I was thinking about the businesses that have closed since I was a kid growing up around Steele. If you grew up or attended school in Steele or Holland in the 1960's and 70's, you should remember some of these places:
"The Stand" on campus at Steele Caffey's Grocery Dodd's Trucking (on right coming in on north 61) Chevrolet Dealership Movie Theater Ford Dealership (on the corner by Piggly Wiggly) Dixie Pig ???(between Ford and Pigly Wiggly) Philip Kourey's (?) TV Store Keiser Printing Hamra's Clothing Store Pender Jewelry Hollenbeck Drug Store Hudgen's Cleaners West's Grocery Tastee Freeze Oasis out by the Interstate One-Stop Cafe Francis Grocery Chrysler/Dodge Dealership Martin Gas Station (across from Ford Dealership) Pluto's Gas Station Luke's Taxi Service
HOLLAND: "Daisy Queen" on campus at Holland Holland Grocery (previously Jackson's Grocery) Jackson's Hardware Store Howren's Liquor Store Gardner Norrid Gas Station Jim Norrid's Car Repair Holland School (I think closed around 1974) Save-On Gas Station
Please add the many places that I failed to mention.

Guest-It was the "City Pig" west of the Piggly Wiggly and south of Kinningham Ford. I believe Phillip Kourey's store was a Firestone. Gervis Capps had a hardware store about where Pro Health/Dr. Tim's office is. There was Hudgen's Cleaners to the east of it and a liquor store to the east of the cleaners. Across the street was McDaniel's clothing store and Vallie Lee's clothing store. A pool hall on the corner my the railroad track. Albritton's Grocery was about where Jeannie's Beauty Boutique is and later moved down to West Main. There was another drug store, but need help remembering the name. I remember they had glass top ice cream table and chairs with white peacock feathers under the glass.

To remember those GOOD things about Steele you would have to be in your sixties or maybe a little older. But I truly agree, those were the days.
