BREAKING NEWS: Marijuana Arrests For Year 2008: 847,864
Mon, 14 Sep 2009 17:33:16 By: Paul Armentano, NORML Deputy Director

From Washington, DC: Police arrested 847,864 persons for marijuana violations in 2008, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s annual Uniform Crime Report, released today. The total marks a three percent decrease in marijuana arrests from 2007, when law enforcement arrested a record 872,721 Americans for cannabis-related violations.

Marijuana arrests now comprised one-half (49.8 percent) of all drug arrests reported in the United States.

Of those charged with marijuana violations, approximately 89 percent, 754,224 Americans were charged with possession only. The remaining 93,640 individuals were charged with “sale/manufacture,” a category that includes all cultivation offenses, even those where the marijuana was being grown for personal or medical use.

Marijuana arrests were highest in the Midwest and southern regions of the United States, and lowest in the west.

The 2008 marijuana arrest total is the second highest annual total ever reported.

Commenting on the 2008 figures, NORML Director Allen St. Pierre said:“Federal statistics released just last week indicate that larger percentages of Americans are using cannabis at the same time that police are arresting a near-record number of Americans for pot-related offenses. Present enforcement policies are costing American taxpayers tens of billions of dollars, ruining the lives of hundreds of thousands of Americans, and having no impact on marijuana availability or marijuana use in this country. It is time to end this failed policy and replace prohibition with a policy of marijuana regulation, taxation, and education.”

NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano added,“According to a just-released Rasmussen poll, a majority of American adults believe, correctly, that marijuana is less harmful than booze. The public has it right; the law has it wrong.”

I didn't read it word for word , too long ! But I think I got the gist of it . You are a pro legalize mj guy . I used to be myself when I indulged a little . Of course that was 15 years ago . I used to pride myself when I was in my early twenties when I went out with my drinking buddies who didn't smoke . They would be trashed and I would be in "not to bad shape " . Is it more harmful than alcohol , maybe yes maybe no . I don't think we know yet the full ramifications of pot on the body yet . I have two main concerns about legalizing it . It is a drug , any way you cut the mustard , it is at least a hundred times stronger now than when I smoked a little mexican when I was a teen that hardly got you high . Today's product are strong , just like any pot smoker likes . Acutally I liked the stuff that only gave you a little buzz not wipe you out like most of stuff out there today . The last statement in your letter say LESS HARMFUL than alcohol . Is that good ? It's still bad if it is harmful . I know you will love this one , but what about a gateway to other drugs ? Every pot smoker I have ever known would laugh at this , but in the same breath every pot smoker I have ever know as tried other stronger drugs . Do I want to legalize pot , full access it to the kids , hell no ~! Alcohol is a serious problem in the north country especially . Get a handle on that one . Smoke your weed at home and don't drive impaired on either one . I say it is coming to mandatory served time first offense . It's just a matter of time and how many innocent people get killed until then . So to sum it up driving on anything that impairs you is wrong as hell . I don't think smoking pot is a very good thing on the family life either ,kids ? There is enough crap that brings our children down ,why complicate it ? The reason you are a pot smoker is probably due to the fact that you were affected by what your parents did . Why not break the chain and give your kids a chance .

I would argue that Beer is the "gateway" drug...

I bet most people drink beer before they smoke pot.

You may be right . Any pleasure drug can destroy a family . I was going to say so what , what's beer lead to vodka , but it can lead to alcoholism which is as ugly as crystal meth or heroin addiction . I am not against having fun , I just don't like it when it is at the expense of your family or some innocent driver . All I can say is do it responsibly whatever your drug of choice may be . Back when I smoked I of course was a pro legalize guy . Now , I don't think it would work but I could be wrong . It may very well become legal some day , hope it works well if it does . I guess if you look a prohibition , it is possible .

Wow...I'm kind of surprised...you seem like such a d*ck in the Juggalo forum rooms. But here you are, making a good goddamn point. I think legalizing marijuana would slow down drug traffic to a great degree. I think if you could buy it in stores, not only would the hype among kids about smoking weed go down, but would be a normal, commonplace thing. Like smoking cigarettes, or drinking. It's just something else you could be doin. I think the opening of clinics to treat addiction, not like rehab, but a bed and kind doctors and psychologist and caseworkers to help you through it, would also be a great idea. I think a YMCA in town would help out the various homeless people, and the drifters. You know, many people with painful diseases and intense depression/mania find relief after smoking. I know plenty of people with stomach pain and nausea that marijuana helps control their problems as well. You know as well as I do how many people in this town are afraid and have lost confidence in the doctors in this area. Most people don't even have insurance, although medicaid is only a signed paper away. There are many people in this town who sit at home and don't go anywhere and live off of their check and roommates because they are far too depressed and have lost hope and can't DO anything. Literally, CAN'T. I know I can barely get out of bed some days. Marijuana can help with these symptoms. You may still need medication, of course, for your physical as well as mental/emotional issues, but it is a quick fix for relief for many people. With regulated use, recreational smoking can be an enjoyable thing. They're just flowers, you know. Just like Hops is just a vine. Did you know that one of the doctors who founded the John Hopkins Hospital was a cocaine addict? Completely by accident, I assure you. He got some cocaine liquid on his arm, and felt that area go numb. So he applied his knowledge of intravenous medication and tried it on himself. He felt instant euphoria. After some time spent in a volunteer-based clinic, he broke it's hold over him and went on to become one of the best surgeons of our time, he was one of the men at the forefront of the medical revolution for many many years. I'm not saying everyone should just do coke, it's a dangerous and tainted thing...but a plant? Just a plant? Don't we also smoke tobacco? Did you also know that there are over 4 thousand KNOWN chemicals in ONE cigarette? It's insane. All this hooplah over a plant who's side effects are nothing more than hungry, happy, and sleepy. And slight memory loss.*shrug* That happens to everyone eventually tho! ;D

I agree with legalizing Marijuana only for those who need it for a medical reason. There has to be some kind of control with drugs other wise we will see so many patients in the hospital for overdosing because they have the rights to do as much as they want. Then there will be another problem that tax payers will complain about because some of the patient wont have medical insurance and we as tax payers would have to pay for their mistake of over dosing. So I really don't know which way to go because I see both sides.

How did you know my name was Dick ? I thought all that info. was kept private . So what you are saying is the Ymca is going to be pushing drugs ? Forget the doctors and just smoke pot ? Give me a break ! Just flowers - poison mushrooms are just plants (I think) but they can kill you . As for the who coke thing , you sound like it's ok in some situations - Nada ! Tobacco , as bad as it is , it is not a hallucinogenic . What's a little memory loss ??? Stupid . Dying happens to everyone to , but I don't see many pushing that issue . I know responding to this is a lost cause , but I got rained out so what the heck . This is why I originally said "Is it the gateway to harder drugs ?" . All the druggies laugh at this then tell tales of the one that really f**** them up . The stronger the better right ? That is why it won't work my dear .

Well, Dick, if you'd pull ur head out of ur ass, you might be able to understand that there is addiction, and there's regulated personal use. I'm not advocating the sale of drugs here! I'm only saying that legalizing marijuana would just help. Imagine the jobs generated from Cannabis farms! Watch a neice or nephew of yours, stoners both, enroll in college and take advanced Chemistry, so they can work in the labs and create and discover new strains and uses for it. Textile mills would OVERFLOW with material! Lanyards would once again be made from hemp. There are SO MANY USES for it. It would benefit humanity. Seriously. You know what you know, and that's all fine and dandy...now go look it up, for real, and get the whole story.

I have known plenty of stoners over the years ,smoked it some myself while in h.s. and college .
Then I grew up . Still to an occasional hit or two. Then I got married and had kids .That's when it stopped completely . I just don't think it is in any way right to influence your kids with it . Life is tough enough . When I smoked , of course I was for legalizing it , as anybody who drinks thinks the limit is to low for dui . Obviously you smoke the stuff and have made some references to cocaine and found how it was discovered fascinating . I would say if you have kids you are pretty lenient with them about it. Do you knowingly let your kids smoke it . What else are you on ? your kids ? I did all that research years ago and I didn't fall for it . Hey you believe what you believe . Let me ask you this , do you think you reached your full potential by being a stoner ? your kids ? We all fall into things we wish we didn't . The difference between you and me is I learned from my mistakes and you didn't , and probably about a 10 IQ points . The brain cells remember ! You should have listened to that commercial about "this is your brain on drugs " or "just say no" .
And just for the record , my head is out of my arse , filthy language you have my dear ! That's another thing about druggies , they have a vocabulary of about ten words and they are all cuss words . That's all I have to say about that . Think positive thoughts ,life is like a box of chocolates ya know .

So why are you being such a soft-guy now? You're such a hypocrite, and I only wish you could actually get to know a Juggalo or Two just to actually know them instead of slamming them. If you're really a compassionate person then you will understand where I'm comming from. So yes, I am a Juggalo; I work a full-time job making $9.00 an hour- straight out of high school. As for the I.Q. comment, I have an I.Q. of 127. I have a kid that I love dearly and I want the best for him. He is too young to comprehend the existance of drugs, let alone be influenced by it! When he is old enough, however, I will make sure he understands the pros and cons of drug use. Experimentation is all apart of growing up... for better or for worse. Our mistakes are what define our character. So do these views and ideals make me a bad person? I've also learned from my mistakes and try to correct them. I'm all about Karma, does that make me the bad guy? All the Juggalo's want is to be left alone but these immature kids (the bosses) are jumping kids that are 15(our "little homie") and robbing them. Yet, when we try to correct that, the story is fliped and, automatically, people want to make us out to be the bad guys. "Judge not, lest Ye be judged!", "Let he who is free of Sin, cast the first stone". Lastly, "look at the echo side"!

You weren't....drinking, or something, while you typed that out, did you? Whew. I almost couldn't understand you. It's a confusing post. There is no point in showing your kids what marijuana is. End that right there. Your accusations are unfounded. You don't even know if I have kids, man. I'm not 'on' anything, btw. I barely drink as it is. I don't beleive anyone should be driving at all while drinking. It's obviously far too dangerous! I live locally, so I just walk. I wish there was a way to make everyone else do the same. But drinking is legal, and people have to make their own choices in regards to. There is a strong argument to make drinking illegal as well...but that's not going to happen.*shrug* I think some things are backwards, some things are dead on. I think I might've been too young to remember those commercials....but I know what ones you're talking about. Smokin' a joint, and frying an egg. Totally not even close to the same thing. And yeah, it's true, i have a dirty mouth, and a utterly filthy mind. But I'm a good person. I do what I can for who I can, I work hard at my job, and although sh*tty things keep on happenin' to me, I just keep going. I am human, I make mistakes, I learn. There is new research nowadays, and it's worth a look. Noone's going to think less of you if you think certain things are still good....it's alright man. There is a big, peaceful, stoned world out there that's waiting to welcome you with open arms and a hookah for 6. Pull up a cushion.
