Don't even think about it if you're wanting to make money! Sadly start out pay in this area is around $9-10/hr for EMT & around $12 for medic. That's the reason most ambulance personnel have 2 to 3 jobs. Pay raises are small when they happen. I know EMT's that have been doing it 10+ years and are making $15/hr. If you want to get paid get a factory job or go back to school and become a nurse.

Wow! That's very sad! They should make as much as police or fire make. A medic should make what a nurse makes. There is not a price on saving human lives.:(

yep. EMS pay sucks and there is no future. The people who does it honestly LOVES their job. Its a shame that the pay is soo low. As a paramedic u can do soo much more than a nurse but yet most RNs get paid double.

He's either lying to you or his gf works part time which means she gets no guaranteed hours, no vacation or sick time, and no benefits like insurance. Part time or per diem employees fill in for full time employees when they take vacation or get sick. They may get 40 hours one week and then no hours for 3 weeks so they usually get a higher pay rate because they aren't regular full time employees. If she's a full time employee, EMT, and making 18 $ an hour then she's been working there at least 15 years. I'd say he's probably misleading you a bit. At most they get a 3% raise which is usually about 25 cents a year. Dispatchers make more but as far as an EMT on an ambulance,$18/hr is highly unlikely.

if she has only been there 2 yrs and is full time EMT, day shift is below $12 per hour. Starting pay is $9.92.

Any healthcare job shouldnt be about the money, anyway. That's why there is such a high burn out rate. If you are truely interested in becoming an EMT you should research it a little more and contact MED CENTER HQ and ask about the EMT class. It is a great set of skills to have. It's not for the simple minded, weak willed though. We work with some really talented people, but they are very demanding and competetive. GOOD LUCK!
