This is the view of a parent. I ate lunch with my child at (3rd grd) school. The food was even worse than I remember. Lunch cost $1.95 for a "sloppy joe" 8oz milk and one side. This would be a far price for a Healthy lunch that contained food quailty of 70% of the cost. This leaves the school with a 30% food cost. A small child should not have to take a lower quality food product to pay for lunch room cost areas. ie labor, food cooking supplies.

U should consider urself lucky that ur child is getting enuff to eat. Some districts have adopted a new lunch policy 500 calorie lunch. A "healthy lunch" in some consists of things they have never eaten before & there is not enuff.

U obviously r clueless how ur body works. Ur body worries abt the necessities of life FIRST; therefore if u have a child that does not have an adequate meal for whatever reason then it makes it more difficultfor them to learn. Y do u think there r gaps in education due to socio-economic status? Bcz the kiddos who come to school hungry or have a very unstable home life r more concernedwith basic needs than reading a BOOK. Sds like u were more concerned with food than "bouks" as a child based on the information you have provided.

You can thank Ms. OBAMA for the wonderful lunches!(Not kidding! This ole bag has made school lunches "healthy" and tastless and meaningless). She has made it so that all children get "healthy"...I just wish she would look in the mirror! The one thing kids should be able to enjoy...LUNCH for goodness sakes! And that old bag (Ms.Ovomit) has to put her old long nose there and change laws on how school children eat!

I was in the lunch like and I saw a lunch lady pouring a pitcher of water into the nacho cheese it was gross and the she did the same with the meat. And the give us those baked chips that come in a bag! So I just got a ham sandwich and will now always start taking my lunch our school has everything artificial and the sausage has to be fake!

I'm really confused... People are on here complaining that your kids eat a healthy lunch at school... Others are complaining that 1.95 is too much for a very fattening lunch.. You chose to get one side because the other choices are fruits and vegetables.... I'm guessing you are obese. Maybe you should switch the the 500 calorie school lunch.

Funny how my post about Michele Obama was deleted and how she is behind all of this. Is doesn't matter how healthy the food is,if it taste so bad that the kids won't eat it then it is not so healthy is it. It is not the governments place to take control of our schools this is not Russia.

Maybe if parents were doing their job the government wouldn't have to step in! No this is not Russia, but if things don't change, our country will no longer be the number 1 country in the world and Russia will over take us. Our children are falling behind other countries academically and it is NOT the fault of our teachers/education system. It is because parents are not doing their part. They want to say 'my child this and my child that', talk, talk, talk. No action. Our children are becoming more obese and more unhealthy everyday and it is affecting the way they learn. Kids are having kids, single parent households are the norm, fast food is what is for dinner most nights, and computers and/or tv is the source of "homework"! Unlss and until parents stop griping and at least open their minds to at least try something different, we are doomed!

Jesus Christ, if people want their kids to eat whatever they believe to be healthy and not "school food," get your lazy ass up 30 minutes earlier and pack them a damn lunch. And if you can't do that, then scratch your ass and get glad that someone else (i.e. all us taxpayers) is giving your kid food, some for absolutely free. I am a parent of two, and if I have a problem with the school, I fix it. Seems all the mothers of my generation, save a few exceptions, are lazy whiners who don't know how to discipline their kids, not to mention can't appropriately feed them. People just love to whine - I say get up off your ass and fix it.

just when I thought I had heard it all...you are actually blaming Michelle Obama for wanting kids to be healthy?! Don't be so sad. When your littleone(s) get home give em all the ooey-gooey,sugary,cheesy,greas y,snacks and foods they want. They will never remember the healthy, well-balanced, nutritious, lunch they had nor will they be traumatized by the those alien vegetables and fruits they were encouraged to try!!!!

Quit being lazy, i do agree with you on some points but the fact is our kids deserve a decent lunch and there is no need in parents having to pack a lunch when our tax dollars have built lunch rooms. My son plays three sports and either practices or plays almost every day so he needs to eat not only quality food but alot of it. What the government and school systems are doing is causing parents to consider more now than ever privat schools for their chilren!

My child goes to McNeil Elementary and their lunches are great! They have a full menu of choices every day and they switch it up every two weeks, the same thing is not on the monthly menu but maybe twice (if even). I have ate lunch with my daughter at school, and they have plenty of healthy choices that also taste good. I dont know what school your child goes to, but lunch choices are made by either the school or the district.

Do you know how many different opinions exist on what is decent? Should they not serve pork, since it offends some religiously? Should they offer vegan options if their parents are raising them that way?

Last year, when my son came home from his first week of school, he had learned the most wonderful saying that applies so much to so many things: YOU GET WHAT YOU GET, AND YOU DON'T THROW A FIT.

Go ahead and pay for private school should it suit your fancy; still seems easier and cheaper just to pack a lunch. But what do I know, I'm just a Mom, after all.

My point is the caloric intake is too low. Believe it or not for some children this is the only meal they get all day! Let me decide what my kids should or shoyldnt b eating. I'm intelligent & financiallystable enough to make surethey r taken care of. I'm concerned abt the ones who only get one meal a day. Y don't u try to survive on 500 calories a day & c where that takes u. And FYI I'm not obese in the least& neither r my kids.
