North Korea fires artillery toward waters off its west coast amid tension over warship sinking
Published August 09, 2010
SEOUL, South Korea (AP)— North Korea fired about 110 rounds of artillery Monday near its disputed sea border with South Korea, the South's military said, amid high tension over the deadly sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on North Korea.
The firing came shortly after South Korea ended five-day naval drills off the west coast that the North called a rehearsal for an invasion, vowing to retaliate.
All the artillery shells harmlessly landed into the North's waters and caused no damage to the South, a South Korean Joint Chief of Staff officer said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.
South Korea considered the firing to be part of a military drill by North Korea but still bolstered its military readiness against further provocation, the officer said. The South also warned Pyongyang over the firing by naval radio, he said.
"This was their way of saying 'We'll respond to military drills with military drills,'" said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at Seoul's University of North Korean studies.
Yang said the firing is also aimed at highlighting the instability of the Korean peninsula to apply pressure on the United States to start talks on the signing of a peace treaty to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War. The conflict ended with an armistice, thus leaving the peninsula technically at state of war.
North Korea has long sought a peace treaty and diplomatic relations with Washington to guarantee that the U.S., which has 28,500 troops in South Korea, would not invade and topple Kim Jong Il's government. The U.S. has repeatedly said it has no intention of attacking the North.

North and South Korea Exchange Fire, Killing Two
By MARK McDONALD
SEOUL, South Korea — North and South Korea exchanged artillery fire on Tuesday after dozens of shells fired from the North struck a South Korean island near the countries’ disputed maritime border, South Korean military officials said. Two South Korean soldiers were killed, 15 were wounded and three civilians were injured, said Kiyheon Kwon, an official at the Defense Ministry.
The South Korean military went to “crisis status,” and fighter planes were put on alert but did not take off.
South Korean artillery units returned fire after the North’s shells struck South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island at 2:34 p.m., said Mr. Kwon, adding that the North also fired numerous rounds into the Yellow Sea. Television footage showed large plumes of black smoke spiraling from the island, and news reports said dozens of houses were on fire.
The official North Korean news agency said in a brief statement Tuesday night that the South had started the fight when it “recklessly fired into our sea area.”
The South Korean deputy minister of defense, Lee Yong-geul, acknowledged that artillery units had been firing test shots on Tuesday afternoon close to the North Korean coast, from a battery on the South Korean island of Paeknyeongdo. But he denied Pyongyang’s charge that the shots had crossed the sea border. While skirmishes between the two countries have not been uncommon in recent years, the clash appeared to have been the most serious in decades and came amid heightened tensions over the North’s nuclear program. An American nuclear scientist who recently visited the North said he had been shown a secret and modern enrichment facility….

Well here it is Nov 23 and this thread started back in MAY. Now the little puke in North Korea is at it a gain. With 200 artillery rounds fired onto a South Korean island.Deal with them once and for all with a massive nuclear strike to his bunker hide outs and all the military targets & troop concentration. This would also send a message to the likes of Ajad and his kind that we dont play games any more!.If we don't do it soon, then China and N. Korea will have more defensive counter measures and offensive capabilities. We cant stave off a massive conventional strike against S Korea with out devastating consequences. As we cant count on NATO. We have to go it alone. NOW YOU SEE WHAT NEGOTAION & SANCTIONS AND BEING WEAK GETS YOU. But on second thought we had better kiss there ass until 2012 when we can get a Strong president IN TO OFFICE.

Right, the impossible happens…full scale hostilities on the Korean Peninsula breaks out. America gets dragged into it. Next thing you know they got N Korean professional military bomb experts terrorist running around the world planning attacks on America. They been planning this for decades. They flood cargo aircraft with fedex bombs, many planes fall out of the sky…they do a large scale desperate attacks to infiltrate bombs into commercial passenger aircraft.
I bet you we become Israeli…with suicide bombs going off all around us…or in icon metropolitan areas.
So how will the media government haters and the just plan government haters look after this…
#71 Nov 23, 2010
Mike from what you say they will probably try it as soon as they can get away with it or give muslim extremist chem weapons or nuclear. So why wait if they know we will retaliate they might not do it . But history repeats it self. You cant trust them.
#72 Nov 23, 2010
Why the hell should we get dragged into it?? We got no real interest there and as Ron Paul said today on Alex Jones' show we should get out of there and let China and/or Russia deal with it. Japan has some interest there too, but we don't need to be the worlds police. Thing is- N korea is being blamed as the instigator when S korea admits to shooting first.
You got a lot of highly implausable and frankly impossible doomsday scenarios flying around in your that noggin of yours mikey. Ill take that bet mike, cuz we ain't gunna have suicide bombers everywhere,'Israel' doesn't have then that often, and they haven't had one of their commercial planes blown up and that's been WITHOUT molesting people in airports as we're doing.
Ron Paul: Korea Conflict May Be Orchestrated Crisis To Boost Dollar
nevermiknd 'govt. haters' for crisake mike, what about WAR LOVERS?! The scum that speak for the banksters (the RAND corp. etc.) are now saying a conflict will help the economy. The dollar spiked today after this korea news.
"Despite the fact that South Korea admits it fired the first shots that prompted the North to retaliate, the vast majority of the establishment press are feverishly blaming North Korea for a new escalation in the crisis, while failing completely to acknowledge the fact that the whole fiasco was generated as a direct result of Uncle Sam’s policy through two separate administrations to ensure hereditary dictator Kim Jong-Il and his successors acquired the atom bomb."

Wait till the north Koreans get a hold of this.
I am not the only one gaming the out come.
NYT: Cables shine light into secret diplomatic channels
Gaming out an eventual collapse of North Korea: American and South Korean officials have discussed the prospects for a unified Korea, should the North’s economic troubles and political transition lead the state to implode. The South Koreans even considered commercial inducements to China, according to the American ambassador to Seoul. She told Washington in February that South Korean officials believe that the right business deals would “help salve” China’s “concerns about living with a reunified Korea” that is in a “benign alliance” with the United States.

Will wikileaks cause the reunification of Korea?
#76 Nov 28, 2010
I tell you what, did the USA provoke the North Koreans into attacking the South Koreans...in anticipation of wikileaks. You got to get them South Korean in a high state of alert and preparation...in case the North Koreans go off about our gossipy international cable traffic about their impending collapse stolen and released by wikileaks.
What the hell is going on.
Did the USA intentionally release all this stuff...we are just heightening and amplifying the value of it by making it look like it is stolen.
Oh man, wikileaks must have put us in a higher alert status.
Them god damn Clintons!

This is the case of the danger with cornering a wild and wounded animal.
I think he is going to go full tilt with starting a war...fire a bunch of missiles, artillery and a full scale attack of S Korea hoping the world will make a deal with him.
We could wake up tomorrow in the horror of an unrelenting attack and war...
I think the world is going to be in a huge state of shock and depression...we are going to say we had never seen this coming...
Will we ever trust CNN with how they played this...

I think North Korea thinks they are heading into object national chaos and disorder with the economic restrictions...this is the last chance to fully use the might of their military.
I think the leaders think national disunity is right around the corner...
It is use it or lose it...
