing costs near hospitals.

But yes tachers pay is patheticly low.

Yes I agree, social workers deserve more than they get in both pay and resources. They and the people they help could certainly benefit from better training as well.

Pastor Takes Credit for 2011 DC Earthquake

Brian Tashman on Tuesday, 12/18/2012

"In 2011, Texas Gov. Rick Perry partnered with pastor John Benefiel, a self-proclaimed Apostle who leads the Heartland Apostolic Reformation Network, for his The Response prayer rally. Like many of the other pastors promoting The Response, Benefiel has some rather curious views. For example, he claims the Statue of Liberty is a “demonic idol” and that the District of Columbia is under the control of demonic powers. While appearing on Sid Roth’s show It’s Supernatural!, Benefiel argued that the Statue of Freedom on top of the Capitol and the Washington Monument are demonic symbols.

He told Roth that his group went to Washington in 2011 to issue a Baal divorce decree [PDF], which he maintains frees places from control of the demonic god Baal, and that God responded with the August 23rd earthquake which was felt along the east coast. He said the earthquake’s damage to the Washington Monument, the Scottish Rite Temple and the National Cathedral is no coincidence but divine punishment for masonry.“God continues to amaze us all the time,” Benefiel said,“We just did what God says to do and he follows up with this great act.”

Benefiel, who earlier maintained that homosexuality was an Illuminati plot to depopulate the earth, told Roth—after asserting that watching pornography is an act of “Baal worship”—that homosexuality is a result of paganism and Baal’s attempt to “infiltrate our Christianity.”
