Prevented Mortality and Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Historical and Projected Nuclear Power

In the aftermath of the March 2011 accident at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, the future contribution of nuclear power to the global energy supply has become somewhat uncertain. Because nuclear power is an abundant, low-carbon source of base-load power, it could make a large contribution to mitigation of global climate change and air pollution. Using historical production data, we calculate that global nuclear power has prevented an average of 1.84 million air pollution-related deaths and 64 gigatonnes of CO2-equivalent (GtCO2-eq) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that would have resulted from fossil fuel burning. On the basis of global projection data that take into account the effects of the Fukushima accident, we find that nuclear power could additionally prevent an average of 420 000–7.04 million deaths and 80–240 GtCO2-eq emissions due to fossil fuels by midcentury, depending on which fuel it replaces. By contrast, we assess that large-scale expansion of unconstrained natural gas use would not mitigate the climate problem and would cause far more deaths than expansion of nuclear power.

More bad math, there isn't enough woman with eggs to make that many babies. Got me why we waste $1 trillion a year trying to educate people who couldn't even master 3rd grade math.

Total sperm count, or total sperm number, is the total number of spermatozoa in the entire ejaculate. By WHO, lower reference limit (2.5th percentile) is 39 million per ejaculate. The median ejaculation (50th percentile) contained 255 million sperm.[7]

150 million (men in usa) times 50 million per ejaculation for once per day, at all the same time, gives us 7500 million spermies?

Everyone knows men can create a lot more babies than women…it is just really hard getting a women’s permission.

pure stupidity like nukedom cannot 'evolve' mikey, it's a technological cancer that must be killed before it kills us all with cancer.
One Million died young of cancer thanks to Chernobyl (google it) and MANY kids in Japan have stage one cancer and we had tens of thousands of stillborns in the US thanks to those three Fuktupshita GE Mark I reactors going Ka-Blooey

Twenty-seven months after the reactors withstood one of the largest earthquakes in history, only to fall to the largest tsunami in history, over 50,000 people are still being held captive by fear, and their lives are slowly being destroyed by the bogeyman of radiation.

Legitimate scientific reports keep being issued that describe the minimal health effects from the crippled Fukushima reactors, and the severity of the overreaction and forced evacuations of so many people. The two most important reports are the World Health Organization report from February and the recent United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation from two weeks ago (UNSCEAR press release).

There is no question that a specific area around Fukushima is contaminated and needs to be cleaned-up before anyone can re-enter. But that area is relatively small and confined to the >50 mSv/yr zone (>6 microSv/hr). The rest of the area is safe enough to re-occupy by the majority of refugees, and has been for over a year.

The constant theme from all these studies is that

1) the health effects from the radiation will be so minimal as to be not observable, and

2) the forced evacuations and constant fear has had the most harmful health effects of all, most of which could have been avoided with better public education and communication, and with a more realistic response and repopulation plan with more realistic radiation limits.

Popular misunderstanding and application of the Linear No-threshold dose hypothesis (LNT) to the general population was the biggest cause of any harmful effects.

The UNSCEAR report made a very strong and important statement concerning radiation effects from the Fukushima disaster (NYTimes DotEarth):

It is unlikely to be able to attribute any health effects in the future among the general public and the vast majority of workers from exposure to radiation following the leaks and explosions at the earthquake-damaged power plant in March of 2011.

Special health examinations will be given to workers with exposures above 100 mSv including annual monitoring of the thyroid, stomach, large intestine and lung for cancer as a means to monitor for potential late radiation-related health effects at the individual level, but none are expected.

The amount of radiation released, while significant, was still too small when spread out over so much area to have any effect on the Japanese people now or in the future. Or anybody anywhere! Can we please stop scaring the Japanese people now? Can we let them relax and stop hurting themselves with stress that really is causing health effects? Can we let them rebuild their lives the way they should have been able after any huge disaster like the tsunami?

These UNSCEAR findings are similar, but even more definitive, than the previous World Health Organization report in February. Even though the WHO used the LNT incorrectly, against the United Nations’ new recommendations (Radiation No Big Deal), and exaggerated the risk, the report still stated it is unlikely there will be significant health effects from the radiation.

Antinukes are single minded without a doubt. Look how many have turned tail even on global warming once the mainstream realized that nuclear power is a part of the solution! Truth is, a nuke energy supporter is most likely an environmentalist.
