It's the big Houchens conspiracy! Gas is $9 a gallon in Bowling Green but 50 cents in all neighboring cities!

It's simple. They own the Attorney General. Here's the story. When first elected Jack Conway was serious about investigating gas gouging in Kentucky after the fast price increases after Hurricane Katrina. The old industry quickly realized they had a buddy in the White House in George W. Bush and began sticking it to us. At first gas prices rose typically two or three cents at a time. After learning they could do what they wanted, increases began being five and ten cents at a time.

Well locally, retailers saw that we were still buying gas and were willing, and the upward pricing continued, not only at the supplier levels, but at the local retailing levels too.

I remember SPECIFICALLY an article in the Daily News about the Attorney General prosecuting any stores guilty of price gouging. He even went as far as to say "I don't know what Western Kentucky University going back into session has to do with raising gas prices." He was aiming this directly at Houchens and Minit Mart!!!

Well, this investigation of his most likely was to include Houchens and Minit Mart. He did prosecute Speedway and some "Ma and Pa" markets in the area but did not include these two in his investigation.

Reason why???? This is the SAME TIME that Houchens Industries gave millions to Western Kentucky University to complete the upgrades in the new football stadium addition. They continue to be a vital contributor to WKU.

My theory, they are a vital contributor (ultimately YOUR money) to WKU and through the President, the Board and important alumni, there is a hands-off position for Houchens now. And what Houchens can do, Minit Mart will copy.

To prove my story, I'll tell of two facts. One, Houchens bought out the Browning distributorship and store locations. This includes one store in Russellville, this store gets its gas from the same supplier, themselves, yet always charges 20 to 25 cents less!!! Why??? Because this store is out of the "Houchens Minit Mart price controlled market." There is open competition there and they don't control the market to the point they can set the prices for the town. No one can or will explain why this store, when being supplied at the same prices, is always lower!!!

Second fact, when the new BP station opened up on Nashville road at Dishman Lane, they opened up with prices that matched the other markets based on supplier pricing. Immediately all other stores in Bowling Green lowered their prices to match this store, but soon the prices crept right back up and greed controlled the market. The new BP store followed suit to make more profit and matched these higher prices.

Basically, Houchens has bought out the competition, and has tight ties to WKU and through that own Frankfort. If anyone else denies or doesn't believe these facts, then prove another reason why gas is magically higher here than anywhere else, including Tennessee, which has 3% higher sales tax included in their pricing. The Houchens/Minit Mart market runs from Bowling Green to Morgantown, Glasgow and to the Cave Area. For honest market pricing head South to Franklin, West to Russellville, East to Gamaliel, or into Tennessee, like Portland and Springfield. These markets are always lower, by a significant price...why???

We're being screwed and Frankfort will not investigate!!! I know I've personally reported this pricing in detail to the Attorney General's office, with no avail. I'm sick of it, but what can we do, when the market is controlled by greed and corruption.

That's the dumbest theory I've seen.

The state AG doesn't care how much money Houchens gives to WKU. I don't know why that makes a difference to you.

The AG did cite Minit Mart for its pricing at the same time it cited Speedway and others.

Maybe you should get out more. As of right now gas is the same price or higher in Pikeville, Elkton, Munfordville, Harlan, Bardstown, and Central City among other places.

What difference does it make how much Houchens gives to WKU?

Minit Mart was popped when Speedway and the others were popped.

You need to get out more. As of this posting the gas costs as much as or more in Elkton, Munfordville, Pikeville, Harlan, and Central City among others than it does here.

Do you understand how silly that sounds? Ignoring the ludicrous idea that the state gives Houchens' special treatment because of its contributions to WKU, why would Houchens set things up in such a way as to allow Minit Mart and its other rivals to make more money?

I would encourage you to go to work for any of these guys and see how profitable gas is(n't).

The owner of bp tries to lower his prices.. but then his supplier raised prices of his gas... and then told him.. he must. Set his prices to the minit mart across tje street or he will be over charged again. He has no choice. Nobody is doing anything about this.

BGinsider you are absolutley right. I have reported to Jack Conway's office concerning seeing the price at certain stations in the mornings going to work being at $3.15 then at linch they would be $3.59 then after I get off work at $3.41 this all in the same day. They still say they have are not doing anything wrong that could be that they got new shipments which I personal know they did not get. Conway is as big of crook as Obama Chandler and Beshear so I think it is time to vote that sucker out.
