This is right on our golden NH seacoast and in the neighborhood of the expensive Wentworth Sea Marina, million dollar homes and magnificent yachts….

New Castle-Rye Bridge fix plan aired
Thursday, July 25, 2013
NEW CASTLE-RYE — The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) will hold a public information meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 14, on the proposed rehabilitation or replacement of the New Castle-Rye Bridge

The meeting will be held at The Common (Recreation Center), 301 Wentworth Road (Route 1B) in New Castle. The formal presentation will begin at 7 p.m., with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. for viewing of the plans.

The New Castle-Rye Bridge, also known as the Wentworth Bridge, is on Route 1B over Little Harbor, next to the Wentworth by the Sea Marina, and connects the communities of New Castle and Rye. The bridge was built in 1942 as part of the defense of Portsmouth Harbor during World War II, and is likely eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.

At the public meeting, four design alternatives for the bridge's rehabilitation or replacement will be presented. Public comment on the designs will be welcomed. The NHDOT also will be seeking input on construction schedules, as three of the four alternatives will require the bridge to be closed for several months.

The current bridge replaced a wooden bridge and consists of a steel grated deck that lifts, though it is raised less than 10 times a year. The bridge underwent major rehabilitation in 1975 and 2009. In 2011, an in-depth bridge inspection resulted in a weight restriction posting to 15 tons

What is the weight restriction on your bridge? Should they change it to one lane with traffic signals at either side? Can you imagine the attention that would draw when the traffic backs all the way through town waiting to get into Hinsdale? How many cars do you suppose cross those bridges on an average day?

7200 car a day in 2010

10,000 in 2012

13,0000 in 2015

I bet you the legal weight of a normal sized truck is allowed (80,000 pounds)...higher than that is not allowed (the restriction).

That whole thing with weight restriction is a bogus issue the, legal weight of 80,000 pounds is allowed.

The whole thing is NHDOT tricky word thing and the idiots newspaper reportors...

So the question should be asked, what is the full legal weight of a truck?...80,000 pounds. Is all the weight allowed?...yes.

So where is the restriction?

If there were restricons there would be clear signs before the bridge saying like restricted to 30 tons or 60,000 tons.

DDoesn't it sound better for the NHDOT and their newspaer reporter lackies saying the bridge is under a weight restriction.

I dare you to go looking for a weight restriction sign.. you won't find one.
