halloween is terrible now, trick or treating starts at 5 and ends at 7pm..... 7 PM!!!! when I was a kid we did not even start trick or treating until it was dark out, and we would stay out til 11 pm or later!
.
I was never stabbed, murdered, rapped, shot, hit by a car, kid napped, and neither was anyone I know, we are so overly obsessed with child safety now we are robbing them of awesome life experiences, in this world where the kid who finishes last place and gets a " fun participation" trophy just like the person who finished first place we are raising an entire generation of soft, wussy kids who when they are released out into the world is going to expect everything to be lollipops and rainbows and wonder why they are being eaten alive..
.
but its ok,, now we have a safe alternative, we have trunk or treat! how awesome is this, lets teach kids that its ok to go into a parking lot, walk up to a stranger whos car trunk is open and offering them candy, some how THIS is a safe alternative, really? how long will it be before some kiddie diddler figures this out, and offers some kid a snickers bar with his trunk open, then pushes the kid into the trunk, to me this seems MORE dangerous than trick or treating..
for the love of god people, lighten up, let kids be kids, let kids have fun, let kids go trick or treating after dark on halloween like its supposed to be, halloween is all about being scary and spooky and decorating your house to be scary, nothing is less scary than a fully lit sun shiny house, and nothing is more scary than the direction this world is heading in.

Fed-up, good post.. I totally agree!! I think it extends way beyond Halloween too. This way of thinking has given us the latest generation of panty-waists that are "occupying wall street" & elsewhere. A bunch of adult children whining about having to pay back student loans & crying because they have to start life at the bottom of the totem pole. They should've been taught that you don't always win & sometimes you really have to work at things to get them accomplished. You're not supposed to start at the top making $200k/ year.
I'd like to add to your list by saying I (we) never wore a helmet when riding our bikes & my mother wasn't hovering over me with a bottle of hand sanitizer in case I accidentally touched something. It really is pathetic these days...

I couldn't agree more with what you have said. Trust me I am a protective parent, but not overprotective. I remember going with a group of neighborhood friends/kids and going trick or treating with our parents all watching us to keep an eye on us. I go with my husband and kids, our parents (they enjoy watching the kids), and our neighborhood friends every year and we all watch one another's. It's a shame that we can't even allow them to go past 7 now... By the time we get there its almost time to leave. Porch lights on meant they were participating, off meant go to the next house. Just taking it to ridiculous levels nowadays. Next thing ya know, it'll start at noon and wrap up at 3 and will always take place on a school day...

I would add to that the fireworks debate. Nothing wrong with kids shooting off fireworks at holidays. Who are all these old fogies complaining? Were they never young?

Y'all forget this is a different time in our generation! No longer are kids safe to do the things they once did-hell adults ain't safe anymore either.

I agree that Halloween isn't a whole lot of fun any more and I blame Trunk-or-Treat and other "alternative options" for that, but one reality is that these hours have been in place for years. I don't know if enforcement has stepped up, but I just looked at news articles from 1996 and the hours are exactly the same, specifically saying no trick or treating after dark. The difference is that back then not a soul bothered to follow that.

yeah sorry i dont support the trunk or treat thing either.. i dont want my child believeing its okay to take things out of peoples trunks even if it is at a church. and honestly im terrified to go anywhere in bowling green that involves downtown or unlit streets.... and i have lived here my whole life. It's insane knowing you cant even let your kids go outside by themselves and play with neighborhood kids without you stalking them at your front door.... halloween definately isnt what it used to be.... sometimes i think having a kiddo halloween party for my daughter and her friends would be a better idea than trick or treating...

Well I'm not a big fan of trunk-or-treat either but if you can't teach your kids the difference between getting some candy on Halloween & taking candy from a stranger on the street.. Well, you should probably reevaluate your life and maybe get your kids checked out too.

I'm glad other people feel this way too! It sucks bc people are getting more psycho and dangerous that has caused us to become like this. Everything use to be so much simpler and easy going and now everyone's uptight about every little thing and there's so many rules and regulations. Halloween sucks now

also, what happened with halloween being about horror and gore? when i was a kid, every house was decorated in the most vile, disgusting and horrific scenery as possible. along with bloody and scary costumes.

now it's winnie the pooh and dressing up as fruits and vegetables... wtf!??!?!

r.i.p. halloween.

Im not that old but Im happy Im reading this forum cause i like horror movies and the fact that halloween is the only time of the year were i can dress like an idiot eat candy all night and decorate my house with things that would not pass ESRB. I don't approve of my sister who is going as a fairy princess and me whos going as a follower of satin.

I agree BUT.... If you think trunk or treats are going to teach your kids that it's okay to take candy from a strangers car, what makes you think regular door to door trick or treating isn't the same or worse? Going to a strangers house where they give you candy? I'm all for trick or treating but this argument against trunk or treat doesn't make and sense.

what is wrong with dressing up in something a little different than the norm? zombies, witches, and devils have been done to death. Besides there are some pretty evil fruity people out there...lol
