Brainerd diarrhea is a disease named after the town where the first outbreak was reported in 1983 when 122 residents became ill. The disease is characterized by acute onset of diarrhea lasting weeks and sometimes months. The cause of Brainerd diarrhea has not been found although there is a possibility it is caused by a chemical toxin. There is no known curative treatment. Of the 10 reported outbreaks since 1983, nine have been in the United States. All three Minnesota residents who died this year reportedly from salmonella lived in Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. Perhaps they didn't die from eating contaminated peanuts but from toxins in the soil and/or water where they lived. Does anyone have information on contaminated drinking water and/or outbreaks of gastrointestinal illnesses in Brainerd?
