I just wanted to share this with all of you. I've lived in this area for over 10 years and just discovered Louie's Chop House in Shorewood on Route 52, just west of 59. Food is out of this world....a little pricey, but well worth it. More like a "special occasion" place. I had the best shrimp cocktail I have ever had, and the best steak I've had in ages.

Well been there done that. Worst steak ever. If you want a good steak go to either Al's or White Fence Farm.

I'm really sorry you had a bad experience at Louie's. There were four in our party, and ALL had nothing but good to report. By the same token, I've never had a really GOOD meal at Al's. And also, I didn't know that White Fence Farm served steak. Is that really true?

Didn't like chop house either. Service was bad and we had a large table so they automatically added a tip on that WAS NOT deserved. I will never go back. I heard a lot of other people say it wasn't any good either. We travel miles for good restaurants. Magnums downtown Chicago was really good and service was great. Really good steak and lobster and out of this world double baked potatoes. Another bar/restaurant is in Odell called Rentzes. They have really good steaks and great service. I think they are only open on weekends for dining. Reservations are usually needed. The first Saturday of the month prime rib is the speical. Rib eye steaks are my top choice. Odell is South of Dwight, so not real close to Braidwood. But worth the travel.

I too had no idea the White Fence Farm had steak. We love that place and I will have to try it. As for Al's, my wife and I have only been there once, in fact just a few weeks ago. The place was packed so the only table was right by the front doors. They seated us and then every time a patron opened the front door a nice cold blast of air blew across our table. Our food was cold instantly and we with our coats on. I would have asked to be moved to another table but we just wanted to get out of there! The absolute best place for a steak is Bogarts in Tinley Park. Quite a ride from Braidwood but worth the trip.

You should try Hayden's Crossing in Wilmington. I ate there for the 1st time on New Years Eve & the food was very good & priced right. I've only been there once, but, like I said, it was very good. I've also been to Al's in Joliet & did not care for it.

You should try Ray's Ranch House in Essex. I think their food is good...and Macie's, the old Harborside Marina out by the covered bridge. That's not too bad..

There is actually a place past Essex on 17, I think almost to Kankakee called Davidson's West (I think). The place is dated but WOW...you wanna talk about a good steak....they serve this "butter filet" that literally will melt in your mouth. Delish!!

I have not been out there in years but the best place to go for a great rib eye dinner was Club Irwin in Irwin Illinois,. take rt 17 towards Kankakee ( east) and look for a small road sign past Lehigh rd, Irwin is
(South) just across rt. 115. There king cut is huge. But all mouth watering food. With live entertainment, the owner used to play music on an organ at dinner time, its a small place and fills up quickly so get there early.

The tip is not a problem if it is deserved. We have been to enough restaurants to know when service is good or bad. The food was cold, the service was bad and the appetizers were not bad, but they tried taking them away before we were finished with them. I will go elsewhere. And for the other comment...rentzes is different from poor richards, but I also heard that was good too. Hope this helps!

I've been to both Rentz's and Poor Richard's in Odel, Poor Richards has great fish on Fridays for a GREAT price. Rentz's has a good all around menu. I've heard they have great prime rib but I've never had it. As of right now those two places are two of my favorite places around here including Joliet and Kankakee. I love the small town, out of the way places.
Is the Country Mansion in Dwight any good now or is it even open?
