Al B's comments re: the cardinal (often being the last bird of the day to visit the feeder) brought to mind a highlight of my December. Perpetual Hubby and I had been enjoying butternut squash from my Mom's garden; I put the peelings and pulp with seeds outside under a sheltering pine tree (near our bird feeder) for any critter that might show an interest. Sure enough, a bright red male cardinal showed up, right at dusk. He fed on the squash innards until it got nearly too dark to see him, then flew off. Next morning, he was back nice and early to dig in again. Since then, he's brought his Mrs. along. Perpetual Hubby gets a huge charge out of her "lipstick," as he's dubbed her red beak.
