Revised letter to editor for publication:

Please consider this letter a response to a letter written by Ms. Adrianne Blank and Mr. Charles Haddad regarding the Main Street Parking Issue.
The fact that Building A Better Boyertown finally received funds totaling almost a million dollars is irrelevant to parking upon the Main Street of Boyertown. Considering our start of 2002 with Building A Better Boyertown, it is certainly high time to receive something for our efforts similar to other communities enlisted in the program.
BBB, via Ms. Blank and Mr. Haddad, initially proposed a parking plan that would have disadvantaged elderly and handicapped people; and, it was rejected. They finally agreed to a two-headed meter per meter post for dual parking spaces.
After more money arrived for the Main Street Project, Ms. Blank and Mr. Haddad returned to Council Chambers proposing a two-hour parking plan without meters.
A two-hour parking plan without meters provides greater opportunity for abuse; and, it would require additional personnel by the Borough of Boyertown to monitor the parking by chalking tires and constant checking. That would be necessary to catch the violators to collect the fines.
Loss of parking meter revenue and the employment of parking personnel for enforcement would require a sizable tax increase for Boyertown Borough Residents. Do you want to pay more taxes for this purpose?
In their letter, Ms. Blank and Mr. Haddad state,“It is also significant that the $930,000 raised by BBB through grants is not local tax dollars…...” Really! Has government found another source for funds aside from taxpayers? And the good folks of Boyertown pay taxes! Stop promoting the idea that we are always spending someone else’s money!
I think it Victorian to suggest that if Ms. Blank and Mr. Haddad want to promote their proposal, they could easily accomplish it by proposing that Boyertown Borough Council impose a local “business tax” to make their proposal a reality without imposing upon already tax-burdened homeowners.
The good residents of the Borough of Boyertown have already contributed local tax dollars each year toward the support of Building A Better Boyertown and The Main Street Program, so please do not burden us with a tax increase resulting from your plan for parking.
