Hi, I was thinking of moving my family to Pottstown, right now we are looking at a place on south street, it seems like it would be an ok area, but I've been reading good and bad things about the area along the lines of crime, our main concern is, is that part of pottstown ok? Also the school system we have a 1st grader, what are the elementary schools like there?

We moved to Pottstown in July of 05. We live in town and while people say one of the streets I live by is bad we've never really experienced probs. There was a kid who shot himself in the leg as he walked down the street near me. We moved from Bucks County due to the high cost of living there. We bought a twin here for alot less.
Our oldest is the only one in school and he started in middle school at Pottstown. I loved the staff there! Open line of communication with more than one of his teachers. Same so far in high school.
I dont know much about South St but what I've seen it seems to be a nicer area. Sorry I couldnt be more help but if you have questions I'll try to answer. Just stumbled on this site.

my fiance and i are moving to the area soon and need help finding housing. we would love to rent a house for a little while to be sure we like the area before we think about buying. unfortunately, the web is not a good place to find anything but apartment complexes. if anyone gets the pottstown mercury newspaper, could you take the time to review the 'houses for rent' sect and post a couple of them on this website for us. we are looking for something small (2 BR, 1-1 1/2 baths), etc. something around 7-850 per month. any help would surely be appreciated. thanks for taking the time. thought this would be worth a try.

I dont have a hard copy of the mercury and what I see online doesnt give me many details. I think your best bet would be to call a realtor and see if they have any rentals. If they dont they may be able to steer you in the right direction. Heres a name I see alot.(Terry Musser you'll have to look up the number on the internet since I cant post it here). I dont personally know this agent just happened to find the number.
I think you should be able to find something in that neighborhood but certain areas are better than others. If you have questions about a certain area post and I'll see if I know anything about it.
Good luck on your move. That's quite a distance.

I would stay away from Pottstown borough... It is a cancer cluster town and although the school district is educationally competitive, the drugs, bad behavior, teen pregnancy are not the types of things I would want my children to see. Try Upper Pottsgrove (Stowe), Sanatoga, Lower Pottsgrove, Royersford, Spring City. Also Mary Southern is a wonderful real estate agent! She has helped my family many times!

Two of my children are in top ranked, competitive colleges now and both graduated from Pottstown. They both tested out of all freshmen English and math. I have a child in the high school now and he just received a scholarship to a Division One school for sports and academics. I also have a middle school child. The open lines of communication with teachers and the academic curriculum has been great. My only complaint has been on the PSSA focus instead of academics, but that's every where not just Pottstown.

My kids didn't see much drug use in school at all. Heroin and cocaine were big problems at surrounding schools but not Pottstown.

Just like any town there are good and bad neighborhoods. STay out of the center of town and you should be fine.

I know this is an old post and probably will do no good to the person that originally started this thread, but I thought it may help other people that may make decisions off of reading this.

I have lived in the Pottstown Area for almost all of my life. I grew up in Lower Pottsgrove and now live in Upper Pottsgrove. Pottstown Borough is not like living in the worst part of Philadelphia or anything, but it does have it's bad neighborhoods. If you do not have any children, then just make sure you stay away from the center of town and you should be perfectly fine. This obviously does not hold 100% true, but as a general rule, the further you are from the Washington St./High St. intersection the better the area gets. Pottstown School District is fine, but there ARE better ones to send your kids to. My recommendation for people with kids is to stay out of Pottstown borough altogether and live in one of the surrounding boroughs. Really any of them will be perfectly fine with low crime and better schools.

You have to watch posts from people that have never lived there as they do not know fully what they are talking about. A lot of people in surrounding communities seem to have some sort of issue with Pottstown for some unknown reason or they are just looking up crime statistics and unfairly applying them to the entire area.

I've lived there for 36 out of 37 years of my life and have only been the victim of identity theft. And that happened to me in Willow Grove in the one year that I didn't live in the Pottstown area.

Hope this helps.

pottstown is NO place to raise you r kids, and the truth is that it is only getting worse. The school district is NOT good at all, but it does make kids with only 1/2 a brain to look like genius! I would consider douglasville, and west of pottstown a consideration. The Oley Valley is beautiful and has easy access to Rt. 422.

franklin elementary is horrible. there is no communication from the staff to the parents. the principal is a racist. she's mean to the kids for no reason. my son was there this past yr and i asked every quarter for a conference and wasnt given one. not even over the phone. i had no idea what his classroom even looked like. the staff there needs supervision.

Studies have confirmed a high rate of cancer in the neighborhoods surrounding the closed Pottstown Landfill. Whatever you do, don't live anywhere near this old dumpsite brimming with carcinogenic chemicals.

We're out of this underacheiving area pronto. The HS administration showed what they think of the students when they hired a vice principal from a juvy detention center. This place has nothing else to offer my oldest son academically as well as athletically. Strictly favoriitism here. How the f do you not play the talent when it comes to sports? You have to be from the area to get the play, even if your 6'5 at 15 and run a 4.3 40, and pitch a ball that the comp can't catch up with. This place and it's administration is a joke. Riddens.

My husband and I have been viewing homes in the Pottstown area. We have one school aged child and two little ones at home. I don't know much about the school district or too much about the crime rate. We are looking for something cozy, but not too expensive.(around $1,100). Any advise about the schools or crime rates??

Pottstown has one of the highest per capita crime rates in the country. Google 'Pottstown pa crime rates' and lots of websites come up that will back that up. Pottstown has a facebook page called 'crime in pottstown' that was started by concerned citizens. Borough council itself is inneffective, giving breaks to slumlords (seriously, the town is full of decrepit or blighted rentals, sheriffs sales, etc) and citing homeowners, the only people who can or will pay, over and over for minor things. The mayor recently referred to concerned cotizens who came out to speak to council 'fearmongerers'. They speak of the large number of shootings, gang activity, drug dealers (heroin is pretty prevalent in pottstown), prostitutes, car break ins, home invasions. No wonder they are afraid. Its in a local newspaper article in the mercury. Taxes are maxed out, home values are plummeting, sheriff sales and abandoned homes are pretty high in number. There is a large number of sex offenders in town.
Pottstowns schools are in the lowest 15th percentile nationwide and in state. Contact the pa department of education for test scores and ratings or Google 'Pottstown pa school rating' for websites.. They have no bussing in district unless you pay, so your children will walk in this high crime town. And none of the schools have school zone signs or speed limits. They just cut their special end department by 11 staff. Gave admins raises though.
If you bring concerns to school admins or borough management/council you have a high chance of being ignored or worse targeted.
Whereas there are many good people, rich and poor, black/white/brown/yellow/rainb ow, there are also a good number of not so good people and people from outside attracted by the drug trade and gangs.
The Schuylkill floods fairly often. And damages homes.
Its been on the decline for over a decade. Some people are trying to change it, but even some of those folks trying are close in conference with those selling it out. It is going to take a lot of hard work to clean it up.
I was a native for about 6 years. Two domestic violence crimes, a single mom who was murdered, and another woman who was stabbed in the throat and chest repeatedly in broad daylight during the summer across from a park with kids in it, happened within a block of us and I and my kids were done. Our neighborhood was a quiet one too.
