The United Way is a FUNNELING AGENCY. Just give to the charity directly and CUT OUT the middle man who takes a cut so they can pay their CEO'S 250K per year and they get a car. The Broward County United Way is THE WORST EVER. Their new CEO is making 225K, Company Car, & they are STILL PAYING THE INTERIM CEO his salary of 200K per year so he can finish out his "interim" service.

A JOKE....FLEECING OF DONOR MONEY!

I tried to be a volunteer mentor at BBBS of PBC. I went through the interview, background check and fingerprinting, and training. Then I waited. And waited. I called again and again and was told there was nobody to match me with. This went on for TWO YEARS. Meanwhile, the only contact I got from BBBS was appeals for money once a month or so. They wanted my money, but couldn't be bothered to match me with a child I could mentor. I am a professional private tutor, married, with a spotless personal history...there was absolutely no reason for them to ignore my attempts to volunteer.

What is BBBS taking in money for if "there is nobody to mentor"?

How much should a CEO get paid?

Just because it's a charity, doesn't mean it's not run like a business.

You think a bunch a 16 yr old girls are going to run a milti million dollar charity on the weekends or after school?

250K is alot, but it has to be run like a business. That's what CEO's get paid, dude.

I'm glad to see this funding cut. BBBS is one of the few charitable organizations that continues to blatantly discriminate against gay people. In essence; you can't volunteer with them if you are gay.
As such; they perpetuate the ignorant myth that 'most' gay persons are either pedophiles at worst, or not fit to be role models.
Knowing this long-standing policy, I've never even attempted to sign up with them, and that's a shame. I am a successful gay man who is childless, and has plenty of time (and $) to spend with a needy child.
The United Way's continued patronage of this group is the chief reason that I stopped donating to them over 30 yrs ago, much to my employer's dismay. Instead, I donate to organizations that do not embrace discrimination nor tolerate it via funding - whether it's 'decreased' or not.

The United Way is a joke!! I wouldn't give those fools a dime. If you really care for a charity, donate directly to them, and stop funding this useless organization. They take 40% of your donations, to pay for overpaid under-worked employees.

I guess they need that extra money for their ProHomo organizations.

The Broward County Boys and Girls Club has over 24 fundraisers a year, averaging two per month. They raise millions of dollars. Take a page from their notebook and do the same. It is one of if not the most successful non-profit organizations in Broward, let alone the country.

I am sorry to hear that your local chapter would not allow you to be a BB due to your sexuality. But the truth is not every chapter runs that way. My son has a BB and when we were interviewed, we were both asked if it would be to with us to have a Gay BB. They do not discrimate at all. BTW, I am a lesbian mom.

Did you finally give up? If so, I would ask you to return and try again. I signed my son up for a BB 3 years ago and it wasnt until a couple of months ago that my son was matched. Saddening that it had to take so long...but we are thrilled with the BB.

I understand that but you give money to the united way, they take 40% so their CEO can rake in the big bucks and whatever is left they funnel to local non for profits. Seriously, its stupid, donate directly to the charity so your money has a chance to do some good.

I heard the old CEO Doug Webber for the United Way of Broward County ran into the ground the United Way in Tampa...He squandered money, showed up to work DRUNK and pretty much collected a pay check on peoples donations & they STILL HIRED him to work in Fort Lauderdale, then they realized what a mistake he was and got rid of him!

Funny, it's the United Way's demands that people do things their way (ie - the Boy Scouts) or lose funding is the reason I stopped giving to them.

Interesting that in the name of diversity, we're actually eliminating diversity by forcing everyone to belive, participate, accept and behave exactly the same.

The United Way was created with the intention that all other programs would go away. That never happened and now they keep changing how they give money away and who they give it to. It is their program and they can do that. My solution several years ago was to stop giving them any money. I simply give to the cherity of MY choice. Now with the price of gas and food, cherity starts at home.

I'm surprised people still give money to the United Way. Guess that's why so many locals are prone to getting fleeced by the bunko boys.

The United Way must be up to their old tricks of million dollar buildings, and generous benefits for the higher ups. Gotta cut the budget somewhere, better in the trenches than in the offices!

If you think the $200K is high for the new incoming Pesident of Broward County, check out the HEFTY $18,000 PER MONTH the current Pres is making for just part-time work! United Way must be way wealthy - wealthier than the people who donate their hard earned dollars each week!
