BRASHER FALLS — The wild goose chase is over.

A goose that got stranded on the ice of the St. Regis River several weeks ago was rescued Friday by Bonnie T. Hartford and Judy L. Hilbig.

The bird had managed to make its way onto the shore across from Ms. Hilbig's house. It was then that Ms. Hilbig and Ms. Hartford attempted to catch it.

"Judy and I cornered him. I went one way around him and she went the other way," Ms. Hartford said. "He was flopping around, trying to get away. I kind of jumped on top of him."

The goose originally was spotted trapped in the ice with a mate several weeks ago in Winthrop. While one goose was rescued, the other remained stuck.

A stretch of warmer weather thawed the ice out and sent the remaining goose downstream to Brasher Falls, near Erin's Isle Restaurant.

Numerous attempts had been made to rescue the goose. At one point, several individuals had ventured onto the ice to retrieve it. State troopers saw them and stopped them.

The women caught the goose in an area of deep snow.

"He was floundering around," Ms. Hilbig said. "It was hard for him to move. It was easier to catch."

Ms. Hartford said the goose was wrapped in a blanket soon after it was rescued. One of the goose's legs was ripped off when it tried to break free of the ice. The bird is being taken to a pond off Route 11 to be reunited with its mate.

After the goose was caught, Ms. Hilbig said she and Ms. Hartford looked at each other and could not believe what they had just done.

"A lot of people are happy tonight, especially the goose," she said Friday.
