Full story: The Winchester Star

My wife and I were born and raised in the Lehigh Valley of Pennsylvania, lived in the Delaware Valley, and being longtime Shenandoah Valley vacationers, moved to Winchester upon retirement.

Hello! I am from Long Island, New York and am re-locating my family to the Winchester area for a slower pace of life. I am a chiropractor who will be opening an office in downtown Winchester. Would you be able to provide any suggestions as to how you met people when you moved? Thank you!!

Yeah stay in NY. As a NY who moved to winchester some 20 yrs ago, I found it to be difficult to be accepted by people from the area. I left, however i still have family there. There feelings is why are they there. Some things do not make sense. Good food, bakeries do not exist in Winchester or the area. You must travel to the DC area for many things. The slower life is correct if it gets any slower they would be going backwards.

And that, Lady, is exactly what makes it appealing! You have to remember, you must adopt to them, they don't adopt to you! They didn't move to you, you moved to them. Until you prove to them, that you want to be one of them, they will hold you at a distance. If you want to live at a higher rate of speed, then slap leather and head North, get out of town, and don't look back. I'm sure they will even help assist you.
The people are great, it's just that you must want to be on their level, don't hold yourself above them.......simply put........be a friend!

As a Northerner, it will be a little difficult for you to understand, not only Southern attitudes, but their 'small town' way of living. Sometimes, they just plain 'mistrust' people from NY. Call it whatever you wish, but that's just the way it is.
When you move there, be prepared to adapt to them, not them to you.....again, that's just the way it is.
You will either sink or swim, as the old saying goes, and if you can't, then, you better be ready to agitate the gravel, and don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. It may seem harsh, I know, but once more, that's just the way it is. If you leave, they won't care, and they will gladly help you out that door, and on your way. They are good people, and it's you, that may have to change and adapt to their way of life, for after all, it is you that has come to town, so you can take them as they are, live with them, or........you can 'fight' them, and in the end, find you can't hack it.
Winchester is rather small townish, and that's the way most of those that live there, enjoy it. Don't expect them to change for you, for it's you, that may have to change. You could find it difficult in the beginning, but just be yourself, be friendly, accept them for who they are, strive to remember that is you, who is the stranger, and if they accept you, there are absolutely no finer people anywhere. If you can't, then..........you may as well go somewhere else.........that's just the way it goes.

And THAT, is exactly why they go to live there! There are far too many who can't wait to get from point A to point B, and can't do it fast enough. WHY?? Life goes by too fast now, why rush it! If you like the fast life, and the fast lane, they by all means, take it out there as quickly as you can, and leave it to those who want to slow it down, or perhaps, even stop it, if one could ever be so lucky! Otherwise, just shut up and get out! Life was meant to be enjoyed, not to have someone riding your butt all the way, and wanting you to move over so that they can get to where they want about all of 30 seconds to a minute ahead of you. Too bad, if you don't make it, kill yourself, and get it over with. Go ahead and get back to new york, where the yankees want to trample over everybody and get what?
Even they don't know! Yes, Winchester would be a much better place if all those who want to speed through life, would do just that, and take the first fast lane they can find, out of town! I love it slow, and the slower the better, again, if you can't handle it, get your butt out!

Yep, and I like that even more! If I didn't like the West so much, I'd be living there.

Front Royal is one screwed up place to live. Stay where you are. You are better off. Unfortunately, my husband wanted to live here instead of Maryland and now I'm stuck. UG!

My advice: avoid Winchester altogether! The best use of this town would be for a large nuclear test. Beware of crooks, dead beats, and the Palin mentality. It IS hell on Earth.

Why don't you move to Chicago? I'm sure you'd feel welcome there, after all, you'd be *new blood* for the street criminals, drug dealers, and hookers there. They'd love you I'm sure, just tell 'em that you voted for Obama, they'll leave you alone! Really... they will...

Bloodrayne is CRAZY. The people of new York had hardly anything to say and you snapped and lost your mind. I do business with people from new York and they are very sweet. Did you know they have the country in new York too and they don't all think that they are high and mighty. You are crazy. Just cause you are backward don't try to intimidate the people that want to move here Winchester has plenty of room for everybody. Crazy person go take some pills. Oh you probably already are. You give Kentucky a bad name. Phsyco

Yes you have to adopt to them try adapt. Idiot. Meaning you have to act like a retard in order for them to accept you and even then they won't accept you cause they make fun of people consistantly. So if you act like a retard like them they won't accept you either way the people are a holes. Guardnteed. Smoke weed so you can't move off the couch pop and snort pills coke onthe side and drunk as a skunk. Make sure you don't brush your hair or else they will say you are from new York. If you have a t shirt without stains on it they wonder why you are All dressed up. You should welcome in outsiders. It's nice to be nice. Karmas a
B tch. I'm sure you lost your two front teeth are pregnant And live in a trailor with no heat while your man is out some hot shot new York women and your sitting Around talking to yourself cause you can't call anyone the phone was shut down cause you used the money to buy pills and snort em. Your a low life. Not everyone is like that HO. Don't listen to her. She is just mad cause she can't buy a brush for her matted hair. Hahaha joker!

and there you have it. a great case for the inflexability of the winchester culture. I don't think that I could have explained it better... even though this person thinks they are making a case for coming here, its pretty clear that we havent a clue in Winchester.
