I watched the WBKO report the other day about the Alvation Fire Dept...."We are actually short $273,6791.01 this year," says Alvaton Fire Chief George Merkle on WBKO ( http://www.wbko.com/home/headlines/Volunteer-... 's%2520a%2520whole%2520new%252 0kind%2520for%2520volunteer%25 20departments.%2520Red%2520fro m%2520budget%2520deficits. &rev=119166&ct=1&x ld=1&xd=1).... how did they get so far in debt in Alvation?!?!? on top of what we are required to pay on our tax bill!!!! they get over $150,000.00 a year and they have a full time paid staff...now that want to close the only Warren County Pool!!! thats not right

When we say we are operating that short, it is because our current funding is $153,000.00 a year (roughly). Of which $5000.00 is received from Warren County, $8000.00 from the State for meeting training requirements etc. the balance from voluntary membership dues. To operate the fire department and maintain all the equipment we own is about $400,000.00. That includes the money set aside to replace trucks every 30 years (a stripped commercial fire truck cost $250,000.00 without any equipment). The protective gear a firefighter wears is about $3000.00, we have 40 firefighters, it has to be replaced every 10 years (NFPA rules, not ours). We operate with in our budget, banking about $5.00 this year after our income. We have no way to replace trucks at $5 a year. The budget allows us 3 sets or protective gear a year. No hose if it breaks etc... In order to maintain all the equipment we have (NOT ADD ANYTHING new), it should be $400,000.00 a year. We have 5 trucks that are due replacement within the next 5yrs. Total cost to replace them, about 1.6 million. Had the funding been at $400,000.00 a year, the funds would be there to replace those trucks. Instead, we face taking them out of service, and having ISO rates go up.

I'm retired with a fixed income and the price of gas going up right along with everything else. Why is it everybody always pointing their finger at the home owners they need to get revenue from tourist , Hotels ,State Parks etc. I'd like to know who has there hand in the cookie jar it seems to me thoughs who rent are much better off it cost me a year taxes and insurance 3500.00 if I rented it would be a saving plus no maintence.

This is true! All of it. It's public records. The Judge Executives office can verify this. Although, they continue to cut the budget for the volunteer fire fighters. Suppose all of the persons who VOLUNTEER their time were paid employees? Thankfully they volunteer. Compare the number of County Volunteers and the number of calls they get to the City Paid Fire Fighters and the number of calls they get..........THANK YOU VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY!

Alvaton has spent tons of money over the years. Everyone knows it went to hell after they ran their best cheif off many years ago. Billy Sears could fix their damn spending problems i bet.
