Hollywood CRA faces criticism for failing to turn around downtown

There are 96 comments on the South Florida Sun-Sentinel story from Nov 3, 2007, titled Hollywood CRA faces criticism for failing to turn around downtown. In it, South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that:

The place has never looked better. Perfectly laid brick pavers line downtown Harrison Street, where neat rows of trees and fancy green street lights border shops gleaming from taxpayer-funded face lifts.

This is tragic.

I've been there a number of times, and the 'for rent' signs are growing. This is a sad example that throwing money at a problem is not the solution. I feel sorry for the people in Hollywood who have been forced to pay for this mistake.

I think the article and some of the posts just about say it all. For me the problem is parking. Not enough of it and very aggressive parking enforcement. I would like to know how many overtime parking tickets were issued in one year in the CRA area downtown.
Agreed, noone wants to go somewhere that doesn't want you. Free parking on the weekends would be a good start.

parking sucks-
Hollywood was a walk-around town and
now, a boiling canyon of concrete.

The Arts park is a DUMP and the building on it must have been designed by an idiot. It is an appalling blob of concrete...
...could have just spruced up the old
Park with $100K.

You people truly amaze me. You all are really clueless. Out of the CRA money that has gone to "certain Businesses" and developers, how much went back into Mara's pocket? Has no one noticed it has always been to her or the comissions friends? E>G> tThe Dance Academy (hmmm Mara's grand kids and Cameron's daughter both attend or have attended the school and the city enforcement divisions were pressured to get it open and look the other way?) or how about giving developers money to build on prime property whereas other City's made the developers assist in the monies required to improve the infrastructures Hollywood pays the developer to build and maybe in 20+ years the monies MAY make it back to the City, if anyone will even remember by then. This City has been the "piggy bank" for most of the commission especially Mara and no one I mean No One even cares or looks into it. It is always pushed under the carpet (Thanks to her Do Boy Alan Koslow) So why doesn't anyone look into all the Apartments given to her for a song and a dance that SHE flips into a profit at the citizen's expense?? Cuz the League of City's afraid if 1 City is found dirty the others will be looked at. Well to late We ALL Know Hollywood is CORRUPT so CLEAN IT UP!! Give us PARKING and GIVE US A COMMISSION AND CITY MANAGER who CARES about the City and not their pockets!!!

wow. Bober is the biggest part of the problem, and this rag falls all over itself to support him; its insane. As the biz owner quoted in the article, mayor mara is has fought to grow and fix downtown when it was a pile of junk. I have lived here for 20 years, and the bobos of the world come and go. Mayor mara has stuck it out, and now, when it finally looks great, plenty of parking and a new beautiful park, this paper insults her! South beach, las olas, aventura, Wilton manors, etc all languished until someone took control, and even then it took years. Without mara, beam, and some other leaders, it would still be a drain. I personally thank the mayor for her hard work, despite obvious bias by this reporter! You go girl!

This is one of the best articles written in a very long time. voter should print it out and take it with them when they VOTE OUT the current mayor and commissioners. Downtown was and is a waste of money. Only the pockets of a few were filled. Mara will go to jail - mark my words. Personally I have had it with this stinking town and I am moving after 26 years out of this rotten state.

Once again the city leaders have shown they cannot manage anything. Wasting money and giving to friends of city leaders is what it is all about, particulary with Mara. Vote out all incumbents in the next election.

Taste is just a matter of opinion.

The "park" is an abomination. It is not user friendly or practical. Matter of fact:ugly.

For a community to survive outside of itself, it needs to have and project a personality. Hollywood has neither attribute. It is a very unfriendly community and as history has shown, will not ever come out of its funk.

No matter how much money is thrown at facelifting, Hollywood will never rise above where it is now..

i completely understand the neeeeeeed for hollywood to stop its decay...it was seriously decaying.....however the real problem was the anxiousness to stop the decay.....

The most serious issue is parking. People will not go to a area if they cannot park. shops cannot stay open obviously. That was poor planning......several buildings downtown really needed to be torn down and a large parking garage needed to be made....if that would have or does occure then it will be hugely better....

Butchers, bakers and candlestickmakers... Is what Hollywood Needs..

City Leaders tried to make their vision Happen without letting a "scene" develop on its own..When downtown started moving in 1999-2002 if the powers that be didnt like the crowds the businesses were shut down.

Many of the people who received grants played a con on the city. The word spread throughut the land to just come to Hollywood and ask the CRA for money..The downtown Landlords encouraged their tenants to go begging.

Now the downtown looks like a fake "Hollywood" set, no pun intended, and not a very good oone.

If the CRA would have done its job and cleaned up the adjoining neighborhoods then perhaps the 1000's of people who live within walking distance would use the Downtown. The money spent in the neighborhoods would have drastically changed the economic makeup of downtown.

The CRA failed as the neighborhood's are the oxygen for downtown.

And that's just half the story. So far, the final totals are...

OVERALL DEVELOPER TOTAL $84,925.00
PERCENTAGE OF CONTRIBUTIONS FROM DEVELOPER INTERESTS 53%
OVERALL OUT OF HOLLYWOOD TOTAL $107,524.57
OVERALL TOTAL $161,276.00
PERCENTAGE OF CONTRIBUTIONS FROM OUTSIDE HOLLYWOOD 67%

If 53% of her campaign money comes from Alan Koslow, I mean developers, and 67% comes from people not living in Hollywood, what percentage of her decisions are going to be made for the people of Hollywood? Geez...I wonder...
