US bid to return salmon to Connecticut River ends

The federal government is abandoning a decades-long effort to restore Atlantic salmon to the meandering Connecticut River, saying the $2 million spent each year to bring back the coveted sport fish isn’t worth it. The decision comes as salmon returns this year are among the worst in decades, with some rivers seeing fewer than five returning fish. No one can say for sure why the fish aren’t returning to the rivers.
