Urinary Tract Infections, Delusions

Here is a first for us…did you a UTI with the elderly can cause delusions and much mental confusions. There seemed to be no symptoms until a drastic mental decline.

But they have become much more happier?

Well, three separate black eyes and a seven inch gash in her head to the skull...it is the first time I ever seen the skull of a living person. There was blood everywhere. I rode the ambulance at 4am in an attempt to calm my friend. I had been going in and out her bed room eight times that night trying to keep her in her bed and trying to remind her her deliriums and thoughts were just make believe...when she jumped out of the bed in panic, fell and hit her head on the corner of the tv stand. That was the second trip to the ER in two days.
On top of deliriums to the UTI...she had a bad response to the powerful antibiotics. Deliriums on top of deliriums... she recognized no one in our family for two days.

Her 80s were basically problem free years. We all agree we just weren’t properly prepared for this...there were symptoms seen in hindsight we downplayed. It always worked in the past. She has been living with us for 20 years...or we lving with her.

So we perceived a behavior change...thought she was just grumpy because her arthritis was bothering her. And it quickly got much worst...we thought she was stroking. Then, oh, we were thinking it, this might be the end. The trip to the ER ...when she got home she just got much worst.

It basically was a beyond imagining horrible three days and much crying...trauma to everyone.

You know, we were all living closely together and struggling through life ...the assumptions was nothing would ever change. As example, she walks around with a cane...she drops it all the time. My wife and I make eyes at each other when it drops. I recently said if she drops that cane one more time I am going to hang myself in the garage. We have had many private discussions about how annoying the cane dropping has become.

Then you find you self in quiet house...walking by an empty bedroom. And we found ourselves perceiving what an empty life we would have without her in the house and with utterly aching and sorrowful hearts.

Walking by that empty bedroom just got worst and worst...

We really didn’t appreciate her enough.

So that is four days that changed the hearts of the Mulligans!

You think, will we ever slide back to our unappreciative lives in our recent past?

So 48 hours in the hospital and a new antibiotic…she is almost back to her old self. She looks like she has been at the bad end of a bar fight.

She still is recovering from her recent trauma to her system…

I tell you what; we are have discovered new positive facets in each of us over this…

My 19 year old going to college boy has always been best buddies with grandma. They talk endlessly about sports and the currents evens in the world. He has always been such a good boy! And we know my daughter has always been good.

Him and I always went together to hospital together…my wife and me team tagged visits in the hospital. He is such a tender child and he is so attached to his grandma. He has so astonishing picked up his care giver role. Grandma, you hungry, and can I get you anything constantly. He has become the feds with making sure we and grandma is taking her antibiotics. He is responsible for the 11pm meds and I am responsible for the 5am pills.

It is like we survived a great traumatic event. We were forced to act as a team…and we all done so well. I am so proud of my family. You get it, we all know we are competent team members. It coalesced us into a better family. There is an elevation and appreciation that human life is more precious than we realized…maybe even realized all of our lives are more precious than we once realized.

In hindsight none of us were anywhere near perfect, well, except grandma…but god dam it, we won’t ever make those same mistakes again. We have all come to that conclusion!

And grandma is the precious princess in our lives…until she puts us all straight…demands!… that she just wants to be treated in a normal fashion.

And what do you think about this, my wife made me a pot of coffee early this morning before she headed off to work. I believe this is the second time!

It certainly is a eye opener!

Sending good thoughts to your loved one. UTI in elderly is sneaky, but altered mental status is a common symptom. Good luck.

Thanks. She is almost back to her old self today. It is the first time we heard about a UTI doing that.

We had a recurrence. We have been much more communicative… what do you see, how is she doing…

Two days ago I told them something is up…they thought I was crazy. Everyone thinks I am crazy! Yesterday my son told me I see this… I called her doctor. His office was closed. Then it was immediately off to the emergency room under our own power. For the six hours in the emergency room…I watched her mentality deteriorate right in front of my eyes.

Her UTI reflared for some reason…

This is how it should have been done the first time!

My ex wife got a UTI every time she slept with someone other than me. At first I didn't make the connection but after a half dozen times when my suspicions were aroused and it corresponded with a new bout with a UTI I concluded it was true. And it was I later learned from her best friend.

Bnd that is how a beloved life ended...

She wanted to die that way...not too much of a burden on her beloved. We would have taken it anyway it came.

I hope I go out like she did...all of her beloved and great grand childen hovering over her for the last two days.

All everyone kept telling her over and over again..."we love you so much granma". And she told us right up to around 2pm today she loved all of us.

I had to trick her to go to the hospital this last time. She wouldn’t go in the beginning. Then she made me promise they wouldn’t admit her... that she be coming back home. I lied through my teeth to her. She kept saying during admittance you promised me this wouldn’t happen. She still had some of her wits with her then.

We’d seen everything in the last few days, but it still feels like she isn’t dead. It doesn’t feel like it is real.

But our house is so empty...

And dealing with her dreaded bedroom...

Granma would always make my son’s breakfast Quesadilla. She has less than 10% vision. My wife says now we are all going to miss all the graded cheese on the floor when she got done with the job. We were always sweeping up cheese off the floor and you just never got it all. It was almost a daily occurrence and of course we never made a comment about it to her.
