A warrant was signed today charging 33-year-old Robert Lee Phillips of Enville with felony vandalism (greater than $10,000), according to a news release from Bradford police.

The charge is in connection with a Jan. 26 fire at a vacant home at 432 U.S. Highway 45-S that led to the death of an unidentified person.

The warrant was served on Phillips at the Gibson County Correctional Complex, where he remains jailed on the related charge of reckless burning that was filed Jan. 28, police said. An unrelated, pre-existing probation revocation issued out of McNairy County also remains pending.

Investigators said they waited to file the vandalism charged until after they contacted the property owner to verify he was not acquainted with Phillips and to verify Phillips entered the property without the owner's knowledge or consent. The property owner is a man who resides in Martin.

A status hearing in the case is now set for March 19 in Gibson County General Sessions Court in Trenton.

Formal identification of the person who died is still pending, waiting on DNA analysis, and likely will take some time. Investigators believe Phillips and a companion unlawfully entered the house. The two were believed to be transient and in search of shelter.

Phillips is accused of building a fire in the bathtub, which grew out of control.

Phillips made it out of the house, while his companion did not, police have said.

The investigation remains open and other charges may still be filed, police said.

Ehhh... what? He burned down someone else's property with a fire someone died in. What world do you live in where those don't involve SERIOUS crimes?? Do you REALLY need someone to explain this to you?? How about this... imagine someone breaks into your house, burns it down, and one of your loved ones dies in the fire. I guess you would tell the police and DA not to file any "bull crap" charges!!

They did not break in the house. It had been open and no on living there for 3 years. Lot of people come and go from there. The house had been condemned and should have already been taken down. She started the fire in a bath tub to stay warm. How is that his fault? Why not charge the house owner for not keeping people out of the house. After all if the house had been boarded up or taken down that girl would have still been alive! Maybe while the Bradford Police is drumbing up charges they should charge the person who owned the house for leaving it open?! It makes as much sence as the trumped up charges on the man that got burned trying to save the girl!

That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard... lol
I'm now assuming your trolling because no reasonable person could actually believe any of that. The police are doing exactly what they're supposed to do and the state arson investigator and district attorney are all in agreement. Actually the 2 charges seem a little light to me... imho

I do not think you are getting the right information about who is in agreement.

Your call number fits you if you think for one minute he tried to save that poor girl. I'm surprised that they not adding man slaughter to his charges. He was walking away from the town. To get help really! There is a house across the road. I say again walking away!

Yup. And use that great defense of blaming the victims. I'm sure a jury made up of more soulless people like the appropriately named "Crazy" would just LOVE it.
