OMG its CRAZY the way Cities are going to the dogs what is with black America. I cant believe the state of this country, I mean we live in a black community and its a damn ahem the way they live. Section 8 housing has ruin this country and black Americans have done their part as well. I know not all blacks are this or that but damn look at yourselves people. . . look at your cities your kids not graduating 70% of children born are out of wedlock. Aids is running rapid through your communities violence, drugs, guns, graffiti everywhere in your neighborhoods its horrible this isn't America anymore. . . . damn im pissed.

I'm 24 years old and I was born and raised in Memphis. Stayed through college and everything. I've watched both neighborhoods I grew up in turn into never-ending crime scenes. I've moved and I never intend to go back. The only safe places are reserved for old money in the center of town, the "new money" upper middle class, and the people who live outside city limits and spend two hours in their car everyday for the sake of a commute.

For those of us regular middle class people, our only option is to buy a home and hope the neighborhood doesn't turn before we get a decent bit of equity out of the place. We're not supposed to say we don't want to live in a "black neighborhood", because it's not nice. Well, experience has taught me that it's no picnic either. I want to live somewhere within my means, but I also want it to be safe, quiet, and well-kept.

I've found this now, in a predominantly white neighborhood. I finally feel free, which is strange, considering the fact that I'm black.

Metro cities around the country are riddled with crime and people/businesses leave. Memphis is no different. Usually, the suburbs are where people flee to feel safe. In the Memphis area, neigbhorhoods once considered safe are not safe now. Property values plummet, schools are not as productive and the overall vibe of a once quiet neighborhood is destroyed. This are few places that people can to and feel safe. I truly believe that whites and blacks can coexcist peacefully if they are family oriented and respectful of each other. There are plenty of black Memphians who are trying hard to raise their families and do the right thing. As far as racial profiling goes, if I see some of the young black men coming my way, I would turn around and go the other way. Why, because of the crimes committed by black young men in this city. Crime simply has to be the polarizing agenda for all Memphians. We cannot go forward until we control the crime.

the problem in Memphis was made worse by real estate companies like Crye Leike who fomented white fear through a very old racist technique called "block-busting" ! with the help and sneaky agreement with local banks and mortgage companies ! but most Memphians don't even know what the term means ! and how it's accomplished in a community ! why ? because they're stupid, fearful and racist ! the only people who benefited from the process were companies like Cyre Leike, and banks such as First Tn.

That's what happened to Hickory Hill ! Cyre Leike made a fortune during this period- now they're doing the same thing (why, because Memphians are easily made fearful and stupid) in Cordova- there ARE however some residents of Cordova that aren't falling for the same old fear mongering by unethical, greedy real estate companies !

This is so true. But there are a lot of neighborhoods, I've noticed are locked up like Cuba. Nobody comes or goes. A good example is that area behind Holy Rosary. It's in a nice little pocket, where I think the neighbors are pretty united in that they won't put up with nonsense and potential riffraff are too intimidated to even look to move over there.

The feds, ala HUD had an investigation of Memphis, so did the FDIC during that time.

The feds were all over Memphis bankers and lenders at that time.

Real Estate agents and banks in Memphis worked hand in glove and made millions. It's a matter of record if you bother to request the information, although there was little if any prosecution. memphis participants covered their tracks fairly well.

How do I know ? I WORKED for the bank that was involved.

I totally agree with po's comments above . Blacks have destroyed our country.Beautiful cities like Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, Pittsburgh, and you name it. They have become worthless slums. Our schools are a joke.Drugs, crime, prostitution,murder, rape,etc are running wild in the inner city. And this "section 8" is just making matters worse. Before blacks were confined to "projects" and things were contained. but now blacks are spreading out into our quaint communities and trashing them!!! Now don't get me started on illegal immigration!!. This country and our leaders are a joke!!!! So you would purchase a home in the heart of the un-gentrified inner city and send your children to a school in a majority black neighborhood, without fear for your/their safety?

I don't think it's right to pull up a "for sale" sign when a black family moves next door, but experience has burned a lot of people when it comes to being open, myself included. I don't think anyone here implied that all white people are morally superior while all black people are unruly and dangerous. However, if you've ever owned property and maintained it only to have to sell it for less than its worth, because a wave of black people (as well as crime) moved in on your neighborhood, it stings.

Personally, I've never known of a wave of white people moving into a neighborhood of ethnic minorities and making it less safe. I really would like to hear about a case if such exists. Seriously, I'm, open to it.
